Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has been highly praised by fans and received so much recognition that it's up for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars tonight.

As popular as the critically acclaimed Spidey adventure proved to be, you may not be aware that the movie made history by using groundbreaking animation technology in order to bring those beautiful scenes to the screen.

In an interview with CBC Kids News, Art Director Patrick O'Keefe explained that they "couldn’t just rely on 3-D animation. We needed to rely on some of the old-school 2-D animation hand-drawn techniques."

Take a look at the image below. O'Keefe said that in order to design scenes like these - where half is in and half is out of focus - the team had to find entirely new ways to ensure that the colors would layer and look like a comic book.

He also said that he believes the film resonates with so many people because it is told from the point of view of a kid. Plus, he's just as surprised about the Academy Award nomination. "He's just a regular kid who's trying to discover himself. I could not have imagined being a part of anything this big."

What do you think? Make sure to watch The Oscars later tonight to see the fate of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and check out the trailer for the movie below!
