STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley On Why She Returned For REY Movie And Whether Her Sequel Co-Stars Will Also Return

Daisy Ridley has said it was a "cool as sh*t" idea which brought her back to Star Wars and comments on the possibility of moving forward as Rey Skywalker without any of her sequel trilogy co-stars...

A great deal has been said about the upcoming Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley's return as Rey Skywalker. This month alone, we've seen conflicting reports about whether the project still has a writer but, as of now, it looks like this sequel to the divisive sequel trilogy is on track for a December 2026 debut.

Variety (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke the actress and asked for her thoughts on how having a female filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, is likely to impact the franchise. For clarification, this will mark the first time a woman has directed a Star Wars movie; several have helmed episodes of TV shows like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

"The short answer is I don’t know. I’m excited to do the job, but not because Sharmeen is a woman," Ridley responded. "Her documentaries are amazing. Her idea for the story is cool as sh*t. No spoilers, but she gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, 'OK, call me in five years.' But it’s worthwhile."

As for whether she'll find it odd making a Star Wars movie without fellow sequel trilogy co-stars Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac, the actress added, "No, because I don’t know what is what or who is who [in the new movie]. So much has happened for me [since the Skywalker saga]. I feel like a grown-up now. When I first started, I was, like, 20. I was the youngest on set."

"It took me the first two 'Star Wars' films to feel worthy of being there," Ridley continued. "Now I’m in my 30s. The whole thing feels quite different. I’ve been able to work with other filmmakers, and hopefully, I’ve got better as a performer."

The fact she doesn't know whether those actors will return isn't a shock, though we wouldn't expect her to reveal otherwise! However, they've all pretty much closed the door on doing more Star Wars, and of the three, Finn's story as a possible Jedi is arguably the one most fans would like to see continue.

When it comes to the rest of Lucasfilm's current Star Wars plans, James Mangold has been hired by the studio to tell the story of the first Jedi thousands of years in the past. Another movie, this time from Dave Filoni, will be set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian for a crossover event which is expected to put Grand Admiral Thrawn front and centre.

However, as we learned earlier this month, Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian & Grogu is up first. That may or may not be a replacement for The Mandalorian season 4, but it's clear Disney is relying on that titular duo to reignite interest in the franchise not on streaming, but in theaters.

Then, there's this Rey project, a movie taking us back to the sequel trilogy for a story set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be at the helm and, as noted, Ridley will reprise her role as Rey, now a Jedi Master looking to create a new Jedi Order while attempting to combat the dark forces that rise up to stop her. What those are remains to be seen.

Keep checking back here for Star Wars updates as we have them.

Why does Disney not care anymore?

They DESTROYED 2 Major Franchises!

She spoke very clearly after The Rise of Skywalker about not being able to get much of any work. For better or worse with those 3 movies, she loves the character, and has a chance to not end with a movie that disappointed SO many people. Plus, money.

@MosquitoFarmer - Her as an actress make up the best parts of that awful trilogy. The character of Rey however leaves a lot to be desired. But Daisy herself was never a problem.

That said, she hasn’t been capable of much after these movies, which makes it hard to judge the caliber of actress she is or can be.

@MosquitoFarmer - not gonna go well because this new story is literally Luke's post ROTJ story and arc. The fans ain't gonna be about that. I'll watch it but this director and writer team.......come on. Kennedy needs to have that sit down with Marcia Lucas.

@MosquitoFarmer - the question is whether she was regularly getting work before she took the SW role... if not, then not much has changed. Mark Hamill didn't really flood the screens outside of SW, nor did Carrie Fisher... the only one that really made a go of acting was the carpenter on the set of American Graffiti, Harrison Ford.

I’ve never understood the hate for her… I think he acting was good. She’s not the one who wrote and directed the sequel trilogy. If we should be blaming anyone, its JJ, Kennedy and Kasdan… making episode 7 a reboot of episode 4 was the biggest mistake they made
McMurdo
McMurdo - 1/26/2024, 9:36 AM
@NOID - Kasdan was simply happy to be working gain but yes for the guy who wrote ESB he failed us....but it sounded like JJ pretty much came up with the remake story and Kasdan was there because he can actually write a screenplay.

@NOID - I saw a lot of memes and comments saying Rey is crap, I never saw any saying Daisy Ridley is.

I think you're the one confusing both.

@Usernametaken - Exactly this. Rey was a poorly written character. Daisey Ridley is great.

@bobevanz - she doesn't get roles so yes the story is irrelevant.

So Sharmeen the Documentarian activist came up with the story for the next Star Wars move but she can't write or she'd be writing her film so Steven Knight who also can't write is writing her story for her.

This is gonna go really well.

Wasn't Lindelof the one who wrote the script before he got kicked out so that Disney could take his story and make it into a Rey movie?

This might surprise some but I like Daisy. In interviews she doesnt seems like your normal, woke, out of touch actor. Shes funny and you can tell she was enjoying the ride. Sadly, SW did not for her and she cant seem to get work. I dont blame her for taking a payday.

That said, there is going to be a mjor majority of fans that will never forgive Disney for giving her Luke's arc. The Rey character is forever flawed because of the way she was written and without the nostalgia of the original three, I cant see this movie doing well. The Director doesnt help, a lot of the fan base will sit it out on principle. Disney has to learn you can turn on your core fan base because they are the ones who show up when the normies dont.

I know that many people on this site are very cynical & jaded so I’m not exactly surprised by the response of thinking she’s doing it just for the money (which I’m sure helps)….

However , she has been doing more indie or mid budget movies since the sequel trilogy which she seems to be happy with and has more coming down the pipeline , including a tv show she is producing so she is keeping herself busy and good for her i feel.

Personally , I am intrigued by this though I do have a bias since it’s also the first Pakistani to direct a SW film which makes me proud as one aswell (I also liked her work on Ms Marvel)…

However , I also like Rey and am interested to see how she has changed post sequel trilogy aswell as a Jedi Master teaching others (still think the 15 year time jump is a bit too much though).

Regardless , I hope it happens and turns out well , hoping for the best as always!!.

A job and money.
I do remember her in a interview on Graham Norton moaning about not having a job. Must be hard for actresses on 10000% more salary than minimum wage.

So to sum up:

Those last 3 SW movies were completely horrible & took a giant dump on the legacy of Star wars while giving the 3 original stars all horrible send offs.

Why would they want anyone else back from those awful movies? Rey was passable. Poe was okay. Ren was very bad. Finn was horrible.

Ridley can't get another decent paying job because most everyone in Hollywood saw those rotten movies.

JJ Abrams & Rian Johnson should spend the rest of their lives in a liberal feminist leper colony begging for the forgiveness that will never come.
