STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Teases Plans For REY Movie To Take The Franchise In A "Different Direction"

Daisy Ridley will reprise her Star Wars role as Rey Skywalker in an upcoming movie set during the "New Jedi Order" era and, in a new interview, she teases a "fantastic exploration" of the franchise...

The expectation had been that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's untitled follow-up to The Rise of Skywalker would be the first Star Wars movie in theaters since the Skywalker Saga wrapped up in 2019. However, it was last week that Lucasfilm announced plans for The Mandalorian & Grogu to come first.

Obaid-Chinoy's movie, starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, is still on the way and may or may not arrive before Dave Filoni or James Mangold's respective projects (the latter, if it even happens after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombed, is probably the furthest off).

Lindelof and Justin Brit-Gibson originally teamed up to pen the script - set during what's since been dubbed the "New Jedi Order" era - only for creative differences with Lucasfilm to lead to their departure. It didn't take long before Steven Knight, who created Peaky Blinders, came on board only for work to be halted by the WGA strike.

We recently learned that his draft still hasn't been handed into Lucasfilm and there's a chance the studio will now seek someone else to handle the rewrite.

Talking to AlloCiné (via SFFGazette.com), Ridley shared what she knows about her upcoming Star Wars movie and confirmed the story - she still hasn't read a screenplay - was enough to convince her to return as Rey.

"That was actually quite last minute. I was actually making my own film last year, and Kathy Kennedy said she wanted to have breakfast. And I thought we were just having breakfast. So there I was, having my breakfast, and she goes 'Oh, by the way, we might do another one.' And I’m like 'Okay...'"

"So I thought about it for a little bit and once I knew what the story was and everything I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction."

Rey's return will take us the furthest we've been beyond the Skywalker Saga in Disney's new "canon" and can hopefully address many of the lingering questions we had after watching the sequel trilogy. However, given how divisive that was, there's a good chance it will largely move on from what we see there in order to establish Rey as her own woman (whether her "Palpatine" of "Skywalker" heritage will come into play remains to be seen).

Last year, Ridley shared a similar update when she revealed Lucasfilm has only told her about one movie, with the door open for potentially more stories set during this period in Star Wars history.

"I know the storyline for one film. That's not to say that that's all it is, but that's what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don't know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited."

The only confirmed details about this still-untitled Star Wars project are that it will be directed by Obaid-Chinoy and is set 15 years after the last events of the Skywalker Saga. We'll reunite with Rey and follow the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down.

As always, we'll keep you updated as we learn more.

Yawn. Star Wars is going to have to release multiple quality projects in a row to prove it isn’t in the garbage bin.

No rumors or announced projects mean anything until we can see a demonstrated track record of quality.

@mountainman - basically earn the trust back. Make good movies with good characters and growth.

@Arthorious - Yes but it has to be consistent. Andor was great, then right after that, Mando season 3 was a huge drop in quality from the first 2. They have to have multiple projects from different creative teams be good in a row to start earning trust back.

Wait... does that mean they are actually going to try and make a good film?
Filled with things like character development!????

Surely not?

@DevilsDreams - nah. It's different in the way a woman is "finally" shaping a star wars story 🤣

@Origame - You know, that's one thing that did really piss me off with it all...
In the now legacy books, Han and Leia had twins, Jacen and Jaina, Jaina was actually a badass character and she ended up becoming the "Sword of the Jedi", she was a deep character that had and overcame flaws, a good character development, instead we ended up with Mary Rey Sue...

The most exciting thing about Star Wars for me right now is that Bill Burr is in it, and no one ever expected him to be in it given how much he loved to shit all over it.

@MosquitoFarmer - and they even gave him the arc in one episode that Finn should've had in the whole trilogy too

@GeneralChaos - No, he shit on it cause people liked it. He never actually disliked the series; he’s talked bluntly about it tons.

@MosquitoFarmer - He made fun of people for liking it and now people are liking him in it so now he gets it.

I'm sure this movie will be either cancelled or director replaced but still

Just let the star wars die. You talk star wars with someone and people just say ewwww.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/15/2024, 11:54 AM
@MartianManHuntr - It's already had the main creative replaced. Damon Lindelof was writing it. I'm not sure if he was directing, but he wanted Helen Mirren to play Rey.

So the movie has already been drastically changed from the original creative vision.

@ObserverIO - Oh I know. I'm saying they will replace director once again or probably cancel it altogether.

This movie will bomb. Wont reach $1billion. If they properly wrapped up the Skywalker saga, and then introduced Rey in a new set of films there wouldnt have been a problem.

It'll forever be the Palpatine Saga masquerading as a Skywalker Saga
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 1/15/2024, 11:18 AM
We got three Rey focused movies. I don't mind Rey being a supporting character but she does not have the fanbase like Din Djaren, Grogu, Obi Wan, or Luke Skywalker have. In fact I feel like Bo Katan could bring in a bigger fanbase for a solo movie.
Cleander

@SonOfAGif - Bo-Katan and her bad wigs, nope I don't see it. she will never be movie worthy give me Rey every day of the week

No real solid plan. If you want to do 3 new films, you better block out a story that can BE three films. The "Make it up as we go" model doesn't work.
SATW42
SATW42 - 1/15/2024, 11:27 AM
@CaptainCheese - Yes because George really did have 9 movies planned in advance, and toooootally knew all along that Luke and Leia were brother and sister when he made the first movie. It's tooootally normal and not creepy to imagine the first star wars poster with leia drapped around her brothers leg and think George knew they were brother and sister.

Maybe if these next three movies have a solid plan we can have more senate hearings about trade. That's what happened when George actually "planned"
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/15/2024, 11:40 AM
@CaptainCheese @SATW42 - George didn't have a plan either with the OT, but atleast he kept them going in directions that fit with where it was already kinda leaning towards.

The way I see it, both the originals and the sequels subvert what came before. Only difference is, the originals turned things upside down whereas the sequels jusf kept make illogical 180s.

Mandalorian, Trawn and now episode 10 without the balls to actually call it episode 10
Thats a pretty cool line up for me the tv shows they kill all the excitement. Episode 10 should be a huge event and it feels like a joke! But i'm glad Daisy is back she was the highlight alonside Ren

They need to change the overriding premise of the Star Wars universe so that they can move on from the Palpatine era.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 1/15/2024, 12:47 PM
@Forthas - How about Force users who have developed a sort of gang of pirates and mauraders similar to Crimson Dawn but use weapons that lightsabers cannot pierce similar to beskar steel.
Forthas
Forthas - 1/15/2024, 8:44 PM
@SonOfAGif - How about a world where most of the Force users are Sith and the few that Rey trains are facing extinction as the Sith are hunting them.

I can go either way on this. Can't really recreate the magic of the originals, but they need to stick to very core of what made them special. Stick to the mythology and very extreme political themes and focus on characters - even if it's a bit clichéd. The 2nd trilogy was very different from the OG and I think undermined a lot of those themes, but younger generations didn't care either. The new trilogy didn't really have a chance to play out as they pivoted too much based on fan reactions.

bkmeijer1 - 1/15/2024, 11:41 AM
I think they should just give Rey a show first to build up interest. Or maybe even make the movie the finale of the show. Episodes 1-6 on tv, 7 and 8 as a feature movie on the big screen

Dude, stop this 'multiple different directors' for each film in a trilogy. Find someone, or a team, that can first map out an outline and figure out where they want to go overall. THEN, focus solely on just the first film of the trilogy.
When that film finally gets to the theaters then focus on the 2nd.

I'm an idiot and even I can figure this out.
