Despite numerous set photos and supposed plot leaks doing the rounds online, there's still a lot of secrecy surrounding Sony Pictures' Madame Web movie, and no official announcement has been made about the Marvel Comics characters that'll be introduced in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off.

We do know that Dakota Johnson is playing a version of the title character, however, and co-star Sydney Sweeney's role has now finally been confirmed.

Though previous reports have indicated as much, a new piece by Vanity Fair has made it official. The Euphoria alum will make her debut as Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman.

“I was freaking out, of course,” Sweeney recalls. “I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character. I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be. Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”

Sweeney then admitted that she hopes to have an expanded role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line, before coyly hinting that a potential stand-alone Spider-Woman movie might be on the cards (whether this is the project currently being developed by Olivia Wilde remains to be seen).

In the comics, Carpenter became the second Madame Web after the original, Cassandra Webb, was killed by Sarah and Ana Kravinoff. She did ultimately take up the mantle of Spider-Woman, we don't know for sure if Sweeney will actually suit-up in this film.

Madame Web also stars Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Adam Scott, Emma Roberts and Tahar Rahim. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) directed from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

The movie was recently pushed back to February 16, 2024.

There are plenty of other X-Men villains that deserve their time in the sun, but if the MCU insists on going back to the well for Mystique, I'd love to see Freedom Force. Let's get a roster starring Mystique, Destiny, Rogue, Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, and Spider-Woman. Bonus points if we can set up Spiral + the Mojoverse.

Sydney Sweeny Spider-Woman (if Sony somehow crosses over) would certainly put eyes on screens!

@TheRose - Spiral and Mojo (Longshot and Shatterstar would be nice too) would make for a really unique X-Men project.

@mountainman - It was honestly the plot I was hoping that Deadpool 3 was gonna explore the Mojoverse. IMO, it's the perfect villain to break that 4th wall just as effectively as Wade Wilson. Cassandra Nova is already a controversial character, but she would have been much more suited to "Mutants on Krakoa/Genosha" story.

Shatterstar is a good shoutout, but I've honestly never cared for the guy. Any comic recommendations?

Now, give me Longshot and the Exiles hopping through the the Mojoverse and moving from Television Show to Television Show....that could be fun.

@TheRose - Mojo would have been good for Deadpool since he is so ridiculous.

I was honestly hoping for Brolin as Stryfe and have a crazy time hopping adventure with Wolverine.

We will see if what we get is up to snuff.

Honestly Shatterstar has a cooler design than any of his story or character stuff has ever been. I primarily know him from early 90’s X-Force.

This is a bit of a miscast! She should be Black Cat!

@Forthas - Hmm, she definitely has that femme fatale look about her. Especially in the picture for this article.

Exactly! I think a better choice and maybe even better actress is:

Maika Monroe

Julia Carpenter

She better have her Spider Suit, otherwise I’ll reject the concept of spider woman wearing sweats and a skull cap.

I love how every actor thinks saying they went to an actual comic shop and bought everything with their character makes them genuinely think they are scoring points with comic folk.

It's cute. I mean, it's not a bad thing for her to do... It's just, we aren't that easily manipulated because we are infact a very cynical and critical faction. We see that surface level effort and aren't impressed.

I just wonder, is someone coaching them to say this shit, or do all casual non comic fans genuinely think we are that stupid?

I have SO much more respect for the few folks who are blunt like “id never heard of the character, but the pitch was good and the script was fun, and once I did some research on the character, I actually really connected with them."

That gets my respect every time. But this whole “i went straight to the first comic book store I could find and bought a stack and read everything!" Responses..... Idk maybe it's just me, I hate them.

Ah no. Sorry but This will not happen. Her only acting skills are removing her clothes. Not enough to carry a feature film.

I honestly can't wait for these Spider-Man-less Spider-Man spinoffs to stop being made. When people talk about comic book movies oversaturating the market, this shit is way more responsible for it than the mcu is, with its profound mediocrity & lack of originality.
