LOGAN Director James Mangold Shares New Details On His "Dawn Of The Jedi" STAR WARS Movie

James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) has shared some intriguing new details on his planned Star Wars movie, which has been (unofficially) dubbed "Dawn of the Jedi."

One of the most exciting announcements to come out of Star Wars Celebration earlier this year was the news that Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold was set to helm a Star Wars movie unlike any we've seen before.

Specific plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that the untitled film will be set 25,000 in the past during an entirely new and unexplored era in the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that the movie will focus on the "Dawn of the Jedi Order," but based on what Mangold says in a new interview with Gizmodo, the story may actually predate the emergence of the legendary Jedi Knights.

"For me, it’s about, I want to be part of the saga, but I also don’t want to be holding so much lore in the air that you can hardly tell a story. And what I really wanted to do, what I told her, was just can we make a kind of the Ten Commandments of the Force, you know? A kind of origin story of how the Force came to be known, understood, wielded, and harnessed.”

So, it sounds like the movie will really be more about the origin of the force and the first people to harness it than an exploration of the first fully-fledged Jedi.

Mangold is currently working on his Bob Dylan biopic, and also has a Swamp Thing movie on his schedule. When asked when this Star Wars project may enter production, the filmmaker said it was simply "impossible to answer."

A Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi Dark Horse comic series by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema was released in 2012 which chronicled the origin of the Jedi (Je'daii) Order, but we have no idea if that story will influence Mangold's movie.

@marvel72 - It's our contemporary myths and legend. The seminal stories of mankind

This could be really good for Star Wars as a franchise, or really bad.

I don't know how much the origins of the force have been explored in other media, but if it's not done well in a mainstream movie, if it takes away some of the magic and mystery (or what remains of it after Midichlorians), then this will be a misstep.

I've always been more interested in Star Wars because of the mythology and setting rather than the quality of projects, so let's hope they don't ruin that for me.

@Fares - Totally agree with what you're saying. The mystery of large ideas can really add to the grandness of the them. If the origin isn't handled well it really throws off the balance of whatever lore comes after it. Especially when what comes after is extremely fleshed out.

I would almost think you're just as boxed in telling an origin story when the future has been so designed. You're still beholden to the same ideas in the sense that you can't go and doing anything wildly different.

@Fares - Agree with what you are saying here.

Going back to ancient origins of something carries a lot of risk. If the explanation provided isn’t satisfactory to the audience, it can ruin the overall mythology.

The show Lost had a deep mythology and mysterious backgrounds of things. But many people found the explanations behind the mysteries that were revealed in the later seasons to be underwhelming.

With Star Wars, there was already a ton of backlash about midichlorians. Imagine how much it could anger folks if the origin of the Jedi, the force, or other Star Wars mythos doesn’t resonate.

@RedFury - it’s far enough in the past that he CAN go wildly different though… there’s no reason that something set a few thousand years prior, where they don’t even have the most basic understanding of the force, would look anything like the galaxy we already see in screen. Hell, our own world has changed so much in just a hundred years that going back 15-20k should be a massive change in that world.
RedFury
RedFury - 6/15/2023, 11:08 AM
@Deklipz - I hear you, and I agree when it comes to how the galaxy operates, the philosophies it holds, different species, so on and so forth. But when it comes to the force, they can't really go and add anything to it like new force powers, etc. And if they start straying from the ideas of what the force is it may make the futures version of the force either seem way less cool, or way cooler than the one they're trying to portray in their story.

Though I may be wrong, and am open to the film none the less. Love me some Star Wars, good or bad lol.

@Fares - It's dumb, they can even go into a time before the old republic and create a new setting and characters, this is kind of an uninspiring idea. Origin films usually suck

Frak this show and everyone involved. They are attempting a Doctor Who Timeless Child type story here, same thing they did with the Witcher and many other popular long running franchises.

The sensible thing to do would be the discovery of the force thru the Dark Side.

Now does Disney want to show that the force was discovered thru anger, rage, violence, killing?

We shall see.

