Music is one of the most important aspects of a movie no matter what the genre. If I ask you to think of some great movie theme music what instantly pops into mind.? Jaws. Star Wars. James Bond. the original Superman. Danny Elfman's Batman theme.

Not just that but think of all the great musical themes within Star Wars alone. Luke's theme (later renamed the Skywalker theme) which plays as Luke looks off into the dual sunset. Leia's theme which we first hear as she loads her message into R2D2. The Empire's theme. The Force theme. Not to mention the Cantina song or one of my all-time favorite pieces The Battle of Yavin.

Go to the 5:22 mark and tell me your heart doesn't start racing.

The score is so powerful it IS a character in the film. As important as the special effects, the cast, etc. Would we have loved Star Wars as much if it had a different score? No way.

It seems lately this has become something of a lost art. If I ask you to to hum Danny Elfman's Spider-man theme what do you come up with.? Go ahead. Try it.
The thing about Elfman's main theme is that it's always building. It builds and builds then switches to another part that builds and builds. It's really more of an overture.

Not that Elfman did a bad job by any means. I think he was perfectly suited for the task. Go back and watch Peter and Harry's fight in SM3. It's possibly the most exciting piece of music from the entire Raimi trilogy. But still.. I don't think Spidey got his theme.

The music in the current reboot of Spider-man is downright awful. The scene where Spidey fights the Lizard at the school was really exciting. Unfortunately the score sounded like it was meant to accompany a scene of a black stallion riding majestically across a beach.

When I was a kid I loved that old Spider-man cartoon. The one from the 60's. Yes, the animation is pretty awful but that show had the best soundtrack of about any show in the history of television. Who doesn't love that theme song and if you don't, what's wrong with you?

Not to mention the music in every episode was composed by greats such as Syd Dale and David Lindup. This music was so cool it even created a sub-genre of music known as 'Spidey-jazz." Personally I would love it if a new Spider-man movie sounded like this.

or go to the 6:55 mark and tell me if you don't think this would make a great Spidey theme..

There have been some great attempts at reclaiming the glory days of John Williams. Alan Silvestri did a pretty fine job on Captain America. But what's Thor's theme.? Or the Hulk's? Or Iron Man's? In Iron Man 3 they lifted bits of the Avengers' theme. That was pretty cool but I still don't think there's an identifiable theme for him and there should be.

Hans Zimmer did a great job on the Batman movies. I'd say that Batman does have a clear theme but it's more of a 2-note mood builder than it is a theme. It's a great 2-note mood builder, don't get me wrong. It's just not one that gets stuck in your head. The same can be said for the Joker's theme. It's just one note and it is absolutely terrifying but again.. not something you hum to yourself walking down the street. If you do that's kinda weird.

I'm not saying modern CBMs have to try to emulate only the work of John Williams. I don't see any reason a CBM couldn't do with some James Bond electric guitar or some Adam West-era Batman rockin' drums. More care needs to be put into crafting memorable music because really, we're living in a golden age of CBM's. And if there's one thing holding them back from being truly timeless it's identifiable theme songs.

So, how about somebody hire JG Thirlwell to score a Spider-man movie?

Yes, I most definitely can. Several, actually.

Mi1 - Re1 - Do1 - Si - Sol

Mi1 - La - Mi1!

How was that? Then there's the opening strings theme, which is awesome, there's the Goblin one, the Doc Ock one... Elfman did a bang up job that, it pains me to say, puts James Horner's to shame.

Sorry but Danny Elfman's Spider-Man is very iconic, very spider-like. Something which TASM struggled to compete with. It's just a long melody 'tis all.

Norton's Hulk had an ace score, which totally suited the military hunt vibe. Plus I can easily hum you Patrick Doyle's theme from Thor. Shame we won't be hearing it in T:TDW.

Carnage Man, Carnage Man, kills whatever Carnage can
Razor teeth, every size,
If he gets hold of you he will gut your insides
Look out here comes the Carnage Man

Is he strong? Listen bud, He's gonna drink your blood. Can he swing from a thread? Take a look there goes your head. Hey there! There goes the Carnage Man.

In the chill of the night, At the scene of the crime, his symbiote like a knife, they kill all the time!

Carnage Man, Carnage Man, Not so friendly neighborhood Carnage Man. Wealth and fame, he's ignored blood and guts is his reward. To him, your life is a great big bang up Wherever there's a neck to hang-up, You'll find the Carnage Man!

okay, in my defense I spent very little time on this.

I agree, nowadays we lack strong 'character themes'. The one that comes to mind is Jackmans' Magneto. The main song of the TASM score is terrible. In the leaked preview for TASM2 it has a little more energy (no annoying 'heroic' trumpets), so we'll have to see what happens with that movie. Spidey could use a soundtrack a little bit more modern and dynamic.

There were some scores in the movie that I really liked but the movie itself was another story. I think that man of steel had the best musical score of the year. I still listen to arcade. World war z and Oblivion have some good scores as well

If I may opine on this subject (and please forgive the long windedness)...I am a big collector of soundtracks. I prefer to listen to this genre of music more than any other genre. Now this doesn't make me an expert, nonetheless I will chime in with my viewpoint.

Composers nowadays aren't given enough time to come up with "great" themes for movies. (Although on occasion someone will have a stroke of inspiration and come up with something memorable.) But I think composers take on too much a workload and aren't given enough time by studios to flesh out the music that they do create.

Carter Burwell said it best when he was describing the process of creating music for movies, "I've only once gotten to the recording session with the feeling that the score was truly finished - that I wouldn't have changed anything if I'd had more time." Whether you are a fan of Burwell's music or not is beside the point...the point is that Burwell's remark is a telling response. Imagine what type of music we would get from these composers if they were given more time for inspiration.

But I understand the movie industry....time is money. The quicker they get a product out into the theatres the better chance of a profit. The downside is we often get mediocre soundtracks or we get soundtracks that were on the verge of greatness but fell short.

Since this new wave of superheroes movies has started I have yet to hear something that I find memorable. I think Danny Elfman's Batman soundtrack was the last superhero soundtrack that was fully satisfying to me. Ever since Elfman's Batman there are some soundtracks based on superheroes that have been enjoyable, but none have been memorable. I hope that studios give these composers a little more time to flesh out thier music and give us fans some truly great Superhero soundtracks. But of course this is just my opinion.

Spider-Man movies should have Bond like intros with cool title tracks.

Danny Elfman is right up there with John Williams for the greatest CBM theme ever. It still plays in my head. Horner however felt very out of place to me. His not so subtle score often distracted me while Elfman felt natural. Think of the school fight, Peter trying to talk down Connors should have been intense and moving but the music was all happy and cheery like Spidey was simply happily swinging around and having fun. The crane scene was awful enough without the theme from Titanic playing.

Han Zimmer is amazing and I think he'll do a better job than James did but, I doubt it'll be as memorable as Danny Elfman.

I vaguely remember Spider-Man's theme in Raimi's trilogy, but I do remember the ending themes when Spidey was swinging across the city. Those scenes and the score were epic. Too bad it wasn't in the third.

Iron Spider.. You're not wrong but that is essentially the Avengers theme. It's tweaked a little to be it's own thing though.
