STAR TREK Actor Simon Pegg Shares Why He Thinks Those Fans Are More Inclusive Than Toxic STAR WARS Fandom

Simon Pegg is one of only a few actors to have been part of the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, and he's now shared what could prove to be some potentially divisive thoughts about the differences between the two fandoms.

Before we get to that, there's no getting around the fact that we've seen an unflattering side of Star Wars fans since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Almost every diverse actor (both in terms of gender and race) given a leading role has been attacked online, and sadly, there's an awful lot of toxicity to be found, particularly on social media.

In the video below, Pegg is asked for his take on which fans are most difficult to please between Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. He responded by saying, "To be honest, and as someone who was kind of, you know, ticked off about the prequels when they came out, the Star Wars fan base really seems to be the most, kind of, toxic at the moment."

"I'm probably going to be very controversial to say that," he added. Predictably, his point would be proven when those same "fans" on social media decided to take aim at Pegg for sharing this opinion, accusing him of being "woke" and pushing back against being dubbed "toxic."

As you'll likely recall, the actor made a cameo appearance as Unkar Plutt in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and played Scotty in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Addressing those roles, Pegg drew a stark contrast between the two groups of fans.

"I find that Star Trek fans have always been very, very inclusive. You know, Star Trek's about diversity. It has been since 1966; it always was. There's no sort of, like, 'Oh, you're suddenly being woke now.' Star Trek was woke from the beginning," he explains. "You had a Japanese navigator, just after the Second World War. There was a Black woman on the deck in a position of authority. This is massively progressive."

"Star Wars, suddenly there's a little more diversity, and everyone's kicking off about it, and it's really sad, you know."

Ultimately, Pegg is right about much of what he's saying here and it is disgusting to see how anyone who isn't a white male has been rejected by such a large number of so-called fans (Obi-Wan Kenobi's Reva is a recent example, but characters like Finn, Rey, and Rose Tico all instantly spring to mind). Hopefully, the fanbase can evolve moving forward.

Oh ffs. This is all so goofy. It's a [frick]ing movie series. Relax. People and their soapboxes. Bad things are bad. Bad people are bad. We get it!

@DarthOmega - Nah let's not relax. As long as people are going to be toxic and racist, there needs to be people constantly calling them out for it.
RedFury

@BB8ANG - You are absolutely right. We'll relax when those toxic bigots shut their mouths.

@DarthOmega - That sounds a lot like "Boys will be boys" when explaining sexual harassment and college rape. It's that way of thinking that has bigots and predators thinking they can do whatever whenever they want.

@BB8ANG -

How brave of you.

No. This isn't what this is. This is people online standing on their high horse and soapboxes declaring everyone who disagrees with them to be racists. Or It's saying the obvious. Bad things are bad. Yeah, we know. I'm black. I've dealt with racists before. Conflating online trolls with Star Wars fans is plain lazy. You don't look heroic saying bad things are bad.

In fact the opposite has happened. The wedge is being driven in further. You really think coming to a comic book movie website and calling people bigots actually does anything to stop racism? You think going around in echo chamber saying "People are racist, they shouldn't be" Forwards the conversation in any meaningful way? It doesn't.

Right now real movements have been highjacked by people who don't give an actual shit about other cultures but would like to appear virtuous online to their peers whose faces they have never, and will never see.

Make a comment against racism. Woohoo, look at all the likes I have. I'm such a progressive. No you're not. Most of it's performative at best. Lazy armchair activism. Lots of issues in the world concerning race. A handful of trolls online saying racist shit to get a reaction, and sites like this using it for clicks does [frick] all for race relations. It's a circle jerk of virtue signalers, and it's annoying at best.

@SonOfAGif - It sounds like that to you. You usually go to extremes so that's not a surprise. I have not excused racism and ffs don't bring that rape shit here. I swear I'm the one here who has actually dealt with bigots being a black guy, and you guys bring up the word on every other article. It's tiring. It's an echo chamber. "I'm standing up to bigots" Good for you. So is 90% of the rest of society. Want a cookie? Do NOT conflate my words with "Boys will be boys" in relation to rape. That's bullshit. This article is about Star Wars and online trolls. Stop taking it to extreme places.

@BB8ANG - as long as it's actually toxic behavior, sure.

As long as it's actual racism, sure

Sadly more often than not both terms and accusations are nothing more deflection tactics done by the studio to try and de-legitimize actual valid criticism

@RedFury - and proof of these claims be damned!!! The stinking mob don't need no proof!!!!

