"King Kong" Prequel In Development

Spirit Pictures have picked up the rights to the book "Kong: King of Skull Island," a prequel to the well-known tale of King Kong. The book was published at the same time Peter Jackson was producing his remake of "King Kong."

The rights to make the movie were brokered with the Merian C. Cooper family, who own the iconic Kong property. Cooper co-directed the original classic released in 1933. And they seem to know the pressure is on to live up to Coop's legacy.

Penned by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland, book focuses on the back story of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films.

The plan is to produce the film using motion-capture technology such as Robert Zemeckis used to make "The Polar Express," "Beowulf" and the upcoming "A Christmas Carol." Spirit's own facility would produce the CG work.

Written by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland near the same time Peter Jackson was producing his remake, the book focuses on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films.

I'll hear more before judging it. There's gotta be people in it...I mean, there were natives in Peter Jackson's remake after all. Now as to if they can make entertaining dialogue...I don't know about all that...

ya all cgi would be the shit they need to make more movies like beowulf imagine how amazin the avengers or pretty much any comic book movie made like that you could do so much with it and king kong is the man er...i mean gorilla lol the movie kinda loses its potency when they get to new york so i think this movie will be badass giant gorillas ripping apart t-rex heads and bat wings man that would be crazy

the first Kong movie was great, but it really doesn't need a sequel/prequel.

The stop motion animation in that clip is actually pretty impressive. However I'm not sure I want to see a prequel, who knows it's early to judge.
I would however like to make one point and that is in regards to the assumption of zero human involvement. I haven't read the book in question, but any exploration of skull island's past must include the ancient civilization which brought the giant apes to the island. So when I think of a kong prequel I see Apokolipto with giant gorillas.

If there is any King Kong movie that needs to be made that would be an updated version of KING KONG VS GOZILLA. Of course I am refering to the original Godzilla from Toho not the one made in US which was Godzilla In Name Only (GINO). The GINO was different origin (mutated iguana instead of a Dinosaur). The GINO was created from scientific Nuclear testing while the original Godzilla was result pending Nuclear warfare. The GINO was easily killed and runaway from tanks and helicopters unlike the original which was fearless and indestructible.

And of course I am not just refering to Jackson's recent incarnation of Kong. The Jackson's or original Kong died ofcourse and is a lot smaller compared Godzilla. Decades have past and a new and larger and stronger Kong emerged.

And who says other explorers couldn't have found the island earlier? Actually with good writers they can come up with a hell of a story. AND Jackson has that kind of crew who can pull it off.

@ CorndogBurglar. A wouldn't mind if its a Donkey Kong movie! As long as they keep it close to the source material unlike the Mario Brothers movie. Now speaking of Mario Brothers now that's a another movie that also needs to remade.

I heard that the CG studio will be using a Keven's mom as the inspiration for Kong .... but i guess they are gonna make some changes like putting on a little less hair and more teeth for Kong ,.... otherwise i hear the comparison is spot on .

Oops ;) dont start none wont be none

Ah The Mom jokes..the Keven Mom jokes at that!

Yeah, Kalabog, im always sayin that, im always saying."What we need is a Mario Bros reboot"..aint i always sayin that guys?

I actually never said that once in case you didn't pick up on the sarcasm.;)

I liked Jackson's Kong, but there were some very dodgy bits. The Brontasaur stampede, the bridge scene when they all fall about 30 feet and just get [frick]ing winded! Anyway, overall great movie.

I think this will make less money than Jackson's failed remake. It was good from a CG Gorilla standpoint, but (and I may be the only one here) I'm getting tired of Hollywood, or any other movie company, constantly rehashing the material we've already seen. Halloween 2 is due out, then Freddy Kruger, then Jason again, then Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the chocolate.....it goes on and on.... SPEND SUM FRICKIN MONEY AND BUY AN ORIGINAL STORY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. There's plenty out there that hasn't been told yet. Disney does it all the time with PIXAR, where's the live action stuff?

y'know, people talk about wanting original stuff, and "why do they keep making remakes." does everyone just not notice all the original movies that come out every single week?? you may not be interested in them all, but come on, remakes are remakes, the original stuff comes out too. inglorious basterds, district 9, those both look like great movies.

i've said this before, but any movie made about any comic book character is NOT an original idea, yet we all love us some comic book movies don't we?? and funny enough, most of us want them to be as spot on with the comics as possible, therefore making them even less original. and again, if there were no such things as remakes and reboots we never would have gotten a batman begins and dark knight...so don't be so quick to hate on the reboots and remakes, good movies do come out of them

I hear ya corndogburglar, I guess my real beef is with the classics that have been seen and done. No more freddy's, no more michaels, no more king kongs. The comicbook stuff is not "original" per se, but it really is..look at the wolverine movie..who would have expected that twist from deadpool? Same thing goes with batman begins...totally new take on an old and familiar story, but I'm getting tired of Hollywood going back to the classics just because we have the cg to make them more flashy, or hit the FX right. Who here wants Star Wars, Episode iv remade? Abrams Star Trek fell off the map when folks realized where he was going, and that's what I'm saying too. "original" can mean never on screen before, too. Anyway, just my two cents....and supermike, keep your mouth shut..yer an A**hole!

i certainly don't want star wars remade, but at the same time, nightmare on elm street is hardly star wars. that whole series was ridiculous from the get go. a remake of it sounds very cool, they could make that a truly scary movie, and with today's effects?? i'm in! the new jason movie, was cool due only in part to the special effects, considering they didn't change anything, that didn't need to be remade because they made it the exact same movie, lol. it just bothers me when people come on here (not that you did this, but there are definately those who do) and act like if you like remakes and reboots, that means your some kind of slave to hollywood, but then they'll turn around and see a batman reboot because its something that fits their tastes...please...
