I'm not necessarily talking about villains either. In fact, there's a long list of supporting characters who are nowhere to be seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they need to show up in the 2019 sequel!
So, what you'll find here then is a look at the eight characters we most want to see show up in the wall-crawler's corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a few years from now. Some of these names you might expect, but there are a few here which you'll likely be surprised to see mentioned. However, they would all go a long way in making Spidey's solo adventures in the MCU even more spectacular...
8. J. Jonah Jameson
I still can't quite believe we got two movies in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise with no sign of J. Jonah Jameson and The Daily Bugle (beyond a few Easter Eggs), but the fact that Marvel Studios is also leaving him on the shelf for the reboot is genuinely shocking. To be fair though, this may be part of Peter Parker's world which is best left for a sequel, especially as it will take a fair bit of screentime to reintroduce Jonah and the fact that the young hero makes money taking photographs of himself in action as Spider-Man.
Marvel may very well modernise that by making him an intern or something similar - would a newspaper really buy paparazzi shots from a teenager in 2016? - but Peter's relationship with Jonah and the people who surround him needs to be explored on the big screen, as does the fact that the Bugle paints Spidey as a menace.
7. Miles Morales
Now, I know that most of you are probably thinking that Miles Morales shouldn't show up until Tom Holland's tenure as Peter Parker comes to an end, but it could be a lot of fun to see these two in live-action sooner rather than later. Regardless of whether or not Miles has powers when we first meet him, Marvel and Sony could use the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel to set the stage for these two to team-up down the line, and even more importantly, give the Miles version of Spidey his very own movie.
There's a reason so many people were campaigning for him to be in the suit when it was first revealed that Marvel were rebooting Spider-Man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the thought of him being relegated to that upcoming animated movie is massively disappointing. There's enough room in this world for another Spider-Man!
6. Jean DeWolff
Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man touched on Peter Parker's relationship with Captain Stacy, but none of the wall-crawler's movies have really delved into how the hero is viewed by the NYPD. Seeing Tony Stark serve as a mentor and ally to Spidey in Homecoming promises to be a great deal of fun, but the sequel needs to take a more grounded approach to his adventures by giving him an ally on the force.
Jean DeWolff is the perfect choice for that role, and while bringing in Sin-Eater this soon would do her a disservice, that's a storyline which could easily be explored somewhere down the line. Having the police turn on Spider-Man because of Jonah and The Daily Bugle could also work, with Jean serving as his only ally as the teenager looks for help where he can after Iron Man is - possibly - taken off the board thanks to Avengers: Infinity War!
5. Norman Osborn
With so much of the spotlight put on the Osborn family in the past FIVE Spider-Man movies, I get why neither Harry nor Norman are anywhere to be seen in Homecoming. However, by the time the sequel is released, it will have been five years since The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and more than enough time will have passed for stormin' Norman to make his return.
Personally, I would like to see him appear already as the Green Goblin ruling over New York City's underworld as an urban legend of sorts. That would avoid the need for another origin story and as Spidey squares off with the costumed criminal, things between them could get increasingly more personal before their relationship finally resembles that of their comic book counterparts. However, Norman is someone who needs to be kept around for the long haul, possibly appearing in other MCU movies as well!
4. Betty Brant
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Liz Allan will be the girl Peter Parker has set his sights on, though it's possible that he'll have fallen for Zendaya's mysterious character by the time the credits roll. Either way, rather than bringing in another version of Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson in the sequel, making Betty Brant the hero's new love interest would be a much more interesting option in the follow-up.
Their relationship is a lot different to the wall-crawler's other girlfriends, and that gives Marvel and Sony the opportunity to explore something fresh here that we haven't seen on the big screen before. If Betty is a fellow high school student/aspiring reporter, that could add an interesting new dynamic to Peter's adventures as he uses her connections at The Daily Bugle to help him take on whichever villain appears in the planned sequel.
3. Captain America
It makes perfect sense that Spidey will team up with Iron Man in his upcoming solo outing following the events of Captain America: Civil War, but assuming that we're getting a revolving door of Avengers in the wall-crawler's movies moving forward, Steve Rogers needs to be next. They've only shared a few seconds of screentime so far, but it was awesome, and there's a lot Marvel could do with the relationship between these two.
Ultimately, this one boils down to whether or not Cap survives the events of Avengers: Infinity War, but these two have to cross paths again there, and that could help set the stage for a team up as the star spangled hero offers the young Peter Parker some advice on how best to take on the villains he faces. After all, while Tony can provide Spider-Man with the tech, it's Captain America who can teach the youngster how to fight.
2. Daredevil
When it comes to dream teams fans want to see on the big screen, Spider-Man and Daredevil standing side by side is high up on the list. It's a pairing which makes sense given the fact that they're both street level vigilantes, but this one can only happen if Kevin Feige and company finally give in to what the people want by bringing the Netflix heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a meaningful way (and that means having them show up in a movie).
Even if it's just for a few seconds, Daredevil helping Spider-Man could be a lot of fun, especially if the Man Without Fear has some stern advice for the new young superhero making his presence felt throughout Hell's Kitchen and the rest of New York City. As cameos go, Sony could do worse than having Netflix's most popular character showing up in their Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, that's for sure.
1. Uncle Ben
It's understandable that Marvel and Sony are skipping Peter Parker's origin story in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it would be no bad thing if he were to appear in flashbacks in the sequel. Spidey's past may be well-known to fans and non-fans alike, but his relationship with Uncle Ben is extremely important and deserves more than just a few casual mentions in his movie next year.
Without going down a similar route to Spider-Man 3 by making one of the hero's villains Ben's killer, perhaps the sequel could tie the story into these glimpses to the past, while it would also be no bad thing for us to see how he got these powers in the first place! Either way, an actor being cast to utter the iconic "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" line is a must, especially as The Amazing Spider-Man movies made the mistake of never actually touching on that.