Proof is the devil and probably a far right nazi conspiracy!!!!

@DarthOmega - every single one of these people here are Performative. Every single one of them is nothing more than a Social Media Activist.

And EVERY SINGLE ONE of them would furtively cross the street if you and 2 black friends were walking towards them on the sidewalk. Their inherent racism and Bigotry of Low Expectations leads them to believe that everyone is like them. That's why they see racism in everything.....cause they thought the racist thoughts first.

They probably fall into the group of people that think black people aren't smart enough to get Voter ID

@Toblakai -@DarthOmega These conversations go the same way everytime with people like this don't they. A billion dollar corporation makes an accusation, fails to provide any proof AT ALL, and then a bunch of minions come out to defend the lack of quality and care given to the products that are being sold to us.

It's all so tiresome and now they are using the term "bigot" which is what I called many on this site last year. Instead of proving me wrong they ignored my challenge and have continued to prove me correct. They'll continue to push a narrative they want to be true. Their ignorant bigoted attacks will continue on people they have judged and lumped together based on their racist and sexist way of thinking of others who don't think like they do.

Some people look at a person and see an individual and others see a representative for a group and then judge them based on whatever BS is in their minds.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 7/22/2022, 12:10 PM
@WarMonkey - They are insufferable, and their numbers are legion. You can always count on Josh to put forth some silly article, and the usual annoying virtue signaling, self righteous goons to give their predictable 2 cents.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 7/22/2022, 12:12 PM
@Toblakai - It's getting worse. Every article it's the same shit. This site is no longer fun to visit. Politics, as always have ruined a good thing. But acting like an activist is the current thing for empty people. Unremarkable people jumping on issues they know nothing about to appear virtuous. Not a single one of them would come within two miles of where I grew up.
BB8ANG
BB8ANG - 7/22/2022, 5:36 PM
@WarMonkey - Are we calling Simon Pegg a billion dollar corporation now? That's the problem with this thinking. It always comes down to the assumption that people can't actually EMPATHIZE with others, without wanting virtue points (or whatever you think people do it for) in return. It's always projection.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 7/23/2022, 6:52 AM
@BB8ANG - He's defending Disney through numerous media companies. I empathize with the millions of people that are being falsely accused of racist and sexist hate by these people. Someone makes a claim like that about me or many others then you better show proof. No-one can provide it yet this narrative keeps being pushed and it's disgusting for people to do to others. We just want a good story with good characters in the SW universe.
Toblakai
Toblakai - 7/26/2022, 12:36 AM
@WarMonkey - agreed. And thats why people like us need to attack and destroy these infantile minions at every opportunity. To let them continue with their nonsense unobstructed and unchallenged isn't acceptable. They must be met at every turn and smacked down. You might not change their mind as they're clearly a lost cause for the most part, but some anon might see the comment and start using their brain instead of simply regurgitating whatever dreck is pumped into their head.
Toblakai
Toblakai - 7/26/2022, 12:46 AM
@DarthOmega - just another batch of illiberal morons virtue signaling for clout. Slacktivists to the Nth degree.

The talk about being this and that but I'd wager a solid 98% of them have never done a single thing to actually make the world a better place, no matter how small rhe gesture.

These are the same type of people that piss and moan about racism but don't actually know any black people and in all likelihood would cross the street if they saw a group of 3 black dudes walking towards them on the sidewalk.

I've come to the conclusion that the reason they're so obsessed with racism and so over the top in their response to racism......is because they are actually incredibly racist. So they overcompensate all while accusing everyone else of being racist.

Because let's face it...if such examples of human perfection and nobility are actually racist deep down....why then, everyone else just HAS to be. Because if everyone else isn't...then that means they're the bad guy. And they could never come to terms with the reality of that.

@TheSuperMex - Specify what you mean by fandom please? Didn't Jake say it was his classmates and the media that upset him, I don't recall completely? But I do recall Ahmad and what he said and what was reported by the media and still is which contradicts what he said and what I saw as a fan back then. Here's a link to his Twitter comment where he calls out the media specifically and only....

There's no sort of, like, 'Oh, you're suddenly being woke now.'

There are people who are like this about virtually everythig. Discovery definitely got its share of such complaints. Picard as well. I mean, we live in a time where it's become sort of an annual tradition for folks to be dismayed to discover that Rage Against The Machine have suddenly become political.
