While female directors have told Star Wars stories on television, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be the first to helm one for the big screen. Now, the filmmaker opens up on that and her "very special" movie.

Lucasfilm shared plans for three new Star Wars movies during last April's Star Wars Celebration in London, leaving fans eager to learn more about what each of them will add to this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Whether it's James Mangold's prequel set during the "Dawn of the Jedi," Dave Filoni's rumoured "Heir to the Empire" adaptation, or Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey movie, fans - who haven't been able to watch a Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019's Rise of Skywalker - have plenty of be excited about. 

The Hollywood strikes ended up slowing things down, though we still anticipate cameras rolling on the Daisy Ridley-led project later this year. CNN (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with Obaid-Chinoy during its New Year's celebrations and asked the Ms. Marvel filmmaker about her Rey Skywalker plans. 

"I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special," she teased before addressing how it feels to be the first female director to helm their own Star Wars movie. "We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away."

Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins was supposed to be the first woman to direct a big screen Star Wars story, only for Rogue Squadron to fall apart due to rumoured creative differences. The pressure will now be on Obaid-Chinoy, particularly amid continued claims the franchise has become too "woke" (a joke in South Park has only given the franchise's detractors more ammunition).

The only confirmed details about this still-untitled Star Wars project are that it will be directed by Obaid-Chinoy and is set 15 years after the last events of the Skywalker Saga. We'll reunite with Rey and follow the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down. 

Last year, Ridley had this to say about her unexpected Star Wars return:

"I’m very excited. The story is really cool. I’m waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don’t have any other updates. It’s not what I expected, but I’m very excited."

"I know the storyline for one film. That’s not to say that that’s all it is, but that’s what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don’t know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited."

The untitled "New Jedi Order" movie is expected to be released on May 22, 2026.

@RedFury - I get that, but that's pretty irrelevant considering what women have already done.

Marcia Lucas was so involved with the original trilogy, literally the only one above her was George himself.

Kathleen Kennedy has been president of Lucasfilm for the entire time disney has owned it.

We've had female showrunners, which is basically the equivalent of director for a TV show.

Women have produced the films, edited the films, directed the shows, starred in every facet of the franchise.

This is just a weak attempt to get a "first" for this film since the quality will be nonexistent.

@Origame - What she's saying isn't irrelevant. I'm sure it's very relevant for her, and for other female directors in Hollywood. It's probably a very big deal to her that she gets to be the first woman to direct a star wars film. Whether the other female created content rocks, or sucks; she's still proud of the fact that she gets to be the first female director on a star wars film.

In a genre that's typically dominated by men, I can only imagine how good it must feel as a woman to get the opportunity she's getting.

So whether there has been women behind star wars or not, she is the first to direct a film. And that's a big moment for her. She'd very much allowed to proud about it.

@Origame - so you're saying that her being proud about heading a Star Wars film is somehow the reason that Star Wars hasn't been that great?

Feel free to have your opinion of the state of star wars, I won't argue with what you like and don't like about it. That's up to you.

But to say that her being proud of the job she got, and the direction she's excited to take it in is somehow an indication of the state star wars is in, is a strange claim.

I don't see how her being proud of her new job, and the excitement of being the first woman director of a star wars feature film has anything to do with all of the things you stated. She's just out there celebrating her accomplishment. And to me, that's awesome for her.

@supermanrex - as much as older fans don't like it, it's honestly best thar star wars caters to the younger generation. The older people become, the more jaded, and conservative (statistically speaking) they become. Focusing the prequels trilogy on newer fans hurt it at first, but it's paying dividends now. Because all of us who were young at the time that did enjoy it, can now relish in some of the content coming out now

I absolutely abhor the sequel trilogy though. I love Rey. Love rose. Love all the "progressive bits". (That's in quotations because to me, those bits were normal things. But to rural living red state fox news watching mouth breathers, it's considered too progressive to have multi cultural women in star wars). What i hate with the sequels is the terrible overall story and decisions. I'm not sure I'll ever come around

@Vigor - i respect until your opinion on the story or quality not being for you and your expectations. that's called normal constructive criticism. of which should lead to just awesome old school point and counterpoint discussions about what went wrong and what went right. but its not that way anymore. instead of applauding this lady for her achievement and all of us communally hoping for an awesome movie....here we are reading shitty comments and toxic memes about politics , racism, homophobia etc. blacks , lgbtq, women, etc will always have a home in a galaxy far far away in the story telling. what i wont stand for and not bit back on is the toxic people attacking the genre for being inclusive and diverse in showing maybe one of the most scientifically accurate portion of star wars. diversity in a galaxy full of trillions and trillions of beings.

The problem is Hollywood now is only doing race swaps for diversity check boxes. Which is where it's forced.

And even if it wasn't, and I hated all race swapping, that still doesn't make me racist. Because it being all applies universally. Mcu ancient one would also fall into that category. And I frequently use the example that I wouldn't want blade to be white.

@Origame - okay so while I don't believe that is the case, I'm going to go along for the sake of conversation.

So say that she was hired because of gender. Why do some assume that she brings absolutely nothing to the table of Star Wars, other than the check box? (Not trying to put words in your mouth here just to be clear.)

I would think that even though she is a woman, existing in a time where diversity is being pushed; that she is still likely a talented artist with a unique voice. Whether she was hired because she's a woman or not shouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things. What matters is if she is talented and creative enough to craft an excellent film.

I know alot of people have the stance of it shouldn't matter what gender the person is, they should just get the best person for the job. Well what if she's the best woman for the job? Every other Star Wars film has been directed by a man anyways. So why not switch things up and give her a shot? Maybe she'll bring something to the table we haven't seen before. Or maybe it'll fail, who knows.

It almost feels as if the only person they could have hired without backlash is a man that's directed a successful sci-fi before. Anyone outside of that seems to be a diversity hire to alot of people. I really wonder when isn't it a diversity hire within this context?
