All over the world, fans are flocking to cinemas to catch the newest entry in the Star Wars saga. There have already been reports of the movie breaking several box office records since it opened and grossed $14.1M in 12 foreign markets this Wednesday, and late Thursday evening it was reported that it would also be breaking the domestic Thursday night preview record. Today, another record seems to have fallen. According to

Star Wars: The Force Awakens have broken both the opening day and single-day box office records for UK and Ireland with an estimated earning of
£9.6M ($14.3M). Disney commented on the film's impressive UK box office performance where it opened at midnight:
"The film enjoyed not only the biggest opening day of all-time but also the biggest single day in U.K. industry history. Exhibitors continually added screens to accommodate demand which resulted in a total of 2 million booked tickets ahead of the release – breaking another record for advanced ticket bookings. There are still many available seats left in cinemas across the U.K. for fans who want to see the film during opening weekend. "
The previous records were held by
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 which grossed £9.5M ($14.2M) back in 2011.
Thirty years after defeating the Galactic Empire, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his allies face a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his army of Stormtroopers.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18.
