By all accounts, Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming is a monumental hit, having already crossed over $144 million domestic, $283.79 million worldwide after opening just last week. With a spectacular start like that, a $1 billion final gross is certainly in the realm of possibility, but based on a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it looks like the film's billion-dollar dreams may have just taken a pretty major hit.
According to THR, Spider-Man: Homecoming has yet to receive an official release date in China, which seemingly suggests that the country has reinstated their strict summer blackout rules, meaning it's now looking increasingly unlikely the Jon Watts-directed feature opens in the Middle Kingdom until at least August. This move might also just be the biggest difference maker in the film's potential billion-dollar run as China has previously proven to be quite fruitful for Spidey films, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which grossed over $94 million there back in 2014.
Other films that are being delayed include Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes, Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, which isn't expected to open in China until September. Also, with the lack of an iconic character on the same caliber as Spidey, it can be reasonably assumed that these three films may be more significantly impacted by this delayed cash flow from the world's second largest box office.
