Editorial: Why I hope Mads Mikkelsen is playing Galen Marek in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

Ever since Mikkelsen put the name Galen next to his signature on some fan’s poster, people started speculating whether the great Danish thespian is in fact, portraying Galen Marek, the main character in both The Force Unleashed games (which are no longer canon). I for one, would like this to be true.

Who is Galen Marek?

Galen Marek - also known as Starkiller - was the apprentice of Darth Vader. Born on Kashyyyk as the son and only offspring of two Jedi who deserted during the Clone Wars, he was abducted by Vader after the death of his mom and dad (the latter at the hands of Vader).

How would the character be incorporated into the new Star Wars universe?

Have Mikkelsen play him. They do look somewhat alike.

While Galen Marek's previous origin could serve as a great base, there are some elements that would have to change if Mikkelsen is set to portray him.
First, Marek is said to have been born roughly 19 years before Luke destroyed the first Death Star, but since Mikkelsen is 50 years old – and Rogue One is taking place shortly before the events of A New Hope, this version of Marek would have had to be conceived much earlier: most likely even before the prequels! Although, this is an advantage, in the long run.
He could, and should still be the son of Jedi deserters – two Jedi's falling in love and leaving the order doesn’t seem to far-fetched – and it could also add further weight to why Jedi’s are forbid to marry (even if it's an ancient rule).

However, this Marek will never have been the apprentice of Darth Vader.
Instead, I'd suggest that his father, or both his parents should have been killed by someone else, someone who back then they thought was a friend: Count Dooku. It could be so simple as Dooku asking them to join him in his new direction, and they refuse and therefore he kills them.
Unable to receive proper training in the ways of the force, Mikkelsen's Marek spent years training himself with the help of his parents’ journals, but also by traveling the galaxy searching for other force users, so that one day, he would get revenge for his parents and face Dooku. Encountering both good and bad, this Marek ended up walking the line between good and evil and by the time we’re introduced to him in Rogue One, he’s our first encounter with a Gray Jedi.

Considering this Galen Marek had been unable to fully get revenge for his parents (since Anakin killed Dooku), Marek relocated into the shadows (before later finding out that Sidious was the one calling the shots). Then, when Sidious was revealed to be Palpatine, and his Empire was constructing a weapon that could wipe out whole planets - in a time when the Jedi are seemingly long gone - an aged Marek offers his talents to the Rogue One-mission to help prevent this monster of a weapon from being built, but also in order to try and avenge his parents, one last time.

The Possibilities This Creates

Spinoff

A spinoff, or anthology film, showcasing Galen Marek's earlier life as he travels the galaxy meeting other force users, looking for his revenge on Dooku. Possible encounters could be Qui-Gon Jinn pre-episode I (Jinn, often considered to be more Gray than his fellow Jedi Masters), Obi-Wan before, during or after the prequels, Darth Maul or Savage Oppress, perhaps even Anakin Skywalker or my personal favorite, Asajj Ventress.

Rogue One

Considering Rogue One is set to take place shortly before A New Hope, it seems likely that this version of Galen Marek wouldn't live to see the another day. However, it allows us to revisit Darth Vader once again (perphaps played by Hayden Christensen, but as always, voiced by the great James Earl Jones) as Marek goes to face him - possibly Sidious too - in order to buy the rebels the time they need to steal the plans. But even if Galen Marek bites the dust, at the very least we would get one last epic lightsaber battle out of Darth Vader, right?

All of this is mere wishful thinking from my part, but please share your thoughts below.

I respectfully have to disagree with this. Save Galen Marek for another time and have Mikkelsen play a new character. I honestly just cannot see Mikkelsen as Marek, even if he ends up being different from the force unleashed version.

@Cerebro

1000% agree with Cerebra, and it's been said that Witwer (Starkiller's face/actor) was approached/spoken to about TFA. So i don't see why they wouldn't have approached them for this.

That being said, no way would I want Mikkelsen playing Marek, he doesn't have any "badass" vibes to him.

With what you described, you might as well not even call him Galen Marek. The whole point of Galen is that he's Vader's apprentice. Taking away the amount of good people Galen kills makes him a completely different character entirely.

@Cerebro what?

I definitely expected people to disagree with me.

