Drew Goddard Explains Why He's Not Directing Marvel's SPIDER-MAN Reboot

Given that he was set to direct Sony's now-cancelled Sinister Six spin-off, many people naturally assumed Drew Goddard would helm Marvel's Spider-Man reboot.

Drew Goddard's had a lot of back luck when it's come to comic book adaptations. For a while there, he looked set to direct the now defunct Sinister Six movie for Sony. In order to do that, he was forced to abandon his role as the showrunner of Netflix' Daredevil series. Following the Sony spin-off's cancellation, all signs seemed to suggest Goddard would helm the MCU's Spider-Man reboot. The talented writer/director explained to Cinema Blend why that never panned out either.

"I mean, I think that’s more a question for them, but here’s the good news. I’ve worked with Marvel a lot. The way that Marvel sort of works is they say, ‘Hey, do you have an idea for… Here’s the movies we’re thinking about making…’ They sort of tell you the world what they’re thinking of making, and they sort of put out there, if you have an idea for any of these, come talk to us."

"And I think, with Spider-Man, I didn’t really have an idea. Part of that might have just been because I had just written one. I spent a year working on Sinister Six, and I think I was like in a head space where I just didn’t… you know, it’s very hard to say, ‘Ok, now write a new movie.’ So, it never got that far. We never, it never got taken that far. They know how much respect I have for them. They’ve been very nice to me over the years, and I know sooner or later, we’re going to find the right project. It’s all about timing."

In hindsight, his comments make a lot of sense. Imagine working tirelessly on a movie for a year, only to then be told to go back to the drawing board again? It's a shame Goddard never really got the chance to leave his mark on either Spider-Man or Daredevil (although he did write the first two episodes of the latter series). Would you like to see him return to the MCU at some point down the line? If so, which character(s) would you like him to tackle?

Marvel's Untitled Spider-Man Reboot is being directed by Jon Watts, and hits theatres
July 28, 2017. You can check out Drew Goddard's latest work in The Martian on October 2. The Ridley Scott-helmed film (which was written Goddard) is currently earning rave reviews at Toronto.

So Sinister Six is canceled right?

If so...

At least Sinister Six isn't seeing the light of day anytime soon.

The Sinister Six spin-off is cancelled for the Amazing films.

I bet though that Sony has one for the MCU Spidey waiting in the dusty cabinet.

I feel for the guy. The way he describes it sounds brutal. That would suck.

I'm just glad he's still executive producing Daredevil. He wrote two great episodes for season one with episodes 1 and 2.

DeKnight said Goddard's influence was great with season one. Glad he still has an overseeing presence with the show. People forget, he created Daredevil for netflix. Now that sinister six is defunct, I expect his presence to be stronger with season 2 as he kind of left halfway into season one to work on sinister 6.

@dethpillow - "if u go this every movie has to be a $700 million Success!!! model going on, there's no room to mess around. and i look to his clinging on to Edgar Wright for so long as speaking to something about Feige that really wants to mess around and try out different things.

i think that's what makes me real hopeful about the new supposed set up."

Agreed. Great point.

And I think it shows Feige's human side too, if that makes sense. Feige knew Edgar Wright spent approx. 15 years trying to get his Ant-Man movie made and the passion/investment Wright had for the project. Respect to Feige for sticking with him. Sure, it helps Wright is such a talented writer/director, but Feige could've cut ties with Wright sooner and given them more time to replace him. Or at least that's how I see.

Forced to leave? Ha! Dude ditched daredevil first chance he got. He offered to have a meeting with Amy Pascal about Sinister Six in his Daredevil office. It's no surprise he wasn't asked

@0megaDaGr0dd - "That really sucks. I trust Marvel to not [frick] up Spider Man and the reboot sounds like it's headed in the right direction by skipping the origin, but it just doesn't get much better than Drew Goddard. The first two episodes of DD are brilliant,. Glad to hear they went after him initially"

An interesting take away or silver lining is despite Goddard leaving Daredevil and turning down Spider-Man, it sounds like he's still on good terms with Disney/Marvel so there's a definite possibility he could work with them again in the future.

