A Key Actor In SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Has Not Recorded Any Dialogue Yet

Not only is the animation on the Spider-Verse trilogy's last film reportedly running behind schedule, but it also seems like the voice acting is lagging behind.

While it's well known that the release date of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse may be later than most fans would like it sounds like the film could be even further off than anticipated.

Actor Jake Johnson, who voices Peter B. Parker, said that he hasn't yet recorded any dialogue for the highly anticipated third installment during a recent podcast interview.

One of the most widely followed conventions in animation filmmaking is that the audio comes first, followed by the animation. Before the animation is completed, voice performers will record their lines, providing animators with vital timing and emotional cues.

It is typical to have only preliminary sketches or storyboards accessible while recording, allowing for flexibility and improvisation based on the actor's performance. This method ensures that the animation corresponds closely to the language flow and character expressions. Disney Animation and Pixar films, for example, record dialogue first.

Here's Johnson's response when asked what he's completed on the film [via CinemaBlend].

"Nothing. Well, I will say, I can’t say anything about (the release date), but I will say with recording of actors, things can go fast. So, my not recording truly means nothing. If you find out the animators hadn’t started animating, then that’s a different thing. But there’s Really no breaking news from a voiceover actor. Even if we try to break it. If they wanted to… like I did a movie for Wildwood Studios. I might be saying that wrong. If I am, I feel embarrassed. But I recorded my entire role in one day."

Johnson is likely referencing his role in the upcoming Laika Studios (Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings) stop-motion animated pic, Wildwood.

Alternatively, studios will sometimes hire amateur voice actors to record dialogue to give to the animators to use as a reference. This is called "scratch." Utilizing this method, the real voice actors are then able to record their lines after the animation is complete.

However, a big-budget film like Beyond the Spider-Verse is unlikely to use this strategy. It's difficult to conceive a production of this size employing animators to work off of anything other than what the actual voice cast has recorded.

Though Peter B. Parker takes a back seat in Across the Spider-Verse, the cliffhanger ending suggests that he'll be back in a bigger role in Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Recently, Phil Lord and Chris Miller promised to deliver a satisfying conclusion for fans while walking the red carpet at this year's Golden Globes awards ceremony.

An animated spin-off series centered on Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen and Issa Rae's Jessica Drew has already been confirmed to be in development at Sony, and there's already talk of a live-action version of the Spider-Verse movie.

Unfortunately, there is still no confirmed release date for Beyond the Spider-Verse. Current estimates suggest it might not arrive until late-2025, though this remains speculative.

It's going to take another two years for animation, worthless article

@bobevanz - worth the wait if the film is as good as the previous two

@lazlodaytona - The first is better than the second.

I'm a Peter Parker Spider-Man fan and he wasn't in the sequel enough.

Miles Morales is Miles Morales not my Spider-Man.

I’m not a fan of story arc cliff hangers that end movies and have no real conclusions but to lead into the next movie and make you wait more than a couple of years for the next installment.
I liked the second Spiderverse movie but the end was poopy.

@slickrickdesigns - same here. It's just another movie that suffers from Part 1 syndrome.

The only movie that didn't really had that was M:I 7, but other than that every Part 1 from last year ended on a cliffhanger.

@slickrickdesigns - It's sort of like when you start a series on Netflix or the other streaming services, but it came out a few years before you watched. You binge like 3 seasons, get caught up, and then learn the 4th season is over a year away. Every time I lose interest. By the time the new season arrives I either don't care anymore or don't remember a thing about the previous seasons.

@bkmeijer1 - MI:7, while maybe not as good as the 5th or 6th installments, did wrap up a Part 1 better than any other example I can think of.

@mountainman - yeah. There's still the threat of the AI, but atleast the good guy team has the key (literally) to defeat it. Normally it's the bad guys being at an advantage in the cliffhanger (like Fast X), so this is a nice change

@mountainman - I think they should have ended on the actual cliffhanger they had at the end of the movie. With the literal hanging off of a literal cliff. The fact that it ended so gently was weak.

Infinty War is still the GOAT of movie cliffhangers and the box office for Endgame proved it.
(BTTF II comes a close second, Empire comes third)

ASTV was inbetween the two. It wasn't an OMGINEEDTHATMOVIENOW moment like Infinity War and it wasn't an 'okay I guess there's gonna be another' like MI:7.

It had excitement, but excitement that could wait a couple of years.

I thought they did okay, tbh. Felt like a regular comic book cliffhanger.

@ObserverIO - Infinity War is probably the best movie cliffhanger in my personal opinion. Even though I had a very good feeling of what they would do to end it, that still had a ton of impact.

They can take as much time as they want.

I loved both movies, no need to rush the third one and disappoint. It takes time to do a great movie, and it's even longer when it's animated.

@Usernametaken - no need to rush at all indeed. Sony is already releasing three Marvel movies this year, so they can wait until next year to fill up their Marvel slate then

I just wish studios would stop using the skip-frame animation style such as these and Turtles used. It triggers a type of seizure for me and I’m unable to watch even the trailers anymore. :(