@DeusExSponge I wouldn't mind seeing TFU adapted into film, but I highly doubt they ever will. Plus, Marek did defeat Darth Vader in his storyline so I kind of feel like that would remove some significance from when Luke does it in ROTJ.

@Cerebro Sam Witwer, aka the guy from Being Human, is aging too and he's almost 40. There's no way he could play Galen Marek in a direct adaption of The Force Unleashed. And no, TFU is no longer canon.

@Arrowverse There was a time when I wanted Witwer too, but given his age and sadly, acting abilities I don't see them using him if they ever chose to include the character. I remember that Witwer said he was going to audition for a role that eventually was changed, and is not unlikely that they would have wanted him for some voice work given his history with the franchise, so that doesn't really mean he was up to play Marek again.
Also, if you don't think Mikkelsen can be "badass", you've obviously seen almost nothing of his work. I recommend Valhalla Rising especially, but also his take as Tristan in King Arthur and Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.

@ProselyteCanti I don't really agree that the point of Galen is that he's Vader's apprentice, although it's definitely significant in TFU. And this Galen could easily have killed some good people, considering Dooku wasn't revealed to be a Sith until Episode II, it's likely that my version would have encountered "good people" in search of him, people still loyal to the man and Jedi Dooku once was, and in his revenge-driven rage, battled and killed them.

I'm not arrogant enough to suggest that this is the best way to incorporate the character, it's merely a train of though so I appreciate everyone's comments.

Umm......let me think......hmm.........NO! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, and oh, btw, NO!!! Just no. Actually, HELL NO!

Seriously, all you fanboys, stop trying to make this Starkiller character someone to be used in these new movies. It's not going to happen anyway, and it's a stupid idea. If they didn't actually use Jacen and Jaina from the EU, they certainly aren't going to use a character that mainly comes from a video game. (And yes, I know they made a graphic novel based on the game. Still not going to happen.) And it's a really terrible idea. What, they're going to create a character who showed such huge Force abilities, greater Force abilities than have been shown in any movie. Yeah, they could tone those abilities down, but then all you fanboys would whine about him not truly being Starkiller and not following source material.

I loved the EU, and I was very disappointed when it was declared no longer canon. (And I don't think that is what George Lucas wanted. The authors had to follow fairly strict rules about what their stories could be about, and I believe that is because Lucas had a rough idea about what these next 3 movies would be about and wanted to make sure the EU didn't rule his ideas out. As much as I loved TFA, I would still love to know what ideas Lucas had in mind that Disney threw out. Although I doubt it will happen, I wish those stories would at least be turned into a book or graphic novel.) I would have especially liked to have seen Mara Jade, and the twins and Anakin Solo and Ben Skywalker, among others. Jacen's daughter too. But, now that the decision has been made and a new direction has been started, I don't really want those characters used. Leave those characters alone, and create new ones. (I do wish that Lucasfilm would continue those stories though. They could easily state that they are from an alternate timeline, similar to what has been done with Star Trek. They could just say that the explosion of the second Death Star caused a rip in dimensions, creating a duplicate universe that started right after. Everything in the EU would be one universe after Endor, while everything in the movies and new novels would be the other universe.)

I find it much more likely that Mikkelsen will actually be playing a younger version of Max Von Sydow's character from Episode VII.

The only issue with my theory is that Sydow's character is officially named Lor San Tekka.

But the novelization implies that Tekka was once "a great soldier of fortune" for the rebellion, and his line in the movie about Leia being royalty would tie right into him knowing her before the destruction of Alderaan, lining up perfectly with the timeline of Rogue One. Not to mention, their ages match up quite well when you consider the time frames of the two films.

This would give Sydow's character much more depth, and the direct connection between the two films might help to attract a greater audience, whom might not be as interested in the non-episodic films.

Now to examine the issue of names... Lor San Tekka might just be a pseudonym or a title. Perhaps his true name is Galen Tekka?

I don't know. It's just my own crazy theory, but I find it far more likely than them adapting an old no-longer-canon video game character, from a game series which will probably never see another installment.

Not that I dislike your theory, I just don't see it happening. And just in general, I also don't think we will be seeing much use of the force in this film.

@Philip I've seen his work, but there is a distinct difference in the badass, agile, and interesting a "badass" star wars character creates and one created by an actor who is visibly aged.
