J.J. Abrams Talks STAR WARS EPISODE VII And Whether Or Not He'll Direct STAR TREK 3

In a lengthy interview with Playboy, acclaimed director J.J. Abrams talks about his next project: Disney/LucasFilms' Star Wars: Episode VII, which is targeting a 2015 release. Of course, he won't let any story or casting details, but he does talk about being in control of both that franchise and Star Trek simultaneously. He then reiterates prior comments about originally turning down Star Wars, before being convinced th take the job, and he also confirms that he will be seeking feedback from series creator George Lucas. Finally, he confirms that directing Star Wars hasn't officially taken him out of the running to helm a third Star Trek film, saying that it's still a possibility. For much more from Abrams (in which he discusses Cloverfield 2, Stat Trek Into Darkness and an Alias movie), click the source link below.

On Being In Control Of Both The Star Trek And Star Wars Franchise:
"It is preposterous. Ridiculous. Completely insane. It really is. ... I mean, I get it. The worlds are vastly different. Honestly, that was why I passed on Star Wars to begin with. I couldn’t imagine doing both. But when I said that my loyalty was to Star Trek I was literally working on finishing this cut. I couldn’t even entertain another thought. It was like being on the most beautiful beach in the world and someone saying, “There’s this amazing mountain over here. Come take a look.” I couldn’t balance the two, so I passed on Star Wars."

On Originally Passing On Star Wars: Episode VII Before Finally Accepting The Job:
"It was a wild time. I was near the light at the end of the tunnel with my work on Star Trek. I felt I needed a bit of a breather, actually. But then Kathleen Kennedy [the new Lucasfilm head who oversees Star Wars] called again. I’ve known her for years. We had a great conversation, and the idea of working with her on this suddenly went from being theoretical and easy to deny to being a real, tangible, thrilling possibility. In the end it was my wife, Katie, who said if it was something that really interested me, I had to consider it."

On Being A Fan Of Star Wars, Approaching It And Asking George Lucas For Feedback:
"Here’s the thing. I try to approach a project from what it’s asking. What does it need to be? What is it demanding? With Star Wars, one has to take into account what has preceded it, what worked, what didn’t. There are cautionary tales for anything you take on that has a legacy—things you look at and think, I want to avoid this or that, or I want to do more of something. But even that feels like an outside-in approach, and it’s not how I work. For me, the key is when you have a script; it’s telling you what it wants to be.

"As with anything, because these are very different worlds, they shouldn’t feel the same aesthetically. They can’t. You’re right. But again, I don’t apply aesthetics first and fit a movie into that aesthetic. If I had come into Star Trek with those eyes, I would probably have been paralyzed. The advantage here is that we still have George Lucas with us to go to and ask questions and get his feedback on things, which I certainly will do. With Star Trek it was harder because I wasn’t a Star Trek fan; I didn’t have the same emotional feeling, and I didn’t have Gene Roddenberry to go to. But I came to understand the world of Star Trek, and I appreciated what fans felt and believed about this universe and this franchise."

On Whether Or Not Star Wars Will Keep Him From Directing Star Trek 3:
"No. I would say it’s a possibility. We’re trying to figure out the next step. But it’s like anything: It all begins with the story."

I want him to be a part of the Star Trek sequel in SOME way. Definitely don't think its necessary that he direct it.

i have complete faith in this. as a die hard SW fan for over 30 years, you have to embrace the fact that last year we went from having no episode 7 an beyond to now being backed by a huge company that and also promises of episode 7+ more. with JJ driving an Kathleen sitting in the passenger seat we cant loose. i cant wait.

I Never cared for Star Trek until I saw the 09 movie. I think JJ is a good choice to helm the star wars franchise. Star Trek 09 pretty much had A new Hope written all over it.

1. Ship gets attacked by ship ten times its size
2. Kirk gets in a Bar fight
3. Pike talks about kirks destiny
4. The villain has a weapon capable of destroying a PLANET.
5. Both Kirk and Spock infiltrate neros ship to save captian pike.

I'm glad he's doing both. Hes a great director and by far the best today in the field of Sci-Fi. If anyone can make Star Trek and Star Wars modern while not straying too far from the source, it is Abrams. He's a genius.

So is Paramount gonna forgo releasing a movie in 2016 for Star Trek's 50th anniversary? I highly doubt that.

I believe Abrams can direct a great Star Wars movie, I'm just wondering how the script to be.

Yeah I want Sith to be in it, But I don't think they should be the main focus. Are we going to see Jaina, Jacen, Anakin (Solo), and Ben (Skywalker) or will we see a new group?

