SPIDER-MAN 4 Director Update; Villain Rumored To Be A Character We Haven't Seen In Live-Action Yet

We have a couple of updates on Sony Pictures' plans for a fourth solo Spider-Man movie, which is rumored to feature the debut of a villain we haven't seen adapted in live-action yet...

Though Sony Pictures is most likely (we still don't have an official announcement) in the process of developing a fourth Spider-Man movie, it's said to be in the very early planning stages, and is not expected to enter production until 2025.

Even so, rumors have begun to swirl online, and a recent report claimed that Drew Goddard is being eyed to take over directing duties from Jon Watts.

In his latest newsletter, Jeff Sneider notes that finding a director for the movie is a top priority for the studios (no surprise there), but he's heard that Goddard will not be the man for the gig.

Tom Holland and Zendaya will almost certainly return as Peter Parker and MJ, but the former is believed to be "growing wary" of playing the iconic hero, so this could be his final time in the red and blue suit.

During a recent interview, the actor said he feels that he's become too used to the "safety blanket of Spider-Man."

"I want to do things that scare me, things that make me uncomfortable. When you do what we do, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. This show is a perfect example of that. Ben is consistently telling me, if you don’t commit, they won’t believe you. The reason I wasn’t committing is because I was afraid. I’ve never done anything like this before. I got so used to the Marvel machine and the safety blanket of Spider-Man, feeling like I was protected. So, doing something like this was incredibly scary, but because it was so scary, it was so fulfilling and so rewarding. Going forward, if there’s something that I feel like I can’t do, I want to do that one. Playing a sort of stupid English doofus is not what I want to do because that’s my life, right?"

The script is being written by No Way Home scribes Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, but we still know very little about the story, including which of the Wall-Crawler's fearsome foes will be causing problems for Peter and co. Most of Spidey's major bad guys have already been utilized in previous films (Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, etc), but according to The Cosmic Circus, the still untitled sequel will feature a villain we haven't seen in live-action yet.

Spider-Man has a huge roster of enemies to choose from, including some lesser-known but still very popular characters such as Mr. Negative, Tombstone and Hobgoblin.

Who would you most like to see face-ff with Spidey in his next movie? Drop us a comment down below.

Can't post an article debunking a rumor if there's no rumor in the first place.

If true , I hope we get a more street level villain in this like Mr Negative or Tombstone…

The latter could be fun if they go with the “Big Man of Crime” angle we got in Spectacular Spider Man.

Basically a mob boss type could be fun and a change of pace from from the previous villains Peter has faced in this universe so far.

@TheVisionary25 -

Good call, Tombstone or Hammerhead would both be great picks.

@DrReedRichards - Have a feeling Sony hold rights to Tombstone and Hammerhead (own full or part rights to over 900 characters from Marvel comics) which if so is a good reason to use them in a Spider-man film if they can't be in other non-Sony involved MCU projects before they try and use them for villain centric Sony films, lol.

Time for a new actor.

Someone needs to tell Tom Holland that Spider-Man is the only thing working for him, as without it, his career will likely be over.

@Th3Batman - At this stage more likely to bring in someone like Jessica Drew (which Disney hold more of the rights to) than a recast, that or Miles, but nothing wrong with Holland as Peter. Just time to have a more mature version in regards to the scripts now he is no longer in High School and after the events of his prior appearances in the MCU. It isn't like recast is ever a guarantee of better even if have issue with who is currently in a given role.

Goddard, Civil War at street level and this scene...

Now that the Avengers don't remember Peter, it's time for Spider-Man to be in a "lower league." The Punisher and Defenders

Mr. Negative would be interesting, just finished Spider-Man 2 on PS5, and his arc was awesome. Hobgoblin, Prowler, Scorpion, Spider-Slayer or Tombstone would also be good choices and keep t grounded. Though, with a piece of the Venom symbiote left at the end of the last movie, a Scream making an appearance in video games, she could be a good choice also.

Wasn't the "main" rumor that Kingpin would become mayor and be the main villain of the movie, hence the team up with Daredevil?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/20/2024, 1:40 PM
@Urubrodi - That does not on it's own contradict this as we will have other villains working for Kingpin appear I would assume. Either other mob boss types under Kingpin or hired hitmen and/or Supervillains seem likely.

Hopefully we get Kingpin with a few lower level villains. Scorpion would probably fit well, as would Tombstone or Hammerhead.

Drew Goddard directing an MCU Spider-Man team-up with Daredevil against Kingpin sounds like a perfect no-brainer.

Too good to be true, I suppose.

Chameleon using a more advanced version of the "Photostatic Veil". They could tie it into "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" where Dmitri Smerdyakov downloaded the SHIELD files that Black Widow released to the public and hidden in encrypted blueprints was the Photostatic Veil of which he rebuilt and made it far more advanced with the backing of Wilson Fisk. Chameleon works for Fisk now and he impersonated judges and lawyers during the Blip to erase Fisk's criminal charges and exonerate him of all crimes.

And here I was thinking the director update was gonna be anything but a rumour. Either way, I wouldn't mind seeing Drew Goddard take over. Feels right if Daredevil and Kingpin will appear.

And I hope Kingpin does. He's the perfect villain for both Spider-Man and Daredevil. Spider-Man will probably leave the street level again with Avengers 5 & 6, so better to right that street-level wave right now.
