The first part of Zack Snyder's Star Wars-inspired sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon, is now streaming on Netflix. We've already broken down the space-set adventure's action-packed conclusion (more here), and Snyder himself has now weighed in on the movie's twist ending and cliffhanger set-up for The Scargiver.

If you haven't watched A Child of Fire yet, major spoilers follow.

Towards the end of A Child of Fire, Charlie Hunnam's character, Kai, shows his true colors when he betrays his crew-mates by selling them out to Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein).

“He's not the bounty hunter with the heart of gold. He's a true rogue,” Snyder tells EW. “To put your faith in some guy you met in a bar is slightly naive. And that’s the fun of the subversive quality to [Rebel Moon’s] sci-fi roots. It does debunk, or at least play with, what you expect to happen.”

Kai's plan backfires, however, when he tries to force Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) to paralyse Kora. The "cowardly" farmer turns the tables and manages to ventilate Kai's head. We don't see much of the character's death due to PG-13 restraints, but we don't anticipate seeing the traitor in the next film!

“We were tempted to put him on the poster for movie 2, just so people would be like, ‘Of course he's going to make it through!’” Snyder adds.

Kai's heel turn isn't the only surprise, as the villainous Noble turns out to be a lot harder to kill than Kora realises. The ruthless admiral - who appears to be some sort of cyborg - is "resurrected" by Motherworld scientists, and he will be back to seek revenge in Part 2.

“It’s a prize fight concept,” Snyder says. “There will be a rematch!”

Have you watched Rebel Moon yet? If so, what did you think? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The heroes of Rebel Moon are: Kora (Sofia Boutella), an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back; Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium; Tarak (Staz Nair), a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons; Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks; and Milius (E. Duffy), a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World.

Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 21. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will debut on April 19, 2024.

Gonna watch it tonight and make up my own mind. Hope it's good but the reviews from my favorite reviewers have been brutal 🥲

@AmazingFILMporg - Yeah, give it a watch and make up you’re own mind about it. Personally, I found it to be in line with most of Zack’s stuff; it looks good but the story and everything else is a bit of a mess. I think he needs a writing team and a producing partner to keep him on track and focussed.

@AmazingFILMporg - it was entertaining just thin on characterization. It's not as bad as the Marvels or Ant Man 3 imo so it's watchable. It's a B movie with slow Mo and good cgi

@McMurdo -

Ugh, more slomo😅

The marvels wasn't that bad just generic. Ant-Man 3 was garbage🤡

If it's close to the marvels with it being a generic time waster and not insulting to my brain then I'll be glad. We shall see😳

@AmazingFILMporg - yes it's not Sucker punch or nearly as offensive as people have made out. It's better than the majority of Obi Wan imo

@AmazingFILMporg - I just finished watching. I didn't mind as it is just good popcorn movie. I don't get the Star Wars mentions though. This felt like Zack Snyder version of thr Showtime Spartacus show! My God they even had the mad Greek but so PG-13 LMAO!! Overall: meh. Wasn't expecting much so not disappointed.

It looks good, the music is good... but that's it. I treated it as a comedy and laughed hysterically, surely that was his intention. Right? Holy shit haha

@bobevanz - if you took a bunch of acid, then had a dream about a knock off Dune/Star Wars movie, this is the result. Written by an AI haha. Of course this is only my opinion. Surely I'm wrong lol

Is this even worth watching? Like is it so bad it's funny kind of thing, or did some of you find it surprisingly good?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/22/2023, 5:43 PM
@EgoEgor - it's pretty much what I've come to expect from Snyder. It has cool visuals and sideas, but it kinda just falls apart in the writing department. The whole mid section of the movie is just a collage of cool characters

@MisterDoctor217 - storywise, no. Action, yes. There isn't a ton of action, but there are definitely a lot of small moments with action (that are stretched out with slomo ofcourse)

It’s not a terrible movie. Same story we’ve seen multiple times but visually fun. People here are acting like they were expecting something like Citizen Kane but it’s a goofy sci fi Snyder film. Exactly what I was expecting.

Cliff hanger ending?

The fukc are you talking about?

The movie is everything Zack Snyder brings to the table. Well composed visuals, absolutely no substance or original ideas. Characters all look like people cosplaying a Final Fantasy game.

This a visually beautiful movie!

But it's still a lousy movie. The only cliffhanger question is, will the next movie suck too?

…yes it will suck.

Cliffhangers in movies generally suck. Less enthused to see this knowing there is one. Just write an ending for each movie even if there will be sequels.

