Sony Releases Statement Amid SPIDER-MAN Backlash; Places Blame On Disney For Ending Partnership

Okay, so it looks like any hopes we may have had that this Spider-Man situation would be sorted out have now been dashed.

Sony Pictures (via THR) has now confirmed that Kevin Feige will no longer serve as a producer on the franchise, and hit back after receiving most of the blame for the dissolution of the partnership with Disney/Marvel. The studio says it is "disappointed," but vows to carry on the Spider-Man franchise without Marvel Studios’ involvement.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,”  said a Sony spokesperson. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”

The statement goes on to state that Feige may simply be too busy now after recently reacquiring the rights to Fox's stable of Marvel characters.

“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Of course, there's no mention of the initial report that the deal fell through because the studio heads were unable to agree on a financial arrangement to continue the collaboration, but Sony is definitely suggesting that Disney were the ones to pull the brakes on the partnership.

Hopefully we'll also hear from a Mouse House rep - or better yet, Feige himself - at some point.

Damage control in effect, too little too late ya dumbasses. The fact that this was the top trending story for almost the whole day goes to show how much people actually care, not just geeks like us lol. The fact the this would be a watered down Spidey if they move forward disappoints me, better make another new suit! Along with a list of other things that are off limits now smh

@bobevanz - @bobevanz - @bobevanz - I'm gonna get on my soap box since I'm first and say: as someone with a computer engineering degree I'm ashamed this site doesn't have an edit button and maybe pay for some more servers or get someone who can actually write code to fix the delay and overloads when like 50 people try to have a discussion. This shit is Jurassic Haha, and I say that with all the love in the world since I've been here since Almost the dawn of time lol. I wouldn't mind making you a new and improved one lol, I'd also add a photo/gif option so new users don't have to learn html to post a damn meme Haha. Cheers!

@bobevanz - I hate that Sony says Marvel doesn't own Spider-Man. They don't own the movie rights. But Marvel definitely owns "Spider-Man". The people at Sony probably don't realize that. God I hate that these mindless corporations are screwing everyone like this.

@bobevanz -

That's an incredible offer you're volunteering.

I hope this reaches the ears of the moderators.

I've gradually become more active on here, after lurking for the longest.

I spent some time wondering how everyone's been posting GIFs, photos/images, videos, memes but didn't want to announce it.

It's been fun making comments and joking around.

It would be nice if the 'Comments' UI evolved to be even more user-friendly for the uninitiated

Something doesn’t seem right on both sides of this.

If there's any truth to this, it's starting to make sense now. Feige tried to appoint a lieutenant to sherpa the Spider-Man franchise, Sony wanted one of their own, Feige said not in the MCU. Sony goes to the press.

Do we have permission to start blaming Sony now?

“We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”

Hmm... sneaky, but--

“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own."

OK, come on, this is bullshit. Don't even try with that.

Lol the people blamimg Disney when it's obvious they are getting greedy over something they don't own.

Spider-verse and Venom prove they don't "need" Disney to succeed.

Only a matter of time before it's announced Spidey is showing up in the Venom sequel.

I don't see how this current Spider-Man can continue without the MCU elements; No Stark tech, no MCU New York & references, suits without Tony's AI's which for was one of the best part of the character. It will be a different character, for me now, Spidey died in Endgame.

@febday - At least Far From Home ended in a way that lends to Spidey disappearing from the MCU.

It's easy to imagine he just retired and went into hiding after his identity was revealed.

Ha! ‘IP they do not own.’ Sony thinks they invented Spider-Man. All they have is a silly film licensing agreement. To quote a great businessman ‘Contracts are like hearts; they were meant to be broken.’ Having been a Spider-Man fan since I was a kid - and I’m 43 now - I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE DAY SPIDER-MAN’S FILM RIGHTS GO BACK TO MARVEL. SONY IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST COMPANY IN THE WORLD FOR KILLING A BELOVED CHILDHOOD FRANCHISE OF OURS. THEY DON’T OWN SPIDER-MAN. THEY DIDN’T INVENT SPIDER-MAN. FILM RIGHTS ARE NOT A RIGHT TO KILL A FRANCHISE. SONY WILL EF UP VENOM EVEN MORE AND ANY OTHER SPIDER CHARACTERS. PROTEST SONY!! GIVE SPIDEY BACK!! GIVE SPIDEY BACK!!! GIVE SPIDEY BACK!!! WHO’S WITH ME???!!!! LET’S GET THIS PROTEST PARTY STARTED!!!

THAT’S HOW DAD DID IT!
THAT’S HOW AMERICA DOES IT!!
AND ITS WORKED OUT PRETTY GOOD SO FAR!!!

I think we all dare them to reboot at this point. I don't think Tom Holland would want to keep going like this. Best case scenario for Sony [if he doesn't walk away] is that he phones it in.
