STAR WARS: Kylo Ren Actor Adam Driver Reveals Whether He'll Return To The Franchise Ahead Of REY Movie

Adam Driver took centre stage in the Star Wars sequel trilogy but could he reprise his role as Kylo Ren in one of Lucasfilm's upcoming movies or TV shows? Well, the actor has now made his position clear...

Adam Driver did a masterful job as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact he had to deal with the conflicting creative visions of filmmakers J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson.

The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa appeared to fully embrace the Dark Side when he killed his father during The Force Awakens' final act. Johnson doubled down on that in The Last Jedi by making him the new Supreme Leader of the First Order following Snoke's demise...however, the writer and director also introduced the idea of there being romantic feelings between Kylo and Rey.

By the time The Rise of Skywalker arrived, Lucasfilm was desperate to please fans and, for Abrams, that meant sending Ben Solo out as a hero. He died after sacrificing himself to save Rey, sharing a kiss with his former foe in what proved to be an odd send-off for this trilogy's Darth Vader.

With Daisy Ridley set to make her return to this Galaxy Far, Far Away for a movie set 15 years after the Skywalker Saga's conclusion, there's been speculation that Driver's villain-turned-hero could somehow factor into the story.

Asked by the hosts of the Smartless podcast (via SFFGazette.com) whether he'll return as Kylo Ren, the actor responded, "They're doing stuff, but not with me. I'm not doing any more." When it was put to him this is because his character's story is done, Driver confirmed that to be the case.

While Driver's admittedly brief comments will disappoint some fans, it's not exactly hard to understand why he's looking to move on as a performer. It's always possible he's trying to throw fans off the scene, but like many of those sequel trilogy actors, it seems he's more than happy to bid farewell to the franchise.

Recently, Driver opened up on what proved to be an inconsistent stint in Star Wars for Kylo Ren. "I had an overall arc in mind that he wanted to do, which then changed," he revealed. "[Abrams'] idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader, where Vader starts the most confident, the most committed to the Dark Side."

"By the last movie he's the most vulnerable, and weak, and he wanted to start at the opposite, where this character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies would be most committed to the Dark Side."

We'll see what the future holds in store for Driver and Star Wars, particularly as we never expected to see Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, and Hayden Christensen, for example, reprise their respective roles after the prequel trilogy. However, they've all done so over the past couple of years, so you never know...

Man , if Ben had lived then a show or movie of him traveling around in space & trying to find redemption “Zuko Alone” style could have been cool imo.

He was probably my favorite character in the sequel trilogy so i wish we could get more stories with him but his redemption was the strongest part of the mediocrity that was TROS so I’m kinda cool with his ending aswell (besides the kiss which I didn’t like).

He should've been the big bad in 3. They ruined his character.

@BackwardGalaxy - I did like the idea of him starting out the most confused & vulnerable and commiting himself more & more to the Dark Side as the films went along.

The Duel of Fates still had its issues but it just sounded better on paper then how TROS.

I found Kylo Ren to be underwhelming. They need to create a more menacing villain.

They should have kept the original plan with Kylo Ren with him being evil til the bitter end but they [frick]ed him in Rise of Skywalker.

How is Kathleen Kennedy still not fired again? She must have some serious dirt on Disney execs lmao

@TheLobster -

The fact that she still runs Lucas film is a [frick]ing mystery and a tragedy.

She has a strangle hold on star wars and until she is gone star wars will suffer.

I can't even begin listing all the failures and cancelled projects she has oversaw.

It's pretty impressive.🤡

Even DCEU which is just as chaotic can atleast say when they screw up they can reboot.💁

That's something star wars can't do which makes her failures even more depressing. Just look at Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny. It's the biggest flop of the year. That's a travesty. The last Indy film goes out like a chump. Iconic IP reduced to a laughing stock.🥲

I know this year was the year of failures for Hollywood. Most blockbusters flopped this year but Indy flopping just doesn't sit right. It just doesn't😔....

God damn you Kathleen Kennedy.....

God damn you!!!!!!!!!!!

@TheLobster - She's clever. She saw the writing on the wall that Dave Filoni would probably end up replacing her, so she made up a new position just for him, where he gets to be the creative overseer and do the part of her job that everyone's always criticising (she gets final say though, of course).

3 Sh!tty movies. He was bad in them.

Oscar Isaacs & Ridley somewhat were the only good actors in the whole mess.

@DocSpock - Damn I found him to be the only competent one in the new trilogy. Ridley is wooden as a board and this might be the worst performance I’ve ever seen Issacs give.

That being said, I strongly dislike the prequel trilogy so what does my opinion on this subject mean anyway?

@mountainman -

I didn’t like the prequel trilogy. It bored me.

I hated the last trilogy. It sh!t on everything.

@DocSpock - When the prequels came out, I disliked Episodes I and II but mostly liked III. I’ve come to appreciate parts of the first 2, but still find them mostly to be bad movies. Overall, I’d say prequels > sequels though. The sequels have very little good going on, besides the visuals. I tend to dislike sequels where the former heroes have to be torn down to build up new ones. Top Gun Maverick did it well, where it didn’t have to tear down the old hero to build up the younger group.

Well put.

I have at least rewatched the prequels.

I won’t rewatch this last pile of crap. I did like Rogue One as much as I hated Solo.

@DocSpock - Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie outside the original trilogy. And it ain’t even close.

Also how were Abrams and Rian’s visions conflicting in the case of Kylo?.

Driver says that the original arc for his character was the opposite of Vader’s where he gets worse & worse by commiting himself to the Dark Side more with each film which is what happened in TFA & TLJ…

It wasn’t until TROS that Abrams seemingly just decided to change it and give him a redemption story.

Rian was just following that original arc.

I don't know about any of this. What I care about is WE GOT ROBBED AT THE END OF EPISODE 8 WITH the FIGHT BETWEEN KYLO AND LUKE. Really? Luke was a "force" Hologram. Total cop-out. That could have been one of the most epic saber fights ever.
Too bad the Mandalorian did Luke justice better than anyone around. There has never been a moment greater than the last episode of S2 EP8 in Mando. Such silky smoothness, using the force pushy thingy, plowin' down super-charged droids, and uniting with Grogu

Forget Kylo Ren!
Kybo Ren from the Droids cartoon is where it’s at

The sequels missed out on uniting the original three, and now it looks like we won't be getting the three Skywalker generations united either. Really wanted to see that, even if it was for one scene.

Let's try and forget the Disney trilogy ever happened.

mountainman
mountainman - 12/29/2023, 10:24 AM
@marvel72 - Yes. Any project that builds on Episodes 7-9 will have zero interest from me and many other fans.

If they are going to go into the future (which they should) they need a large time jump and to completely move on from Episodes 1-9, besides some historical references that the characters in that project can make.