Zack needs to be a really good filmmakers cinematographer. His visuals are always so satisfying but theyre let down by his writing and direction of the story.

Don't go in expecting anything more than yet another telling of 7 Samurai, A Bug's Life or Magnificent 7. And only the first half, at that. There's lot of fun to be had and looks great. Reminds me of the Krypton stuff in Man of Steel.
WhoCARES
WhoCARES - 12/22/2023, 3:36 PM
Interesting but not great. Point a-z to pickup people then telegraphed betrayal with fight at the end. Very thin story even the worst Star Wars contained more content the most interesting character for me was the robot and sits the whole movie. I’ll still watch the other 2 but definitely Netflix material.
Prork
Prork - 12/22/2023, 4:50 PM
Snyder's got an eye for visual flare and some cool ideas, but the vast majority of characters have nothing about at all them except for they each get a cool intro scene before they join the team, then they just hang about in the background while they move in to get the next recruit, I know it's only part one of two but honestly two or three of the characters could be cut and it would make zero difference to this movie.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/22/2023, 5:47 PM
@Prork - yeah, the whole midsection was just watching characters do a cool thing. And they were are recruited way too easily too. Especially the General dude
AleSir19
AleSir19 - 12/22/2023, 9:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - @Prork

I didnt watch the film (because after Army of Dead i am tired of Snyder no Sense)

But just reading the plot is just a copy of Seven Samurái, but without any of the substance.

Like the main character, Lives in a planet. She wants to defend. But she isn't even from that planet. She doesn't have any connection to it.

So it just feels Out of place.

In Seven Samurais the guys are defending their land, because it is their Home. Is the only thing they have and even worst they are gonna die if they lost it.

Here it doesn't make Sense.

Then in Seven Samurais each character has a trait, something AND they represent that old japanese moral code. That at the end, always end up losing and getting the worst part of the cake.

Here they are just...

Rogues. Without anything interesting to they...

And that plot twist of the main character being the "daugther" of the main villain?

Doesn't make Sense. The actor Is like 35 for god sake. CAST someone of 70 or 80 years old and make the villain a creepy old alien or something. Then it would make Sense.

Again like in Army of the Dead i think i Dodge a bullet.

An okay concept ripping off another master craft and process to make a piece of shit essamble piece that doesn't make Sense.

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/23/2023, 3:53 AM
@AleSir19 - without watching the movie, you definitely got right why it doesn't work.

It's has some cool visuals, worldbuilding and ideas, but it just really falls apart in the writing department and the pretentiousness of it
AleSir19
AleSir19 - 12/23/2023, 8:45 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Well it is Snyder after Man of Steel i dont expect anything different from him.

But i dont get it, i mean, Martín Scorsese, Nolan, Coppola, Wes Anderson, Spielberg, even i dont know Charlie Kaufmann...

All those guy are real genius and they are really humble, quiet guys.

Yes some directors like Tarantino or P.T. Anderson are pretty pretentious but they earn it.

But Snyder? What has done Snyder in his career that has earn him that spot in the industry?

I mean he did Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen, those are his only great films. Yo those you could add Sucker Punch who has a cool concept.

But since 2008 the guy has not done anything besides crap AND no sense, wasting the time and money of the industry AND moviegoers...

I dont get it.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/23/2023, 8:52 AM
@AleSir19 - I get it, I think. Man of Steel, and especially BvS and JL put him on the map. Whether it's positively or negatively, he did do something to get attention.

Guess for one side it's his grittiness and edgyness (i.e. the pretentious ''deconstructing the genre'' or whatever), and on the other it's people who just finally wanna see him crack the formula. Both agree he has cool visuals and ideas though.

I just think he needs a story and script writer. Like you say, DotD, 300 and Watchmen are his best, and those happen to be the ones where others wrote the story.
AleSir19
AleSir19 - 12/23/2023, 11:12 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I knew Snyder since Dawn of the Dead, AND he was a good director. I mean 300 and Watchmen are great adaptations, along with Sin City, i think they are easily the best CMB of all Time.

But after Sucker Punch, the guy lost direction.

For me Man of Steel did the opposite. In the moment i watch that film, i knew this guy didn't know what he was doing.

Man of Steel Is the worst adaptation of Superman, it got everything wrong.

So when the news broke that he was going to make Batman V Superman...

I knew...

It was the end. The end of all.

For me those DC films ruined Zack Snyder beyond repair.
