MADAME WEB Star Dakota Johnson Turned To Elizabeth Olsen For Advice...Thinking She Was Joining The MCU?

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson has revealed that she turned to MCU veteran Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Endgame) for advice on joining a Marvel movie...but did the actress confuse that world with the SUMC?

There's a suspicion among comic book fans that Sony Pictures is allowing the actors they hire to think they're joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've seen actors cast in what's been called Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters tag Marvel Studios in social posts so there's definitely confusion there.

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson was one of them and, in an interview with L'Officiel USA, she recalled turning to MCU veteran Elizabeth Olsen for advice. She plays the Scarlet Witch for Marvel Studios, most recently appearing in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

"When I got the Madame Web role, I ran into Lizzie Olsen in the hotel lobby and spoke to her about it for a bit, and that was helpful," Johnson explains. "She said she had a great time and...seemed very relaxed about it, so that was comforting."

What Johnson might have missed is the fact Olsen had "a great time" working with Marvel Studios, not Sony Pictures. In fact, the Madame Web lead isn't the only one to have made this mistake.

Doing the rounds to promote Morbius in 2022, Matt Smith recalled turning to his Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan (who plays Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) and asking for her advice on joining the Marvel Universe.

"I phoned Karen and said, 'What's it like? Have you had a nice time?' and she's like, 'Yeah, go for it, do it'. So I did," he said at the time. "Good old Kaz. I mean, she's a seasoned pro, she's made about 9 of them." Again, that's nine MCU movies, not nine set in the SUMC!

So far, that slate has consisted of Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, and the upcoming Madame Web. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse fall under the Sony Pictures banner, albeit Sony Pictures Animation.

You can check out our interview with Madame Web director SJ Clarkson in the player below.

Meanwhile, in another universe...In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

Madame Web arrives in cinemas on February 14.

Im more open into supporting this. Sony is not fooling me into watching it. They know this is Morbius levels of bad.

Unlike Marvel where they implement misleading marketing to fool the fanatics.

@vectorsigma - Misleading marketing?... Lol. Man the reaching and stretching to talk shit about the MCU is getting worse and worse. We're now at a point where trying to prop up Sony despite being commercially awful is a tactic.

@Variant - yeah, Marvel uses false advertising/misleading marketing all the time. No stretch there, bub.

MCU has been a trainwreck for a while.

@ImBatman4realz - Show me an example of misleading marketing. And no, Hulk being in the trailer for Infinity War is not that. That's something other studios do too so they keep the actual film fresh for the audience. Bub.

@Variant - you must have missed the Echo marketing

@Variant @ImBatman4realz - tv-ma for echo with pg levels of blood. "Good" trailer for secret invasion and echo that i saw a lot of "this has winter soldier vibes, will be good" comments, Capt marvel as a "must see" for endgame. Where have you been?

Wouldn’t be surprised if Sony does give these actors that impression.

That being said, it’s up to an individual to understand the employment contract they are signing. Shouldn’t an Actor know the difference between Sony and Disney?

MotherGooseUPus - 2/9/2024, 7:57 AM
@mountainman - you would think so but lets be honest, most actors/actresses arent the brightest bulb, and they def dont read the contract they sign... theyre agent or manager should do that for them.

Taonrey - 2/9/2024, 8:06 AM
@mountainman - if not the actor then their agents should at least know lol the difference between a Disney and Sony distributed film
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/9/2024, 8:14 AM
@mountainman - imagine the actors not knowing the difference. What more the general audiece?

Marvel is in a very bad position if the ga consider this as part of the mcu and might hurt dp3 numbers more which comes after this film
mountainman
mountainman - 2/9/2024, 8:22 AM
@vectorsigma - Sony does this intentionally because they think it’ll increase demand for their projects. Since Venom, they have tried to make it appear that these are in the MCU. And it probably is hurting the MCU’s brand to an extent.

@mountainman - You know she has an agency and a team right? And that team has lawyers who read all this. She has a team because she trusts them to do what's right for her. Like do you really think Dakota strolled into the Sony lot alone and excitedly signed a contract and thought "gawrsh I sure hope this all works out!"
BlueTheRaptor
BlueTheRaptor - 2/9/2024, 2:44 PM
@SATW42 - She dropped her agency after this I believe. All makes sense now! She thought she was joining the MCU based on what her agency told her because of course they want a big cut of that Sony money. Then she had to do this shitty movie lol

Maybe she was just talking to other people who did CBMs... and does it even matter? It's not like Dakota is this big name actress that only doe top gigs, she is literally best known for a softcore porn franchise.

@Urubrodi - Besides 50 Shades of Grey, has she had any other hits? I’ve never seen her in anything.

@mountainman - Not that I know of.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 2/9/2024, 7:58 AM
@Urubrodi @mountainman - she had a tiny tiny role in "Need for speed" a guilty pleasure movie of mine... but she barely had any lines, which i think is good for her, haha
mountainman
mountainman - 2/9/2024, 8:20 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - I’m sure I’ll watch that one eventually. But I wouldn’t expect me to start appreciating this actress who has the acting range of a turnip.
Nolanite
Nolanite - 2/9/2024, 8:52 AM
@mountainman - a very beautiful and well breasted turnip
mountainman
mountainman - 2/9/2024, 8:58 AM
@Nolanite - Sure she’s attractive. Let’s see how many people she brings to the theatre. Tracking looks lower than Morbius 😳
SATW42
SATW42 - 2/9/2024, 9:31 AM
@Urubrodi - Yeah, I mentioned this too. It's entirely possible she just wanted advice on being in a comic book movie and not "HEY LIZZIE WER'E LIKE SISTER NOW RIGHT!?!"
Origame
Origame - 2/9/2024, 7:55 AM
Jesus christ. It's so obvious she's talking about marvel movies as in movies based on marvel comics. Ffs. It shouldn't be this hard to make madame web look bad that you need to stretch this hard.

I’ll wait til this movie is on one of my streaming apps that I pay for lol. Not going to the theaters to see this garbage.

This is hilarious.

But also a prime example that the GA don't really care about universe specificity. They just don't bother to think that way. Marvel is Marvel.

I can't wait until hack Josh Wilding had a daily article on why this failed, top ten lists on why this failed, and other click bait articles on why this failed. Meanwhile his punk ass stayed mum when The Marvels was crashing and burning.

@IronMan616 - reminder that his article after Indiana jones' disastrous opening weekend was titled "the flash is still a flop, and Indiana Jones 5 had a disappointing opening" 🤣
Nolanite
Nolanite - 2/9/2024, 8:55 AM
@IronMan616 - you do prove a good point there. Luckily for us, we pushed the notion of the marvels flopping so hard, that he eventually caved in.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/9/2024, 9:00 AM
@Origame - I’d say at a production cost to box office ratio, Indy 5 was the biggest disaster of 2023.
Itwasme
Itwasme - 2/9/2024, 9:09 AM
@mountainman - didn't think Indie was all that bad. It captured enough of the old feel to have done well, so I'm surprised it did so poorly. It wasn't great mind you, but it was Indie.
ImBatman4realz
ImBatman4realz - 2/9/2024, 9:16 AM
@IronMan616 - straight up! It’s even more pathetic if/when you watch his interview that he posted at the bottom with SJ Clarkson where he talks about being a fan of the franchise and how he enjoyed the movie…

One of his questions was “why doesn’t she have lenses on her costume?” 🙄 Dude’s insufferable
Origame
Origame - 2/9/2024, 9:31 AM
@mountainman - I really didn't even realize indy 5 had such a huge budget. Where did that money go, all into plopping Harrison ford's head on the stunt doubles body for half the runtime?
