In the opening sequence of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, John Goodman's character Bill Randa appears to be trying to get things going in a big manner by dodging a gigantic spider kaiju.
But it seems that in order for it to have Randa for lunch, the huge spider will have to battle a giant crab. Watch the three-minute action scene that opens the episode by CLICKING HERE.
Do you believe the enormous spider is the show's interpretation of Kumonga, the iconic Godzilla kaiju that debuted in Son of Godzilla in 1967? In the same way, do you believe the crab to be Ganimes, a legendary Toho kaiju that debuted in Space Amoeba in 1970?
Sadly, no as EW has confirmed that the giant spider is named Mother Longlegs and the giant crab is named Mantleclaw. Still, it's fun to think that the two Monarch kaiju were inspired by their classic predecessors. The Mother Longlegs actually appeared in 2017's Kong: Skull Island.
Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will drop its first two episodes on November 17 before switching to a weekly-release format, with the show's first season concluding on January 12 after a 10-episode run.

Legendary comic book writer Matt Fraction, who is also one of the show's co-executive producers, discussed the show's position in the MonsterVerse canon in an interview with EW.
"The world of Godzilla: King of the Monsters is so profoundly different from the world of Godzilla 2014. Monarch goes from being the Men in Black to the helpers everyone looks for when that siren goes off. It's a cool place to tell a story."
Fraction went on to warn kaiju fans that they shouldn't expect to see giant kaiju battles every week.
"What we set out to do was to make a show set in the MonsterVerse that wasn't focused on the monsters. We felt we couldn't compete with the feature films and we shouldn't try. To build a television series, you have to create a cast of characters, a set of people that you want to follow week to week, and, if we're lucky, multiple seasons. This is a show about people who have woken up and live in a world where monsters are real."

Matt Shakman directs the first two episodes and serves as executive producer alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, and Andrew Colville. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character. Toho licensed the rights to Legendary for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as a natural byproduct of their long-term relationship with the film franchise.
