The Music for the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Is Trash, So I Recut It

Hey everyone, I can't be the only one who saw the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, got a big grin on their face and thought, "Oh yeah, Marvel done did it again." Then I thought about the music choice...

As a kid from New York City, Peter Parker would not listen to MGMT. People in Connecticut probably don't listen to MGMT. Nobody listens to MGMT now, nobody listened to them when they were popular in 2007. It was that ONE song they had that was big and that was it. There were plenty of better bands to choose songs from for this trailer, but the went with MGMT. However, my point rests is that if the movie is selling itself on Spider-Man, it should sell itself on something Spider-Man would actually listen to. A kid from Queens, New York City, Spider-Man is a product from the 60s and as such, in the 60s, I'd expect him to listen to The Dubs or the Blues Project. This Spider-Man is what, fifteen, sixteen? Born in 1999 or 2000? Yeah, he's not going to listen to MGMT and the movie shouldn't sell itself off of him listening to it either.

This Spider-Man, from Queens, New York City, is going to be listening to Nas. Why Nas? Spider-Man is a classy guy. He's intelligent, he listens to intelligent music. He's going to listen to rap, but he's not going to listen to Trey "Mr. Steal Your Girl and Slap that Phat Ass" Songz rap. He's going to listen to rap that is poetry, rap that actually teaches lessons. Rap that is only rap because in any other form it would be beautiful R&B and Jazz. Rap, which if originally published in written form would be the greatest modern poetry. That is what Peter Parker would be listening to. He'd go Reasonable Doubt over Watch the Throne, Illmatic over Take Care. So, I recut the trailer and set it to probably the greatest hip hop song of all time: NY State of Mind.

I set it to NY State of Mind because it's representative of everything Spider-Man is. He's the guardian of New York, he watches the crimes and then he hops in and saves the day. Think of the line "Beyond the Walls of Intelligence life is defined, when I think of crime I'm in a New York State of Mind". Does that one line not speak more Spider-Man to you than the entire MGMT discography? The MGMT song speaks high school, sure, but Spider-Man, even in high school, is more than where he goes to study. He's about how he uses what he has learned, the relationships he has with his family, his friends, his wife/girlfriend and why he protects the city of New York. It's funny because Sony is signed to Nas - the greatest hip hop artist and modern poet of our generation. Instead of getting him to work on a project about Spider-Man, a project which generally makes full use of its NYC setting - they have him making clothes for Ghostbusters movies.

If you guys liked my recut trailer, please let me know in the comments below. Like, share and subscribe I'd appreciate it. However, I'd also like to know your thoughts on what music you guys think would work best in the trailer. Do you agree with me about Nas? Do you disagree with me about MGMT? What would you rather hear instead? Let's discuss.

I loved the song choice in the original trailer. In fact, it's gotten me hooked on the song lately. I believe that Peter is more likely to be listening to a rock song from 2007 than a rap song from 1994. Time to Pretend has nearly three times as many listens on Spotify than NY Sate of Mind, so maybe it isn't as irrelevant as you think. I appreciate the dedication that you put into making your video, but I think it is coming more from your own appreciation of Nas than it is from you thinking that it would be an actual fit for Spider-Man.

@JamesPunn - Thank you for your feedback, I apologize if I may have offended you by making fun of MGMT - I just don't like them and I shouldn't impose that view on others. However, I chose NY State of Mind because Peter Parker is a kid from Queens whose given an extraordinary talent which will allow him to define life outside the walls of intelligence, just like Nas did with his poetry. I feel that it works very well, but maybe I should give Time to Pretend another shot - I probably still won't like it because... MGMT, but... who knows.

@CutlockCrew - I get where you're coming from and enjoyed the video. I just don't feel like this fits Peters vibe. The rap that's poetry I get 100% but I can't imagine Pete bumping this through beats headphones walking down the street. Honestly, I imagine Pete barely listens to music at all, and I'm a musician lol. If anything, I think it would be what he grew up with from his aunt and uncle, which is probably classic rock and pop. Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Elton John, and such. But hey, everyone has their own opinion. Nice work on the video man.

No I like it, I also thought MGMT was an odd choice. An acid-drenched pop tune found on every college freshman's dormant MySpace page, right next to Tay Zonday and Dramatic Chipmunk? I get that they wanted the lyrics to synch up with the images, a bit of a miscalculation, I think, but it's all subjective. The main problem the trailer encounters because of that song is the jarring tonal shift when Vulture shows up at the midway point, again, that might've been an intentional choice and might reflect what goes on in the movie, but had they ignored all the corporate, marketing people who said "Every trailer has a popular song in it nowadays! Put a popular song in it or risk standing out from the crowd!" it would've been a much more memorable and rewatchable trailer. Nothing comes to mind as far as a song recommendation that would've fit the Spider-Man tone better, but I'll keep you posted.

This article though... LOL. Why can't every article be written like this?