And I think the same applies with Edgar Wright too. They parted ways on Ant-Man amicably, so he could work with them again in the future too.

@0megaDaGro0dd

but it just doesn't get much better than Drew Goddard

Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Yea that sounds like fancasting but given how they are writing an animated Spidey film, I don't see how you couldn't throw their name in the hat for MCU Spidey.

I still won't get why Adam McKay isn't writing the Spidey reboot.

Wrote some of the best comedies of our time like Anchorman...
Wrote Ant-Man...
Comic book fan...

I mean I'm not asking for him to direct but he would be better than the dumb and dumber writing crew currently writing the Spidey reboot.

I would love for the Sinister Six script to leak.

Just like the Spider-man 4 script to be leaked.

And the Venom script from the Zombieland writers.

LET THESE DAMN SCRIPTS LEAK, YOU'RE DOING NOTHING WITH THEM.

I trust Marvel and Co to deliver us a great Spidey film, but the thing is two years away... I'm more excited about Marvel's next outing

@0megaDaGr0dd

Don't get me wrong I love both guys and agree completely but just feel that if you were to give the Miller/Lord, they would do wonders but if I had to pick I mean I'd probably go Lord/Miller only because we've never truly had a funny Spidey on screen. I don't say that in a bad way. Tobey had a few good one liners but never really gave zingers like Spidey does. Andrew's Spidey constantly gave off jokes and I never felt any of them were funny. I remember Webb saying he met with comedians in writing Spidey jokes for the film. Wonder what comedians he was with.

But I feel with Goddard, he would just nail the villains. From the design to the characterization, he would just nail them. That's something you need in a Spidey writer. Someone who can write his villains strong. I mean Spidey is up there with Batman has having the best rogues in comics and if you can't write Spidey's rogues well then the film will fall flat. It's one thing Raimi did well. His Green Goblin and Doc Ock was perfect. I really liked Sandman's direction and Harry Goblin. Venom well... My feelings on him is Raimi did him more justice then the comics gave his origin but that's a topic for another day.

I feel like when you look at it, we've had great villains with Spidey but I just would sort of be more interested in Lord/Miller's take which is weird since I'm always pro-villain and about wanting villains to be written better on screen. It's also so strange since I feel that Lord/Miller would nail Spidey more but Goddard would nail the villains more so it all depends which is more important.

At the end of the day, I would be completely find with Lord/Miller or Goddard doing a MCU Spidey film. I wouldn't have a single complaint about either one. Both would do Spidey justice.

Can we just fire the current writers and get Lord/Miller or Goddard to write the film? Hell have Lord/Miller and Goddard writing the film.

It'll be hard to differentiate Maximus from Loki as he is Loki pretty much. I would really focus on his insanity and play on that. Where as LokI is a victim of hubris and delusions of grandeur, Maximus is crazy. His mind is a powerful but fractured weapon. He's like a sadistic superpowered hannibal lecter. He often preys on the citizens of Attilan and there fears and weaknesses.

as big of a cashgrab sinister six seemed to be, I was really excited for it mainly for him, the dude wrote the best episodes of the last season of buffy, one of which had me weeping like a child. Hopefully he does something else, because I think Daredevil proved that the writing staff from buffy(drew, steven deknight, douglas petrie) are all very talented writers, it would be dumb to not use his talent, that is like skipping over James for Guardians in my opinion. In other words, it could be a missed opportunity if him and Marvel never work together.

I read Omega's Inhumans comment and got sad because that's probably how it will be on screen, and it's not what I want to see

Then I read @ComicsBornAndBred @dethpillow 's comments and got happy because that's what I wish we would see on screen

And I feel like Iwan Rheon would be perfect for the role

He's a great director, if Spider-man 2017 bombs he should take over the sequel.
