I think it’s important that the next trilogy of Star Wars films should be directed by the same person or persons. I think this is important to make sure that the feel of the films be cohesive. The list of should are directors who could be up to this gigantic task for continuing the films and the SHOULDN’T are a list of directors who, although are good directors, should avoid the films.
SHOULD
Joe Johnston
Mr. Johnston got his start in the film business on the very first Star Wars trilogy working in the visual effects department. Lucas and him became close friends and Lucas would later pay to have Johnston go to film school. Mr. Johnston did phenomenal work on Captain America: First Avenger.
The Wachowskis
Both are die hard nerd with a love for comics, although Star Wars is far more than just comics they would understand the importance of getting it right. They have a trilogy already under their belt with The Matrix which is arguably a tent pole movie for all CGI work.
Peter Jackson
Not much is needed to be said about Mr. Jackson. He also has a trilogy under his belt and a second trilogy finishing now. He has extreme amount of experience of taking literature that already has lore and canon and adapting it to fit into a movie.
SHOULDN’T
Christopher Nolan
Although Mr. Nolan as a trilogy under belt and knows how to make a good movie, he lacks the ablity to staying true to already set canon and sticking to other authors work.
Joss Whedon
Current Nerd Favorite director that I would love to see take a crack at Star Wars but lets be realistic Avengers 2, which he is directing, will be coming out the same year as the Next Star Wars and he would have absolutely no time to do both.
J. J Abrams
He did great transforming Star Trek to a modern Sci-Fi standard but that’s Star Trek and Star Trek is his brain baby. No way he would jump ship to work on Star Wars
Brad Bird
I can’t believe people are actually suggesting him. Ok yes he has worked with Disney in the past…in animation. He only has one live action movie under his belt and that was MI: Ghost Protocol, which was a standard action flick that anybody could have directed. Please keep him away from Star Wars.
Peter Jackson
Although I have him listed above he is also listed here because he will be very distracted in trying to finish editing and all the post production work on the Hobbit Trilogy. So most likely he won’t have time to do Star Wars.
