MADAME WEB Star Dakota Johnson Would "Definitely" Return For A Sequel - SPOILERS

Though a sequel is far from guaranteed, Madame Web star Dakota Johnson says she would me more than willing to reprise her role as Cassandra Webb if Sony Pictures asked her to...

Sony Pictures' latest SSU movie, Madame Web, is now in theaters, and although reviews have not been great (to put it mildly), box office prospects are... also pretty lousy, actually.

The Spider-Man spin-off is expected to take in just $25 million over a six day period, which obviously doesn't bode well anything close to a successful theatrical run, and makes the possibility of a direct sequel highly unlikely.

Even so, should the studio decide to make another Madame Web (or bring the characters back for  a crossover), star Dakota Johnson says she'd be more than willing to reprise her lead role.

"If they want me to come back then I definitely will," Johnson tells Total Film. "I have no idea what's in store."

Spoilers follow from this point on.

Towards the end of the movie, Cassie discovers that the villainous Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) was working in the Amazon with her mom when she was researching spiders right before she died, and travels to the Peruvian jungle where a Las Arañas' elder helps to unlock her abilities.

After returning to New York, Cassie, Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O'Connor), and Anya (Isabela Merced) manage to defeat Ezekiel, but Webb is blinded and paralyzed in the process, bringing her a lot closer to her comic book counterpart.

The movie ends with the girls moving in with Cassie, who now moves around in a high-tech chair. There's no post-credits scene, but there door is certainly left open for a follow-up.

Sony also has a third Venom movie slated for Nov. 8, 2024, and Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, coming on Aug. 30, 2024. El Muerto, which was set to star Bad Bunny, has reportedly been dropped from the schedule.

"'Meanwhile, in another universe...'" reads the official synopsis, "In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines." "The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present."

S.J. Clarkson, who also helmed Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders, directs from a script by Matt Sazama, Kerem Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Adam Merims executive produced.

@WhatIfRickJames - This is a Sony mess, not Marvel´s. Marvel has nothing to do with Madame Web.

@Moriakum - at the end of the day, Marvel is the the title card at the front of the movie. Marvel Studios seems to me, to be playing defense by releasing projects in their upcoming slate.

I'm all for it. MW = X-Men articles.

What did you think?

I think it looks way better than I thought. I was afraid it looked too 3D, it doesn't really.

@braunermegda - a few things i noticed

- mouth is just randomly moving during dialogs
- that gambit staff animation is poor
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 10:30 AM
@Fogs - It looks off by modern standards, but I actually like that it somewhat resembles the weird perspectives of the original. It’s just a cleaned up version of the OG animation style.

And that updated theme is 🔥
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 10:31 AM
@vectorsigma - What If is smooth but it feels flat. I really hate modern animation that tries too hard to simulate live action. I prefer this over what if.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/15/2024, 10:40 AM
@mountainman - to each his own i guess.

If they are targeting nostalgia, the least they can do is just work with the old style. The clean look here is distracting and the motion is too unsmooth that it's like those animation style of powerpuff girls. Looks cheap and made with little effort

And they debut that "Marvel Animation" logo with this quality, not good for me.

I just hope the writing is decent which i have low expectations on
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 10:43 AM
@vectorsigma - I agree that there are low expectations for writing, as with anything Marvel related these days.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/15/2024, 10:48 AM
@mountainman - ill get back into rewatching the old series and see if my eyes will adjust and see the good things here

I started reviewing those when this was first announced. But with all those delays and we start to learn about the creatives, my hype dimished little by little. I still havent started s2.

@Fogs - what we really want a sequel too.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 11:12 AM
@vectorsigma - In my opinion, seasons 2-4 were the best part of that show. So many iconic moments. It’s been a few years since i’ve watched it through, but i’ll put on a random episode or two on occasion.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/15/2024, 11:17 AM
@mountainman - same here, those are the best seasons for me too. The last season was too episodic for my taste and the animation went bad
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 11:26 AM
@vectorsigma - They outsourced the animation to the Philippines in S5 to save money. It looked terrible. I never minded the good one off episodes. In S5, I liked the 2 part Phalanx Covenant and the one with Captain America and Wolverine. But there were some bad ones too.

But yeah so much to love. I hope this show continues adapting the Claremont and Lee eras. Give us some X-Tinction Agenda, Mutant Massacre, Age of Apocalypse, etc.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 2/15/2024, 11:33 AM
@mountainman - oh, didnt remember that the pjalax episodes were s5. I guess the last few ones are the ones that sucked from my memory. And i vaguely remember liking that cap and wolverine episode.

This was actually my hope when this was first announced - that they will adapt other major arcs in the comics and not just another what if episodic fest.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 11:40 AM
@vectorsigma - The one where Jubilee reads stories to the Morkock children was such an abomination. The Mr Sinister origin story wasn’t anywhere near as cool as it should have been. I am not the biggest fan of the series finale. Certainly the weakest season.

Even though season 1 isn’t as good as 2-4, it’s still solid and has multiple amazing episodes and the over arching Sentinels storyline.
Fogs
Fogs - 2/15/2024, 12:29 PM
@vectorsigma @MarkCassidy - Really? I thought it was OK. I understand they wouldn't go back to frame by frame animation, and had to update it.

@braunermegda @mountainman - Agreed! I really thought it would look terrible, it looks visually OK to me. It was kind of a neat trick they did with the reduced framerates.

@MMFRESHSW2 @mynameisn0body - Well that's a different problem. I don't know if it will have a good script or not. I love and respect the story-wise craft in the OG series, so it's hard for this one to come even close.

Hey! Let's talk about foreign policies. Or where stork-babies come from. Or your first fight in elementary school.

Oh, and my dog's name is Cindy.
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 10:33 AM
@lazlodaytona - My first fight in elementary school was against this annoying kid named JJ. He was mad because a girl he liked was more interested in me. No real fists thrown. More of a wrestling situation. But I was bigger so I pinned him pretty quick before it got broken up.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 2/15/2024, 10:52 AM
@mountainman - dude. you're almost saying my exact story. I don't remember his name, but in 6th grade I asked his girlfriend to be mine (not knowing she was 'taken' :D ) and she said yes. For the next week he chased me on the playground trying to throw me down, which he couldn't. Finally on day 5 he came at me, I grabbed his shoulders, and about flipped him over me while he went sprawling. That was the end of that. The girl dumped me the next day because she told me, "I don't like fighting." What a b1tch :D
mountainman
mountainman - 2/15/2024, 11:10 AM
@lazlodaytona - I’ve only been in 2 fights in my life. This one in 5th grade, and another in 10th where this dude had been bullying me for weeks and I had finally had enough and punched him in the face. I got suspended for 3 days but he and his friends never gave me issues after that.
Fogs
Fogs - 2/15/2024, 12:32 PM
@mountainman - Same thing happened to me in the 8th year, and for the same reason (new girl more interested in me). Dude even was my friend, came after me like a bull in the break and all I had to do was to get out of the way, and shove his face against a corridor wall. That ended the problem. 🤣
