SPIDER-MAN Director Sam Raimi Rumored To Be In Talks To Helm NO WAY HOME Sequel

Sam Raimi, who helmed the original Spider-Man trilogy, is rumored to be one of the filmmakers in contention to helm Marvel and Sony's No Way Home sequel...

Could the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy return to helm the sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Sony/Marvel have yet to make an official announcement regarding Spider-Man 4 (as in, the fourth solo movie featuring Tom Holland's take on the wall-crawler), but we know the project is in development, and we now have some more names to add to the list of filmmakers that might be in the mix to take over from Jon Watts.

According to World Of Reel, Sam Raimi (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) is in contention to direct the next Spider-Man movie, and the site has also heard that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons) and Jon Favreau (Iron Man) may be possibilities.

Some fans were hoping Raimi would return to direct a follow-up to his Spider-Man 3 starring Tobey Maguire, so if there is any truth to this and he does sign on, it'll be interesting to see how the news will be received.

Justin Lin - who helmed five of the Fast and Furious movies as well as Star Trek Beyond - and Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) were previously mentioned as possible contenders, but they have both boarded other projects since.

Sony's Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige are rumored to have had some disagreements when it comes to the overall plot, with the latter hoping to scale the Multiverse elements back for a smaller-scale story. Rothman, meanwhile, is said to want to capitalize on No Way Home's success by bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back as their respective takes on Peter Parker.

Holland will, of course, be back as the MCU's Spidey, but the actor is believed to be "growing wary" of playing the iconic hero, so this could be his final time in the red and blue suit.

No Way Home scribes Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are currently working on the script, but we still don't know which of the Wall-Crawler's fearsome foes will be causing problems for Peter and co. Most of Spidey's major bad guys have already been utilized in previous films (Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, etc), but a recent rumor claimed that the still untitled sequel will feature a villain we haven't seen in live-action yet.

What do you make of this rumor? Would you like to see Sam Raimi step behind the camera for Spider-Man 4 - but not his Spider-Man 4? Drop us a comment down below.

@Malatrova15 - ahhh that’s right - I forgot he legally changed his name from James Wan to Justin Lin. My bad.

@Mrtoke - I don’t think so. I still enjoyed a lot of his directing in MoM and if we can’t have Goddard - I’ll happily take Raimi.

@Mrtoke - "outdated"?
His directorial style has always had a kind of Norman Rockwell/Frank Capra hokeyness to it, but that's the style. Quentin Tarantino's style borrows from 1970s grindhouse cinema. Christopher Nolan's style is reminiscent of David Lean.
Besides, the directing prowess on MoM puts most movies to shame. On other movies it seems like the director is sleepwalking through the whole thing. Raimi movies are alive.

MoM was a mess, but a [frick]ing cool mess.

It's too good to be true therefore it won't happen with Raimi

While raimi is a fantastic director, I think he should stick to his original universe, his talent is wasted in mcu, multiverse of madness was so dumb but the direction of that movie spectacular. You can tell by the distinctive style that it's raimi. Multiverse of madness
Story 3/10, direction 9/10

@Sicario - Give Raimi Scorpion and Daredevil and watch him craft magic.

@SonOfAGif - Agreed. If I may expound upon that a bit: *Ahem* Spidey is street-level (no multiversal shenanigans). He has to deal with annoying gangster-types like Silvermane and Tombstone (who work for Kingpin). The big bad is Kingpin/Mayor Fisk and spider-Man is becoming a thorn in his side. Mac Gargan has been released from prison and is trying to go legit by becoming a PI (like in the comics - Raimi should appreciate that). He is, however, obsessed with discovering Spidey's true identity to seek revenge. Kingpin makes him into Scorpion and he becomes Kingpin's main muscle (also a fair match for Spidey alone). Enter Dare Devil picking up on the story from "DD:BA". It takes DD and Spidey working together to take down Kingpin and Scorpion (for now).

Along the way we can see Peter watching MJ from afar but keeping his distance (like when she comes home to visit for the holidays from MIT). In the meantime, out of loneliness and curiosity to "walk on the wild side" he hooks up with Black Cat (whom unbeknownst to him is a girl at the college he's attending).

To be continued...

@SonOfAGif - somehow I don't see it, care to explain?

@Sicario - on your argument...that is WHY we need Raimi IN the MCU. to compensate for the lousy writers.

sure, story wise Doc Strange 2 could've been 10x better, but Raimi's directing just made it 10x more watchable.

we NEED more established, comic book-friendly directors...what we don't need are the subpar, often first time, non-comic book friendly writers.

@StSteven - That actually sounds fantastic! It could be at least 2 movies maybe even a "street level" trilogy

@Sicario - Spider-Man 2 is one of the greatest superhero movies of all time do to how excellent the writing, filming, and cast were. Raimi has a special style to his filming that I believe that Spider-Man (Holland) can benefit from. And if it's a street level story set within the Mayor Fisk Saga then it would make sense for a villain that hasn't even been on the big screen yet to be used by Raimi such as Scorpion.
StSteven
StSteven - 4/17/2024, 10:40 PM
@narrow290 - Thanks! And yeah it could (and should) absolutely be a street level trilogy which culminates in the final battle with Fisk in the 3rd movie, resulting in his being stripped of his Mayor position and imprisoned (for now). And if they do a trilogy then that gives them plenty of time to flesh out the gangster-level characters while leaving it mystery that they're secretly working for Fisk so they can build up to that (because he's now a "totally upstanding law-abiding mayor guy". Plus they can introduce other characters like Mr. Negative as a mid-level big bad for one of the movies as well as Miles, Smythe, etc.

The way that I think would make for a great way to end Holland's run (for now) would be for this second trilogy to cover Peter's college years (like the first one did his high school years) and along the way he hooks up with a few other girls (like Felicity and Gwen) while still pining for MJ but not wanting to endanger her again, so he keeps his distance. But then finally at the end of the 3rd movie in this trilogy he graduates college, hands the Spider-Man mantle over to Miles, and finally makes MJ remember him so that they can go off for the happy ending. For now...

So I'm going to go ahead and hire a contractor to build me a Scrooge McDuck style money bin for all the cash that I'm Marvel is going to be dropping off any day now... Yep, any day now... mmhmmm, mmmhmmm, any day now...

ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/17/2024, 5:16 AM
@cadunovaes01 - Tom Holland's Spider-Man basically became the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man at the end of NWH. He's had to say goodbye to his best friend. Him and MJ are over. He's living in the same run down apartment.

Wouldn't it be neat if Raimi brought back the Ditkoviches?

I think they should skip the whole 'I don't have an identity' thing and have him working at the Bugle (freelance) and attending college. That way we can just dive into classic Spidey goodness with no restraints. Just a good Spidey story.

I love Raimi, but unless you're keeping it street level and giving Raimi full control of the direction and editing, it ain't gonna be worth it.

Multiverse of Madness had so many moments of greatness, but generally felt as though there were too many cooks in the kitchen. Whatever amount of studio input was given to Raimi in Spidey 1 and 2, that's the maximum amount they need to give him for this.

Raimi should do something else like Doctor strange 3 or Secret wars. I like the duo for Spider-Man 4 since they wrote Homecoming so they would be familiar with MCU Spider-man.

This culture of rumor and scooper mill is so stupid.

In an ideal world where people are critical of integrity, by the first wrong claim, these people should get forgotten right away.

Instead, they get careers out of it no matter how low their batting averages are

@Mrtoke - That level of corniness was 'outdated' in 2002. The corniness in Superman: The Movie was outdated in 1978.

It's classicism. Americana. Pop Art.

What would be modern, Tic Tok?
