The amazing success of Sony Pictures' Spider-Verse movies meant other Spidey-based animated projects were always likely to materialize at some point, and a new rumor is claiming that two new animated features are currently in development.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, a movie focusing on a number of the Webhead's many villains and a mysterious "female-led" project are in the works.

Details are sparse, but the female Spidey film is said to be separate to the previously-announced Spider-Woman film. A Gwen Stacy Spider-Verse spin-off is one possibility, and we couldn't resist using Aunt May for the banner given those supposedly accurate reports that Sony was planning a spin-off featuring Peter Parker's beloved aunt prior to Spider-Man: Homecoming (it's highly unlikely... but it would be funny).

As for the villains, Spider-Man has one of the most varied and impressive line-ups of rogues in the Marvel Comics pantheon, so this definitely has a lot of potential. Whether they'd be bad guys we met in the Spider-Verse movies or not remains to be seen.

Sony's live-action "SSU" got off to a strong start with the Venom movies, but Morbius underperformed and the recent Madame Web proved to be an outright critical and commercial disaster, so it wouldn't exactly be a massive surprise if the studio decided to switch focus to their animated output.

The studio reportedly had high hopes for Madame Web, and already had ideas for a direct sequel and spin-offs featuring the main characters. The current mood on the Sony lot is said to be "gloomy," and with good reason. Despite previous reports placing the movie's budget at around $80 million, it's actually believed to be closer to "the low $100 million range."

In addition to Kraven the Hunter, a third Venom movie slated for Nov. 8, 2024. These movies could well prove to be box office successes and turn things around, but if not, one has to assume that the SSU will be on its last legs.

What do you make of these animated movie rumors? Drop us a comment down below.

"After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders. He must soon redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most."

Beyond the Spider-Verse will feature returning voice actors Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Brian Tyree Henry as Jeff Morales, Luna Lauren Velez as Rio Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara, Jason Schwartzman as Spot, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, and Daniel Kaluuya, as Hobie Brown.

If true then definitely seems like they are pouring more money into their animation side now which is good since it’s certainly doing and is better quality wise imo then their live action cb content.

Idk about doing films for villains (for some it MIGHT work) but I would rather we get stories about the other Spider-people…

Instead of that live action series , give me a Spider Man Noir animated movie!!.

I've seen the future: Kraven the Hunter will not be a success and Venom 3 will make less than Let there be Carnage.

Sony will only make Spiderman 4 in 2026 with Marvel and focus on animation in the future.

@MarvelZombie616 - I mean they will have to continue the relationship with MCU or reboot Spidey after that. Deal only works if they're making live action films

@MarvelZombie616 -
Eh... Disney/MCU wanted Kraven for Spider-man 4 so they might have reworked Kraven during the delays to incorporate set-up for Kraven's Last Hunt, such as including Tom Holland's Spider-man (Entirely CGI) as set-up for Spider-man 4.

If Venom 3 keeps its original plot of Eddie babysitting a young Peter Parker, then yeah, it'll likely perform worse than Venom 2. That said, Sony have kept some of the plot under wraps and I could easily see them putting in a variant of Spider-man (Andrew Garfield) in the third act in order to have a Venom & Spider-man team-up at the end against an opponent.

Personally I'm more interested in seeing Sony eventually do their Sinister Six movie than I am for any upcoming MCU project.

Yeah Gwen makes the most sense, but it is Sony so they could have the most out of touch idea in mind.

The Spider-Verse movies have a strong storytelling element, as well as the ability to bring in numerous other Spider-people. Sony trying to replicate that success, won't be easy.

Go nuts with the animated stuff.

But keep every single bit of it away from the live action MCU.

@Feralwookiee - what are you insinuating? Seems like a good deal. Bailey goes back to producing individual films for Disney which he hasn't done in decades, and Greenbaum runs a fully merged Fox/Disney live action studio. Am I missing something?

It’s fu$king Sony…of course it will be an Aunt May animated feature. Followed by a movie based on the ghost of Uncle Ben which will basically be a knockoff of Ghost.

I’d rather them stick to animated, because starting from TASM2, every live-action film they’ve made without Marvel Studios has been hot garbage.

Instead of saving Sony, Lord and Miller should do Secret Wars.

I think it is Sydney Sweeney and Isabela Merced spider-women who’ve gone rogue and evil. They of course will be lesbians and must fight and defeat the male spider-men
