Well, it's official. Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Homecoming is the biggest superhero movie of the year, surpassing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.4M), with a worldwide collection of $874 million.
The Jon Watts-directed blockbuster, which stars Tom Holland, has now firmly established itself as the second-highest grossing Spider-Man film ever (without inflation and 3D). However, despite that impressive milestone, the film is not expected to surpass the $890.9 million haul of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, although I probably wouldn't bet against it at this point. Additionally, Homecoming is also the fifth-highest grossing film in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, behind The Avengers ($1.5B), Avengers: Age Of Ultron ($1.4B), Iron Man 3 ($1.2B), and Captain America: Civil War ($1.15B).
Overall, Homecoming has overtaken Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($868.1M) to become the eighth-highest grossing superhero movie ever.
As for the weekend box office, 20th Century Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle is expected to win the weekend with a $39 million domestic debut. Internationally, its also on track to finish first with $61.2 million from 55 overseas territories, which means it should comfortably cross $100.2 million worldwide by the end of the day.
Warner Bros. and New Line's monster hit It finished second in its third frame, bringing in another $30 million this weekend, raising its domestic total to $266.3 million and its worldwide sum to well past $478 million. Warner Bros.' The Lego Ninjago Movie, in a third place finish, disappointed with $21.2 million domestic, $31.7 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Lionsgate's American Assassin took in $6.25 million in its second frame, bringing its worldwide total to $32.3 million.
