Original “RoboCop” Screenwriter Says Aronofsky's New Movie Should Be... Interesting!

Original “RoboCop” screenwriter gives his thoughts on Darren Aronofsky's rema...reboo...reima...his new movie!

I'm a huge fan of Darren Aronofsky but when I heard he was going to be helming a new Robocop movie I was as surprised, and unsure as everyone else. I mean surely the guy behind such high minded movies such as "Pi" and "The Fountain" is the wrong man for this type of blood-n-bullets action movie? But of course as well as being an all out action fest, the first "Robocop" is as much a satire on corporate America, so its likely these elements wont be left out of Aronofsky's version. And the director already surprised a lot of people with his brilliant, but fairly straightforward drama "The Wrestler"

Original “RoboCop” screenwriter and co-producer Ed Neumeier had this to say..

“Darren Aronofsky, the director of record last time I checked, is a talented guy and I presume he’ll do something interesting,” Neumier told Moviehole. Neither Neumier nor Paul Verhoeven, the original writer-director duo on the first film, will be involved in the relaunch of “RoboCop.”

So are we in for a surrealist adventure akin to the director’s earliest film work, or a more standard, fan-friendly approach that would spawn out of his surprisingly realistic and heartfelt “The Wrestler”?. As long as there is a huge metal dude and extreme R RATED violence, i doubt too many folks will be complaining either way.

Whatever the new direction taken, Neumeier feels that it will be the studio that ultimately decides the movies fate..

“The biggest problem the new movie may face is MGM’s shaky financial health,” said Neumeier. “Obviously, I hope they do a good job and don’t make a mess of it like they managed to with RoboCop 2 and 3.”

I'd buy that for a dollar!

I miss the days of extreme R Rated movies they always made me feel better after I would witness no holds barred Revenge not pussy ass PG-13 Revenge films.

For Some reason when I was growing up as a child I noticed that most of the films that were coming out were Rated R now that is no longer the trend. Now the trend is making PG-13 film and turning out a really shitty movie.

When will our American public understand that its not what your child watches on TV, Movie Theaters or Video Games its how you raise them that turns them into animals.

I hope Darren Aronofsky can improve upon the Original ROBOCOP movie if he can not accomplish this then he has no business what so ever in taking on this seemingly unnecessary endeavour.

Interesting. I'm about to watch the original RoboCop for the first time in the next days. Aronofsky is great, so, yeah, why not RoboCop...!?

By the way, you mean "Pi", right?! ;-)

lol kyos, i do indeed mean Pi..i was hungry writing the article!

Shaman i thought the 2nd one was ok, but it didnt have the satire or the humor that Verhoven had in the first one so i just found it disappointing.

Aronofsky should be able to do something interesting with it. Tap into the whole robot that still has some of his humanity.
Hellmont, Agree. Hope its a hard R and not a studio pg13. Thats why I liked War Zone..gratuities violence!

The part I didnt like about Robocop 2 was that bitch that tried to reprogram him it would have been much better if they would have written that part out of the movie and shown more detail in Robocop 2 projects and why they all really failed instead of random failures. I loved it when they dismantled Robocop and then they had to put him back together. The way Robo killed Cain was awesome. Its one of my favorite final battles. No mercy or lets be friend, no f#ck that .....you deserve to die and die you will...robo didnt pussy out at all.

I like Robocop as much as the next person. But seriously do we need another Man & Mecha combo for live action. Thats really getting old. But still with todays tech it could be interesting.

Aranofsky was the original director for Batman Begins, sort of. I remember reading that he was really going to follow the Year One storyline.

Should be interesting, his take on a genre film...

Yeah, Bale was involed with the Aranofsky one originally. Still stuck with some of the year one elements.

I like Robo Cop 1 and 2...
Funny thing is that Ive seen Robo Cop 2 at least 15 to 18 times...and Robo Cop 1 maybe 8 times...

I hope they can use Robo Cop 1 and 2 and skip Robo Cop 3 story line...

I am getting tired of reboots...sigh...

I am pretty sure we have enuff writers that can think of a way to keep some of these movies without reboots.

Hulk was good...but the reboot Hulk 2 was spot on and needed.

Friday the 13th....didn't need a reboot...I don't even know who jason vorhees is anymore...dont have the same feel.

Texas Chainsaw Massecre 1 n 2 was a good reboot.

Halloween's reboot was decent also....

Reboots is like Todays reality TV shows...everybodys doing it....

sigh...

I think Aronofsky will make a great Robocop film. Love that guy.

I hate to talk about the economy but I think the poor state of things is what is causing these remakes/reboots/sequels. Now more so than ever they'd rather make a film that has a built in fan base than take a gamble on something new and different.

In a way it's a good thing because that's what's greenlighting all our comic book films.

This has promise

and I would most certainly "buy that for a dollar" JonSolo HAHAHAHH! Favorite line of the flick, and still holds weight 20+ years later. I'll bet Aronofsky has some pretty good ideas on what to do...

But I'll tell you what I'd do...

I loved these movies, but the politics in these movies made businessmen look evil because they have money.
Phinehas
Phinehas - 6/11/2009, 9:22 PM
@ bleclercq: I don't agree. What it did was made these men who had so much money separate and unaccountable to society. Not so much that they had money, but they were as corrupt as anyone else *and had money*, which made them dangerous.

I liked Robocop 2. I liked that that woman reprogrammed him. I wish she bought the farm in the end, but instead the corporate guys were gonna pin the debaucle on her. Where's the justice in that? I guess I'm just one in a growing number of right-wing extremists...

A reboot and/or remake is not necessary for this film. The original is still a credible film despite the fact that Detroit is almost a ghost town now (from what I'm told by eye-witnesses). A movie that picks up the story from any point with the origin story already assumed in continuity would be sufficient to carry the franchise.
