The King has returned!

Sixty-nine years ago on November 3, 1954, Godzilla appeared on the silver screen for the first time in Japan’s Gojira. Since then, over 35 films have been made starring the enormous mutated kaiju, which has resulted in a multi-billion dollar franchise and global fandom over several decades.

Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse is still very much alive and kicking, with a follow-up to Godzilla Vs. Kong on the way, and a Titans-centric TV series also in the works for Apple TV+.

However, the Japanese studio who originally introduced the big fella to the world all those decades ago is still producing movies focusing on the iconic atomic monster, and recently announced that a new theatrical release is scheduled for later this year.

Now, the first teaser trailer and poster for Godzilla: Minus One have been released (via SFFGazette.com), and they give us a first glimpse of the legendary King of the Monsters roaring into battle.

This will be Toho's first Godzilla movie since 2016's Shin Godzilla. Information beyond the title is sparse, but we do know that Takashi Yamazaki - the filmmaker who worked on visual effects for Shin Godzilla - will direct the film.

Specific plot details are also still under wraps, but a (very) brief synopsis tells is that Godzilla: Minus One "sees an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla."

The movie is set to debut in Japan on November 3, 2023 and in theaters in the US nationwide on December 1, 2023.

As an old school Godzilla fan, I’m excited for this. Hope I can get my hands on soon here in America.

@BassMan - The idea of making it a period piece is interesting. I don't think it's been done before in the franchise.

@The1st - yeah I noticed that, same setting as the first film(which wasn’t really a period piece at the time obviously). Love the Toho films

I know the Monsterverse has its fans, but IMO there's just something inherently "Japanese" in Godzilla. Hollywood just can't make them like they do.

Not saying that every Japanese Godzilla movie is perfect or that the Hollywood ones aren't better than some of them (Godzilla's Revenge says hi), but I don't ever see the peak of 1954's original or Shin Godzilla ever getting touched by an American filmmaker.

"I don't ever see the peak of 1954's original or Shin Godzilla ever getting touched by an American filmmaker." - @FinnishDude

Shin Godzilla was on some other shit.

No one in this country is trying to make anything like that. I don't trust them to. They ain't capable of it.

@videovac - Shin Godzilla is the weirdest Godzilla and that's what makes it so great.

@videovac @FinnishDude - Shin Godzilla is great and is the closest in satire and politics to the original Godzilla 54. Of course it has the schlock and b-movie fun but that is the charm of the tokusatsu genre. Story wise USA can't make a good godzilla movie because they caused its creation. Godzilla is a metaphor for nuclear or weapons of mass destruction and the aftermath of it.

There's nothing USA can relate to in that department because they have different ideals and beliefs so they can only make a generic blockbuster film.

@mastakilla39 - Yeah, I can agree with that. The way KOTM treated the Oxygen Destroyer is a great example of that. In the original movie it is kinda a "secondary" stand-in for the nuclear bomb with the Godzilla himself and there's ton of gravitas placed on using it to end the problem, to the point of its creator committing suicide to make sure that it can't be done again or recreated. Meanwhile, in the KOTM, it's used with zero dramatic weight, beyond putting Godzilla out of comission for few minutes, because of course in an American blockbuster movie the American military using weapons can't be portrayed in a morally grey manner.

@FinnishDude - Never believe true godzilla fans who say kotm is a great movie. Its not. Most of us know it was a prety meh godzilla movie at best.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 7/12/2023, 1:39 PM
@Dingus - No offence to fans of that movie, but I'm genuily confused how defensive they get about it and act like it's this near flawless monster movie. Like, the human story is just terrible (and no, Godzilla movies haven't "always had bad human stories") and the fight scenes are genuily hard to watch, with all of them taking place during the night, while there's a storm and they are shot too close to the monsters.