Because “Logan director” sounds a lot better than…

“Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny” writer and director.

@TyrantBossMedia -

After the car crash that is Indiana Jones And The Dial Destiny, do you want him to ruin Star Wars?

Actually I take that back, make Star Wars worse than it already is.

@marvel72 - Personally Ill give Mangold a pass for Dial of Destiny. Obviously I haven’t seen it yet, but if it is as bad as I’ve heard, I imagine the studio didn’t let him make the movie he would have wanted to on his own.

In addition to Logan, Ford v Ferrari and 310 to Yuma are both amazing. He also has several other good movies.

I’ll give him that one pass. I’m more concerned about future Star Wars projects because of Kathleen Kennedy and LucasFilm overall than any individual directors.

@mountainman - He did Cop Land as well.

@marvel72 - Mangold left alone is a good director.

Anybody + Kathleen Kennedy = Crap

@marvel72 - Another gem.

I’d say Knight and Day was his only movie I remember not liking.
Arthorious

@marvel72 - I'll give him a pass because of his track record of great films: Logan, Ford v Ferrari, Walk the line. Every great director has a dud every now and again (well except Tarantino and Cameron)

@TyrantBossMedia @mountainman @marvel72 -

Honestly Mangold is one of the best director out there if handed the right project and freedom

Cop Land
Identity
Walk the Line
Logan
Le Mans 66

But in-between those it's like he does one for the studio where he doesn't have control :

-Kate and Leopold
-Night and Day
-Wolverine
-Indiana Jones

It's been a deal as old as cinema, the "do this for us, and you can have free reigns on your next one". Might have been what Mangold got with Disney with Indy-Star Wars.

Let's hope.
mountainman
mountainman - 6/17/2023, 7:08 AM
@Usernametaken - He certainly has more good than bad in his catalog.

What concerns me is that if he allowed Lucas Film to influence Indy, it’s tough to believe he wouldn’t with Star Wars. Same studio. Same leadership wanting the same types of messages and influence on the projects.

This is squarely in the same category as all other Stat Wars stuff right now - be skeptical until there is a good reason to not be. At this point, Andor is the only exceptional thing they have going. Everything else is bad to at best flawed.
Usernametaken
Usernametaken - 6/17/2023, 8:28 AM
@mountainman - It all depends on how many times Disney will have to spend an ungodly amount of money on mediocre movies and tvshows before they start rethinking they're approach.

Andor was a good sign, and Disney just changed leadership. There is still hope.

My 2 cents is that Disney productions generally needs more time spent writing, more freedom for directors, less green screen/Volume replaced by more practical sets. If they change all this, maybe their expensive actors will care enough to actually act.
mountainman
mountainman - 6/17/2023, 8:45 AM
@Usernametaken - Those are all valid points.

I’m just a believe it when I see it kind of guy.

Love Mangold but I’m still hesitant about this. Even if we ignore the recent rocky track record that Star Wars has, going way back to the beginning for origins is always a risky move. It’s tough to do it in a satisfactory way.

Can't wait for the first jedi to be this young girl (that strangely looks like Kathleen Kennedy) who can just solve every problem instantly. Then it ends with her getting a force vision of Vader, then she says "great. All those men are gonna ruin my perfect jedi order. Well at least this rey girl will fix everything". Then credits.

Disney will blame toxic fans for this movie failing 🤣

This shit is predictable
WarMonkey

@Origame - I expect to this to be the literal plot. Same as the other properties that got this "where it all REALLY started" BS that the billion dollar companies that bought these franchises up keep doing.

So it's gonna be a classic example of the Lightsaber and Sandal genre.

"So, it sounds like the movie will really be more about the origin of the force and the first people to harness it than an exploration of the first fully-fledged Jedi."

Isn't that how this has been reported from the very beginning?
captainireland

He doesn't say it will explore the origins of the Force, he says it will explore the origins of how people became aware of the Force. Those are two very different things. Like the difference between exploring the origins of the universe and the origins of how people became aware that the universe exists.