How do Han, Leia and, Luke fit into this? There are so many questions, I'm just a glad an Oscar writing is writing this instead of Lucas to be honest.

Getting feedback, and using feedback are to completely different things.

Say what you want about Lucas. But the fact is, he MADE Star Wars. He came up with the whole idea. He created some things that we hate like, Jar Jar Binks and Ewoks, but he also created things like the Lightsabers, Han Solo, Boba Fett.

Let's not act like Lucas didn't have anything to do with Star Wars. Because the fact is: No Lucas, No Star Wars.
As long as he isn't writing or directing the new sequels, nobody should complain about him being involved in a very very small role.

I'm just excited to see new characters. Although the prequels sucked, nothing gave me more goosebumps than when they introduced General Grievous.

And I hope I get that same vibe again, but please don't ruin already good characters and do NOT bring back Darth Vader

I'm glad to hear that he is not letting his preconceptions of SW inform his decisions here. That hints at a potential for growth and fresh ideas which this series desperately needs and hopefully signals an end to the homages, the recycling of previous movie moments and characters! Just hope Michael Arndt Feels the same way.

"Let's not act like Lucas didn't have anything to do with Star Wars. Because the fact is: No Lucas, No Star Wars. "

Fact is Star Wars has grown beyond Lucas. And this is what he wants as well which was one of the reasons he sold the franchise to Disney. Lucas' story evolved into the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker. Anything he contributes to this new trilogy or anything after is completely made up on the spot. Also the PT shows that the Lucas of today is not like the Lucas that created it. Evidence being that when he was writing the PT he threw out all his old notes and created Qui-Gon Jin. No Star Wars will be just fine without Lucas.

@Panoramacon I love the fact that Lucas sold Disney, we need new directors to show their vision of Star Wars. I think actually think that the prequels were bad in large part because of Lucas.

But I'm not going to forget the good things he brought to Star Wars. And I don't believe people should act like asking Lucas for an opinion is very bad or significant in anyway.

Getting a little feedback from Lucas is one thing but I would feel better if someone would ask Abrams if he believes that Han Shot First. Then depending on his answer I will know if these movies will be in better hands then old man Lucas. Young Lucas was great Old man Lucas is sh*t.

My god, theres a possibility he might do it, it will really mean JJ is in charge of the two greatest sci-fi franchises at once

quickly someone hide Doctor Who from JJ...

But yeah, I think they should aim for 2016 to get Star Trek 3 (or 13 if you like) out. Its the 50th anniversary of Star Trek in 2016 plus once JJ Abrams is done with Star Wars Ep 7, he can move straight on to Star Trek 3 and finish out his origin trilogy (Im guessing its going to be an origin TRILOGY because of the remarks made about the latest movie that the crew still arent the crew from the original tv series because they are still learning)

And Klingons as the main villains for the third movie, after being involved in the first two and [frick]ed over by Nero (and John Harrison by the looks of one of the trailers), they are angry. Plus it would be fitting to use one of the original and greatest villains of Star Trek in its 50th year

If there is any possible way to get Peter Jackson to do the third Star Trek movie, they should do it.

He would make the type of movie that would please both Old and new fans.

JJ makes Star Wars, Jackson makes Star Trek. Everybody wins.

Probably won't happen, but it would still be cool.

I hope JJ avoids the weird political underpinnings that dominated the prequels. The story was so contrived, and the action felt like they were meeting a status quo for light saber battles to keep fans happy. There wasn't any flow or rythym to the prequels, the story was bland, the dialogue sucked, chemistry between characters was lacking, and everything looked cgi. The originals were good vs evil, tale of the hero and his friends stuff. They had a very basic mythology, set in a spectacular world. The chemistry between the actors was something you rarely see. We don't need a complicated SW film with plot twists. I want adventure.

I would love to see scale models and matte paintings come back for these. I don't know why but the painting back then seems more real looking than the cgi backgrounds today. ILM did amazing things back then and those techniques really still work. What better way to keep the classic look of SW than to use the classic f/x.

I really enjoy both ST and SW, old and new, so I hope we continue to see these franchises develop, so I can experienced them with my kids for the fist time. I remember watching ST and SW (and 007) in the theaters with my dad; best times of my life.

@moraga Yep Disney has nothing to do with the Iron Man,Thor, and Captain America movies being a success...it's not like they are the same company that owns Marvel or anything...Oh wait.

Disney hires a great director and an Oscar award winning writer to write the new movie, and you don't think there is some chance they can bring Star Wars back to relevancy?

The only really bad thing they've done so far is shut down LucasArts, and it's not even that bad.
