Spidey's Reboot Might NOT Be Another Origin Story

Just wanna point out that I'm new to the site, though I have been lurking around for a while. This place is pretty much where I keep up with most CBMs. Just wanna say if I did anything wrong or stupid sorry in advance.

Also I know the news is pretty old but just wanna put it up cause people still seem to be freaking out going all "NO WE ALREADY KNOW SPIDEY'S ORIGIN, WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER ONE!" I know it's not set in stone but there's a REALLY GOOD CHANCE that it won't be another origin so... stop freaking out...

If they make a reboot, no to Black Cat.It's too early.

@Shaman Haha thanks man. Personally not too big a fan of the "Ultimate Spider-Man" but I'm a huge fan of "Spectacular Spider-Man" show. What I love about that show it that it draws in it's source material from everywhere: past shows, original comics, ultimate comics, and even the movies and altogether you would think it'd be a jumbled mess but instead you get a completely different retelling of one of the greatest super-heroes of all time. I don't care if it's for kids, that show is a masterpiece. It shows that no matter how different the story may be even from the comics, you can still enjoy it. That show is one of the reasons I'm really optimistic about the reboot. It's also the reason I maintain a love-hate relationship with Sony. (They give an awesome animated series while you wait for the next movie, but then stop it, waiting for it to increase ratings, go figure.)

The Ultimate Spider man story would be perfect for the reboot IMO

I didn't really want a reboot, I'm hoping for a continuation/reboot... but if they go the full reboot route and go back to high school I'm hopeful for something like SSM or USM.

USM get's a lot of hate on this site and I don't understand why, I love USM I don't get how it "SUCKS" the stories are very well told and the art is excellent, and the video game is my favorite Spidey game ever made, the game was what got me reading the USM comics.

The 616U has been done and they didn't do as good of a job as could have been done, and this pertains to all marvel movies thus far, I think it is time to take a que from Marvel studios and integrate the Ultimate universe in with 616 it worked for Iron Man and the Hulk these studios really need to look at what Marvel is doing and go along with it.

Well guys don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem whatsoever with the Ultimate Spider-Man, I do have a problem with having the movies based SOLELY on it. I think that having a perpetually Young Peter Parker would eventually get tiresome and old, literally. They'd have to recast the leads every 2 or 3 movies or so. I am with Osiris though, Iron Man and Hulk were both able to meld the Ultimate Universe and the 616 together and come out with a really good movie, and I'm thinking that's what Sony's trying to do, hence bringing him back to high school. Marvel IS part of the project (a fact most people seem to be ignoring) and will hopefully be able to guide Sony into doing this the right way. Then again this is all my just my theories and conjectures, we'll see what'll happen once the movie actually goes into production.

And for the record Sony wouldn't have let Marvel in on this project unless they were looking for help from them and trying to reboot this the right way. I mean for a company most of you guys accuse of being money-grubbing coporate suits, why else let them in on this opportunity? Just some food for thought guys.

Shaman - I think you mean to say that Ultimate Spidey is brillaintly re-written! Bendis has just re-imagined concepts that have been around for decades! He basically distilled and contemporized the Spider-Man myhtos by changing certain aspects around!

He actually borrowed the concept from John Byrne, who tried a similar approach with the Spider-Man:Chapetr One series in the late '90's! Because the series was set in mainstream continuity, everyone immmediately rejected it, irrespective of the title's quality.

I will say though, that Mark Bagley's art has improved dramatically since the late '80s, which I'm very impressed by. My beef with the Ultimate line lies in the fact that a lot of younger people seem to think that just because they enjoy the series that it AUTOMATICALLY supplants (or should) the original!

At the same time I feel that the general comic book reading audience has suffered from Spidey fatigue due to the character's overexposure - especially in the '90s! So while Ultimate Spidey is a great read most of the time, to me it can't compete with the timeless appeal of the classics! In my mind, the two series will never attain the same status!

JonF- No, i meant brilliantly written. As in the writing was brilliant, word for word. The "concept" might be re-envisioned from elsewhere but i really don't care. It's brilliantly written. And i know many fans of the ultimate line and NONE of them want it or feel like it should "supplant" the original. NONE. They either enjoy one of the two but mostly BOTH. No one i know ever said they should replace this with that. And i was working in a comic book shop the first year the ultimate line came in.

YOU might feel that, because there is a "different" line of comics about your old favorite hero (which is gathering more popularity than their original line), it poses some sort of "threat" when it actually doesn't. The 616 is fine just the way it is and isn't gonna be replaced by the Ultimate line.

In regards to spidey, he is THE marvel hero that is and always was EVERYWHERE!!! He's litterally all over the place and it's always been that way. New Spider-Man books came out the woodwork WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY before the Ultimate line ever showed up and still continue to do so. The ONLY thing that gave Spidey a bit more exposure was his boxoffice features, period. Spidey is not overexposed NOW, he's ALWAYS been!

The bottom line is that the Ultimate line was never meant to be for EVERYONE. If it's not for you, just leave it be. It doesn't need everyone's approval or to attain the same status as the 616 line in everybody's mind. It's meant to be bought by the people who enjoy it. It deserves it's own boxoffice adaptation as much as the 616 did and as much as the Spectacular Spider-Man animated show does. All three are brilliant in their own way. They all have something good to bring to the character even though they vary from line to line.

Amazing Spider-Man has always been the main Spidey book! Every other Spidey title takes a backseat to it, and likely always will! The overexposure I was referring to was toward the comic book fan community.

After "Amazing", Marvel Team-Up was secondary, "Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man" was watered down, and "Web Of Spider-Man" started out with a tone all its own, but eventually degenerated into a third-tier title. The same can be said for the eponymous book that debuted in 1990.

Nowadays Marvel has "Amazing" coming out more frequently and the recently added new "Web Of" series. So in the 1990's he was DEFINITELY featured in too many titles of his own, nevermind guest appearances!

As for the Ultimate line - I do like it. I'm just a bit worried about the potential for confusion among the newer readers who don't have anyone older explaining things to them. Hell, there are many people who take the '90s Spidey toon as gospel!!

The point is that Ultimate Spider-Man is just another adaptation of the original material regardless of how you feel about it. So making a film adaptation of another adaptation may be too removed from the source to work.
