There has been a lot of talk recently about the proposed ‘Supergirl’ television series that is being shopped around various networks. It seems a lot of the details are still up in the air (little flying reference in there for you) such as its title, its network and consequently whether it could become part of the Arrowverse alongside the Flash.
Kara is my favourite DC character and I think her New 52 journey has been one of the better ones. The re-telling of her origin was not as good as the Jeph Loebb Superman/ Batman apocalypse version, but it is told in a way that makes it perfect for adaptation on the big or small screen and her subsequent adventures have been funny and emotional in equal measure with a healthy dose of action as well. This groundwork paves the way for a talented actress to come in and make the role her own, so I thought I would (rather prematurely) throw a few names in the hat to fill Kara’s tall red boots.
I have decided to include my top five semi- realistic choices for the character, in other words choices that I think may be interested in a television role rather than big name movie actresses. I have also thrown in a bolter at the end.
5- Amber Heard
Amber made her big screen acting debut in the Friday Night Lights movie but she really caught my eye during the Mixed Martial Arts/ Teen drama fusion movie Never Back Down. In this film she showed her ability to play a character who was smart, confident and sexy but who also had a strong moral compass. She was able to demonstrate a good emotional range and establish good chemistry with her co-star, which will be important for the inevitable love story that will be developed on a tv show.

Heard is currently in filming for another big screen outing but if it turns out to be anything like her other cracks at film, Drive Angry for example.... she may just fancy some more television parts.
4- Katrina Bowden
Katrina is best known as ‘Cerie’ in tv’s 30 Rock where she showed her considerable acting talents and comic timing which was utilised in her big screen outings for American Pie: The reunion and Movie 43 amongst others. Thor has shown us that when tackling God-like characters humour is important in making them relatable for an audience. Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Agents of SHIELD have also utilised this technique and it is likely to be used in portraying the “World Breaker” as a relatable human character. Also let’s face it; she’s jaw-dropping beautiful which is always a bonus when casting a Supergirl.

Bowden is set to show what she can do in a more dramatised setting in the Spielberg produced Public Morals in 2015 where she will play a prostitute that maintains an air of innocence but if it doesn’t catch-on she may become available and any experience she gains playing a character who tackles dark life situations with innocence can only be a bonus.
3- Emily Kinney

The Walking Dead Fan-favourite ‘Beth’ has shown Kinney capable of playing a character who pulls an aura of hope and innocence around with her, even after her world has ended. Despite being in her late 20s Emily is capable of playing a character in her teens of in young adulthood with a level of emotional maturity and strength that would do Kara justice. Kinney shares the otherworldly beauty of Saorise Ronan or Janet Devlin, a ‘Luna Lovegood’ kind of pretty that would be interesting when applied to the last daughter of a dead world.
2- Aimee Teegarden
Another Friday Night Lights alumni Aimee received an Actress of the Year award for her performances in the critically acclaimed television drama. Throughout the show she played the role of an intelligent, confident and powerful young woman trapped in a town she hates. Sound familiar? We watched her deliver performances that were sweet, heartbreaking, funny and uplifting; she really has it all. She even managed to be attractive throughout even with that horrific fringe!

Despite all this Teegarden has failed to break into mainstream movies and since her more recent tv role in Starcrossed (I still haven’t watched it but am keen to do so) is over and done with, this little mound of talent could be primed for a kryptonian make-over (dodgey ‘New 52’ fringe included).

Claudia Lee
Claudia Lee is a diamond in the not-so-rough... in that she’s all smooth and shiny. A performer all her life Lee is a talented musician and more importantly a brilliant dancer (always a great springboard for action/ flight scenes). If you don’t watch the brilliant
Hart of Dixie you may well only know her as “The hot dancer who vomits” in
Kick Ass 2; If you are a fan of the show thought you will see that she possesses many of the talents of those above rolled into one. Her comic timing is fantastic and she tackles her role of ‘Magnolia’ with an innocence and naivety that makes an audience love her regardless of what schemes she concocts.

Claudia is only 18 and so is the perfect age to take on the role. Her recurring part in
Hart of Dixie has not stopped her from other projects like
Surviving Jack and a couple of big screen outings so one assumes that she could fit Kara into her schedule- plus she is already on the CW so if
Supergirl finds a home there she must be in with a chance.
The Bolter: Molly Quinn
Molly has famously played the role before, voicing the character in
Superman Unbound. Like many of these actresses Molly is young and has a feeling of that youth and innocence about her. In
Castle she portrays a smart, strong moralled pretty girl with a big heart and she does so brilliantly. If DC fancy something a bit different to comic book Kara, then Quinn must be worth a shout.
