Editorial Opinion

I have now seen the Man of Steel twice. I greatly disliked it upon my first viewing of the movie. I wrote a review on this site and was blasted and abused as a result of my honest opinion. I was accused of having a Marvel bias, liking Superman Returns and various other things. Others are experiencing the same thing.

Why?

Most of us wanted this to be the Superman film we've always wanted to see. The Donner films were great in their way, but we really need a GOOD Superman film. Just this scenario alone is enough to produce great bias and intense feelings.

Having seen the film a second time, I really liked Cavill's Superman. At least, he has the look down pat and he did the best he could with that script. Unfortunately, I personally think the script is awful. The scenes between Superman and Lois are painful to watch. The editing is terrible. Jor-El is in the film WAY too much. And so on. I'm not complaining about too much action. I liked it. What I'm really trying to say is that there were definitely flaws in this film. Is it the best CBM ever? Not even remotely close. Is it the best Superman film? No. I don't think it is.

Can you name one scene that was more powerful than when Superman saved Lois from the helicopter in the first film? Was there a scene that just showed how awesome it is to fly like they did in Chronicle and the first film? Yes, they showed him rocketing around, but it was so quick. The film was set on 11/10, but I think they could have shown Superman just enjoying his power. (Also, how strong was he? Definitely nowhere near what he is in the comics...)

So why am I writing this article? People are entitled to their opinions. If you think this is the best film ever, great. If you think it sucks, fine. Since when is it a problem for people to express their opinion? I've seen incredible amounts of Marvel hatred, which is completely stupid and false.

There is no reason to bash Marvel because you so badly want DC to succeed. Likewise, there is no reason to bash DC either. The better each company does, the better they each will do as a result. This is a win-win situation here!

I'm finding it really difficult to read comments on articles when coming to this site. I also know I'm not the only one who feels this way. So can I just ask that we all try to be a little more fair and accepting of other opinions? There are no absolutes. If you think Man of Steel was the best film ever, that doesn't make anyone who thinks otherwise an idiot or "Marvelite".

Let's try to avoid a flame war here.

i really enjoyed the movie mainly for the action(if a little over the top in the final 40 minutes) & the visuals.

but i can also see why people don't like it as well, unlike others on this site.

@BlueMex Like many people, he probably went to see it twice to make sure that his opinions on the movie were valid so that he could formulate a legitimate argument as to why the film was a disappointment. I agree that the script was pretty bad and so was the pacing. It had great action and a few good emotional scenes, but it wasn't close to the best CBM ever. It was the best Superman film for me, though.

@THEDARKNIGHT100 - I watch it twice, it was the same movie. Still good for me. That's the reason why i would pay to watch a movie again in theaters.

I enjoyed it. yes the script was kinda weak thats what happens when Goyer does it. Over all i enojoyed the film, not you typical boring origin movie. It just buggs me when people used words like "painful to watch" is a little exaggerated.

Of course it's okay to not like it. People who use Donner's film as an excuse as to why people didn't like it are pathetic.

And for everyone talking about how great and emotional the scene near the end when Supes killed Zod was, your just being naive. It had the potential to be a great scene, but Snyder kinda screwed it up. You had no sense of danger for those people he was threatening with his laser vision. It was so blatantly clear that they could easily just run away. They also literally had a full minute to do so. They could have run straight, to the side, ducked, or even crawled under Zod's laser. And for the argument that they were in shock, really? Maybe I can understand for a few seconds, but you would have to be mentally disabled to not escape a non-danger like that with so much space and time. Just my opinion.

Ok, so people didn't like Superman Returns because it was too much like the Donner films, not enough action, and superman didn't punch anyone/thing...

Now, people don't like Man Of steel because it was not like the Donner films, and it had way too much action?

Morons, just morons.

You guys completely missed the point of this guy's article. Everyone has an opinion, and you can't change that, and you can't deem someone stupid, and idiot, Marvelite, Nolanite, DCnite, etc. just because your opinion is different. I like Man of Steel myself, but it's far from "the best CBM ever" but it is the best Superman film ever, in my opinion.

Some people on this site are incredibly disrespectful. Of course it's okay to dislike Man of Steel just like it's okay to dislike The Avenger, The Amazing Spider-Man, ect. People just take this stuff way too seriously. Believe me, I still get shit on for being a massive supporter of The Amazing Spider-Man and thinking The Avengers is the best comicbook movie. I completely agree with this article except for the opinion on Man of Steel. I had insanely low expectations and I was surprised that I enjoyed the movie. This article is gonna get a thumbs up from me.

FrenzyFreak
FrenzyFreak - 6/20/2013, 10:54 AM
@Kjo Nope your still the naive one. If you seriously think that you were in that situation for that long and the clear opportunity to escape, and you just stood there like an idiot, then there is clearly something wrong with you. Like I said, it's just bad directing on Snyder's part. He could've easily put them into a corner with nowhere else to go, but instead he reveals to us that there is basically 10 different easy ways for them to escape within a long period of time. He took one of the most important and potentially best scenes in the movie and ripped out all of the emotion and danger from it with that dumb move. Again, if you found that scene emotional, that's your opinion and that's fine. But if you really think that's how you would've reacted in that situation your probably not going to live a very long time.

@ RextheKing - Thank you.

I saw it twice because I promised a friend I would see it with him and didn't when I saw it the first time. Also, I wanted to see if I would like it more seeing it again.

I did not hate the movie. I don't think that's possible. But it was a big disappointment. THE POINT I WAS MAKING IS THAT PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION WITHOUT HAVING SOME FANBOY LOSER JUSTIFY/DISMISS THAT OPINION OR INSULT THE PERSON FOR MAKING IT.

News flash, morons. Your crap still smells.

Oh, I should mention... I prefer MOS to Superman Returns. I think I even prefer Dark Knight Rises to that garbage.

So what if someone doesn't like the film? It's there opinion not yours. Some of you need to grow up. And just because they don't like ONE Dc film doed not automatically make them a Marvel troll.

Anytime someone doesn't like a film that a majority of fanboys love, you are either "crazy", or a fan of another comic company (Marvel or dc) I hate that. When I said I didn't think avengers was the greatest CBM of all time people assume I am a Nolanite (Which is funny since Spider-man and Hulk are my favourite characters of all time).
