MADAME WEB Spoilers: Here's How The Movie References SPIDER-MAN And The Wider Spider-Verse

With Madame Web now playing in theaters, we're taking a deep dive into how the movie references Spider-Man and the wider Spider-Verse! Unfortunately, the team-up is definitely lacking major Easter Eggs...

Heading into Madame Web, it's fair to say most of us expected some sort of link to Spider-Man. The title character has long had connections to the Multiverse, with the Julia Carpenter version of the character a central figure in Peter Parker's exploration of the Spider-Verse.

Trailers and set photos didn't feature any nods to the web-slinger; in contrast, Morbius once directly referenced Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and The Daily Bugle, Easter Eggs which ended up on the cutting room floor when all was said and done.

In the weeks leading up to Madame Web's release, the word "standalone" repeatedly came up. That may have been to temper expectations, but the movie still features a couple of big nods to Spidey.

The biggest is the fact that Cassie Webb works as a paramedic alongside Ben Parker. His sister-in-law, Mary, is pregnant and her husband, Richard, is away working.

Cassie attends a baby shower for Mary and, during the movie's final act - which sees Ezekiel Sims in hot pursuit of Cassie, Julia, Mattie, and Anya - Ben rushes her to the hospital where she gives birth to a little boy who, for some reason, is never named.

That's ultimately it for direct Spider-Man references. Using her powers to see the future, Cassie enters a psychic arena called "The Web," a possible nod to the Web of Life and Destiny; however, it's never really explored beyond a surface level and doesn't appear to be Multiversal in nature.

Finally, there are the spider-people in South America who gain their powers from spiders, one of which is stolen by Ezekiel when he kills Cassie's mom. While the comics have hinted that Peter's powers have ties to magic, it's widely accepted that it only granted him amazing abilities because it was imbued with radioactivity.

"Well, I think I concentrated on the fact it was called Madame Web and I was very excited about the fact we had a really strong, brilliant female superhero at the fore," director SJ Clarkson told us when we asked about the lack of Spider-Man in the movie. "What I was most excited about was the clairvoyance and the fact that hadn’t been done before."

"There have been many versions of many superheroes and those particular skills, but hers I think deserved its own story to be told."

You can watch the full interview with her, and Ezekiel actor Tahar Rahim, in the players below.

Meanwhile, in another universe...In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

How do these writers and directors/producers not know that connections to other characters in a certain verse is what us nerds love? Movies like this show that hollywood in general is very disconnected from the rest of us people on planet earth.

@lazlodaytona - they sabotaged themselves in the first place, should have just done spiderman 4 with tobey and built the universe around him.

@lazlodaytona - To be fair, I think the common movie goer is starting to get tired of that stuff. They don’t want to have to watch other stuff to fully enjoy a thing. That said, I think Madame Web in particular is a terrible choice for that. Her entire nature depends on referencing other characters.

@lazlodaytona -

Dylan Baker - Lizard
Bruce Campbell - Mysterio
John Malkovish - Vulture
Gerald Butler - Kraven

They already had the best cast for the roles that we had to wait ten years for, they had it all and just threw it all away lol

@lazlodaytona - Same with Halo S2. The fact that the rare parts when Master Chief is being Master Chief are really cool and improved from S1 makes me even more angry over how much they kept fcking up everything else.

So, they made this just to keep the rights. Otherwise I fail to see how the one character with a multiversal gimmick doesn't use it in her own movie.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 2/14/2024, 10:40 AM
@Spidey91 - I don’t think keeping the rights was part of it? They just have to make Spider-Man movies every few years, characters in his wider universe aren’t needed for that.

"Cassie Webb works as a paramedic alongside Ben Parker. His sister, Mary, is pregnant and her husband, Richard, is away working."

But their child would take his father's name... which isn't Parker. If Ben is MARY's brother instead of Richard's, Parker would be her *maiden* name.

@CerealKiller1 @newhire13 - Huh, yep. I copied and pasted the quote directly, so it must have changed afterwards. Wikipedia confirms sister-in-law, so at least Sony didn’t screw THAT up!

There has too be an alteria motive for these sh*t movies. All the people involved can't be that stupid.
EarlChai
EarlChai - 2/14/2024, 10:17 AM
@MarvelousMarty - Most casual moviegoers don't understand that this isn't an MCU movie. It seems pretty obvious that Sony's trying to cash in on that confusion, but what are the chances they're trying to ruin the brand's reputation on purpose? Kill the biggest blockbuster series there is so that Rothman's niche Oscar-bait will get more box office?
BillyBatson1000
BillyBatson1000 - 2/14/2024, 10:22 AM
@EarlChai - I think you're onto something. Marvel will need to pay Sony to STOP making movies. WE will then need to PAY Marvel and Warner Bros to stop making movies ...
Spoken
Spoken - 2/14/2024, 10:23 AM
@EarlChai - Fifth-teen maybe ten years ago I would agree, but this is 2023, meaning people gain information quicker than before. So I don't the "confusion" part is true. More like Sony is confused since they though Morbius was justifiable to be re-released after it became a meme, expecting it to get more money.

I agree on "ruin the brand's reputation on purpose". Maybe devaluing the brand to sell to Marvel later down the line. Rothman I feel though is a problem that no one is ever going to address unless you remember the X-Men debacle after Bryan Singer left X3. Everything went ALLLLLL DOWN hill with a lot of their blockbuster movies. Even Rothman never wanted Deadpool, and only wanted it to be re-written to be a PG-13 film.

@MarvelousMarty - I also thougt people involved in making a movie/series can't be all stupid - then I started watching S2 of Halo... So yeah... people involved CAN be that stupid.

@Spoken - Hell, I mean, even actors & actresses are confused, everybody who gets hired by Sony always rings someone up to ask what's it like doing these comic book movies & it's pretty much always someone who has starred in a Marvel Studios / MCU flick, so when they say they had a great time, they then sign on for a Sony CBM. So I'd say there are still those regular folk who just see the word Marvel & think they're all linked still rather than knowing Sony still releases Marvel IP.
EarlChai
EarlChai - 2/20/2024, 9:57 AM
@Spoken - Lol, no worries. Didn’t figure you were still living in last year. 😉

I suspect our perspectives are skewed, being as deep into this stuff as people who literally visit ComicBookMovieDotCom on a regular basis are. I meet plenty of everyday people who don’t know the difference between DC and Marvel characters, let alone Marvel Studios and Sony’s Licensed Marvel Spin-offs. Even my own family members, who I’ve explained the difference to more than once, get confused when I say Venom and Morbius aren’t in the MCU. The Marvel Studios logo changed in 2016 to try and help the “Studios” part stand out, but it seems casuals just see Marvel and assume it’s the same thing.
