SPIDER-MAN: Homecoming Short Review [Involves SPOILERS]

Before you get in, this review will be filled with spoilers whenever necessary. You can just scroll to the end of the article to read the verdict.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a very unique movie compared to the general tone of the MCU movies. 

The movie does not involve a so powerful or (not yet) iconic main character, or a villain that is trying to take over/end the world or avenge someone. It involves a group of characters all contributing to the plot in one way or another. 

First, about the villain. Michael Keaton is dominating all the scenes he is in as a man who is (mainly) doing what he does to keep his family afloat after he is practically fired from his job because of Tony Stark's Damage Control. Toomes is one of the most fleshed out villains among the entire MCU. Throughout the whole movie, he is never seen trying to kill anyone intentionally, except Spider-Man. We see him in his home, in his hideout, even while dropping her daughter to her prom and all of those moments lets us to know more about the character while serving the plot. The fact that we will see Michael Keaton in future MCU movies as Toomes is incredibly exciting.

Second, about the side characters. The high-school bunch (especially Ned Leeds) is incredibly sympathetic, even Flash gets his fair share towards the end of the movie. Liz Allen is a clever and attractive love interest. Michelle, (or MJ as her friends call her) is the least fleshed out side character with Flash, who is just the occasional bully who has a weak spot for Spider-Man, which is also a sign that their characters will get more development in the upcoming sequel/sequels. This Aunt May is the best one we've seen on screen, she is very protective towards Peter, and she brings the movie to an end with a very understandable F-bomb as she learns Peter's secret is a sign that she will be the moral compass for our hero in future solo movies. Happy Hogan is the character that reflects Peter's bravery and growth the best, while stealing some scenes. Tony Stark is Tony Stark. Even though he is heavily featured in the marketing campaign, he has a 20 minute screen time, so anyone worried about an 'Iron Man 4' can be relieved.

Third, about our hero. Tom Holland's Peter Parker is the one you've been waiting for. He never gets into a spot where you'll find him annoying or irresponsible, unlike his predecessors. He is truly star of the film.

And fourth, about the side villains. Shocker(s) and our future Scorpion never go further from being occasional jerks, and Logan Marshall-Green is wasted as the first Shocker, who is the only character that dies throughout the entire film.

The movie feels as self-contained as Guardians of the Galaxy, except for the callbacks to Civil War, which was the first movie that Peter Parker was introduced to MCU. The tone was the one I've been waiting for all this time, where we see Peter Parker in early high school, trying to catch bad guys while trying to keep his life balanced. Hope we will get more movies from his high school era by Jon Watts, since his movie is the most entertaining one in MCU to date.



VERDICT: Spider-Man: Homecoming is the most entertaining movie with one of the best villains in the whole MCU so far, and it is the second best Spider-Man movie you can find before 2018 with sympathetic main characters, a plot that fails to ring false and with a humor that fits the movie like Stark's spider suit. Don't miss it.
