SPIDER-MAN May Not Be Done With The MCU Just Yet - Sony Pictures Provides An Update

Despite several trades appearing to confirm that Sony and Disney were unable to come to an agreement regarding Spider-Man, it looks like there might be still hope for the Webhead in The MCU after all...

Earlier tonight, we shared the disappointing news that Spider-Man would no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Sony Pictures and Disney failed to come to terms on a new financing deal - but all may not be lost just yet.

Despite the trades initially seeming pretty certain that the studios had already parted ways and Kevin Feige had exited from his position as a producer, many of them did update their reports to clarify that talks are still taking place.

Now, the plot has thickened yet again.

When io9 reached out to the studio, they were told that the "dispute is simply over a producer credit and negotiations are ongoing. They further clarified Feige has contributed to other Spider-centric movies that he did not receive a producer credit on."

Some believe this may simply be a case of Sony attempting a bit of damage control, as most fans seem to blame them - unfairly, we might add - for negotiations going south. We should find out soon enough, but if true, this could mean that there is still hope for Tom Holland's incarnation of Spidey in the MCU going forward.

What do you guys make of this whole situation? Drop us a comment down below.

Time will tell...

Either way - I think a lot of people don’t understand that Jon Watts and Tom Holland are still attached to Spider-Man.

We probably won’t get Happy Hogan, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, or references to Tony Stark. But that might be okay, too.

I don't know if it's that simple. Marvel Studios probably has some sort of claim on designs, story elements, and interpretations (and Holland's/Tomei's contracts may have elements that tie them to a Marvel Studios production). I'm not saying it's impossible for Sony to pick up the Holland franchise as-is, but it may require some significant retooling or face potential litigation (if Marvel/Disney are not happy about the split).

While I don't entirely empathize with Disney in this situation, Sony is just flat-out stupid if they think they can suddenly walk away from the MCU now. I do think it's unreasonable for Disney to ask for 50%, but it's flat-out insane that Sony expects them to be happy with 5%, especially after Kevin Feige helped revitalize a franchise that Sony buried.

@santoanderson - I'll preface this comment by saying that I have no idea about the ins and outs of running a movie studio, but I don't see why Marvel don't just keep the deal as is until Tom Holland's contract expires. I know that 5% of profits doesn't sound like much but Marvel do take 100% of profits for any movie related merchandise so I'm guessing that would generate them millions. Sony pays for the movie, Marvel have creative freedom and the use Spidey in the MCU and take the money from the merch. Sounds like a win / win to me?

@santoanderson -

Disney also wants to share the production costs 50/50 which could mean that Sony, which holds all the cinematographic rights to the Spider-man franchise and therefore has the last word on everything, would share their rights with Marvel Studios and lose their full control over the Spider-man franchise by compromising a lot. It could also mean that the distribution rights, which Sony completely holds right now and which are their main interest in their deal with Disney so far, could be shared by the two companies, allowing Disney to have their word to say on the distribution of the movies with very probably the intention to put the Spider-man movies with the rest of the MCU movies on Disney + without having to negociate with Sony.

Fan-bashing aside, Sony is completely in their rights here. They hold the rights to the Spider-man franchise movies, not Disney, it was a deal built on mutual interests and they have absolutely nothing to gain by accepting a deal which would deprive them of much of what they currently own and have paid for.

My question is how did this all get public? Background troubles like this dont happen to often with Marvel but Sony is not at all surprising.....I take it back I answered my own question.

I certainly hope so. If not it creates a huge gaping hole in the MCU films going forward. Aswell as the Spider-Man franchise.

I don't know how they would be able to write around all of a sudden not being able to reference all of the people so important to Spiderman in the MCU.

The Amazing Spider-Man franchise died of natural causes. MCU Spider-Man was murdered

Sony, let Disney take the wheel. Disney, let Sony take the money. It's worked before, so don't revert back to the Stone Ages where Spidey can't play with the other Marvel characters.

We didn't come this far to get the Fantastic 4 back, just so Peter CAN'T banter with Johnny Storm.

Make a deal for the fans.

I've gone through the first emotional stage of thinking about how much this sucks, but at the same time I can remember when Sony would never let Spidey in the MCU, the X-Men/FF would never leave Fox and James Gunn was never coming back, so I'm keeping the optimism light on

Sony watched their stocks drop immediately following the news, plus the enormous wave of negativity directed at them on social media and said to themselves "Tell Disney we need them to help us unfck ourselves once again."

Unfairly? It's not like Marvel studios expects Sony to pay for everything, and get 50% back. Marvel and Sony would be splitting the costs as well.

Look if it's true, then that's part of negotiating. You put your price out, they counter it. We dont know all the truths yet, but Sony has to realize they made the money that they did because of the MCU. Make a deal damnit.

And also, Marvel was in trouble decades ago, and sold character film rights to avoid bankruptcy. Now here we are, Sony was in trouble financially, and Marvel saved their asses. Clearly it's time for a new deal to be laid out.

As I have stated before....give it a week they will come to a deal. Both sides are playing chicken etc...

That being said MCU fans could not make it as a DC Fan........we have all gone through the 12 stages and also had to grow some thick skin. This is the norm to us LOL!

@MarvellousPORG - Ouch you sound so salty and angry...that is one of stages you are experiencing. And I feel so violated by you attacking me out of the blue for a second time time today.

I am confused...."most mcu fans are fans of dc. We just don't accent garbage films like you because of a logo" that is the most confusing yet hilarious statement ever. So I guess some of my favorite movies like IM, Thor, CapAmerica, WS, Avengers and Dr. Strange are garbage? Just curious.

1.) Thor Love and Thunder
2.) Eternals
3.) Doctor Strange 2
4.) Hawkeye

Everything else is “meh we’ll see for now.” Can’t wait for Thor with Waititi back.
