SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Director Jon Watts Hasn't Signed Up To Helm The Sequel... Yet

Spider-Man: Homecoming has been met with universal acclaim and with box office analysts predicting a huge opening weekend for the reboot, common sense says Marvel and Sony will be bringing back director Jon Watts. However, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker has confirmed that nothing is official in regards to returning and that he's not signed on for the sequel...yet.

"For me it’s one movie at a time," he revealed. "I can’t wait to see [Avengers] Infinity War because I know what they’re doing but I don’t know the specifics. I feel like with Tom and with Spider-Man in this Marvel universe we’re just scratching the surface of what we can do." Chances are Watts is negotiating in public for a pay rise and that he'll more than likely return for Spidey's next adventure.

Tom Holland, on the other hand, seems far more confident about the director making his return for the 2019 release. "[Watts] is coming back for the next one," he insisted. "We can’t do another Spider-Man movie without Jon Watts." We'll just have to wait and see but considering the fact Spider-Man: Homecoming is a bona fide critical and commercial hit, Marvel would be wise to turn to Watts again!

If Watts doesn't return, imagine if they got Tobey Maguire to direct the next one? He's directing Blood on Snow, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and has been in the industry since he was like 10. Sure, the dude doesn't need to work anymore, but that'd be pretty epic I think, getting Spidey to direct Spidey starring the new Spidey.

It'd be like if Kenneth Branagh played Thor in the 90s before going on to direct the movie. Actually, on that line, Branagh could've made a pretty good Thor if he had bulked up a bit.

I remember when people were shitting on Watts. I thought to myself, "you idiots never learn, just wait for the movie to come out and then judge because you'll look awfully stupid if he does a good job and then you end up demanding he come back for a sequel". Same thing happened with Russos: let's give him a shot to make the film, now people love the russos so much that they'll shit on Joss, who is still a great writer and director. Not everyone is guilty of this, but certainly too many users fell into this category.

@ScarletWarlock - Russos directed Arrested Development and Community. Two of arguably one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. So I knew we were and still are in good hands, lol.

He'll probably end up doing it. Why wouldn't he?

I hope they address the whole Uncle Ben situation more and explore the inherent tragedy of Spider-Man in the next one. It's really the only thing I was kinda left missing from the movie, although I really loved it.

I was excited for the movie, but what held me back from being TRULY excited was a bit of Spidey fatigue (at least until Civil War), the marketing wasn't particularly raising my hype levels, I wasn't crazy about the movie being written by the guys who did Burt Wonderstone and Vacation, and I wasn't even crazy about Cop Car all that much (I thought it was just OK). But having seen the movie now, Watts nailed it. As a matter of fact, I don't even really know why I worried about him in the first place, because Marvel knows how to pick people who might not have the best track record, but they seem to have the best take on the characters and the material. So they really should bring Watts back.

He'll be back. If they kept Webb for those terrible TASM movies, they should keep Watts.
