Costume Designer Discusses Superman's Suit & Krypton's Origins In MAN OF STEEL

Michael Wilkinson spoke at the 5D | FLUX conference earlier this week, and dropped a few tidbits regarding Superman's iconic "S" costume design and how it will tie in to Krypton's history..

Nothing too revealing here but maybe some mild SPOILERS if you want to know absolutely nothing about the movie before seeing it. Costume designer Michael Wilkinson spoke at the 5D | FLUX conference at the USC School of Cinematic Arts the other day and revealed a few interesting things about Krypton and Superman's duds. Apparently his fashion sense is shared by his Kryptonian kin, and that distinctive "chain linked look" that has divided fans is designed that way for a specific reason.

From billdesowitz.com

Wilkinson explained that since they created a “neo-medieval” back story for Krypton (which included the creation of a new language), it made sense to utilize the suit design as part of the mythology. “Everyone on Krypton wears this suit,” he suggested. Using ZBrush and rapid prototyping, Wilkinson came up the blue/gray color and chain-linked look. “It has function and purpose and a logic to this fantastical world,” he added.

So nothing too exciting but a few interesting details on Krypton etc. I like that they will be perhaps delving further back into the planet's origins and history that we have seen before in previous movies. What do you guys make of it?

Sounds good. We need a new picture of the suit in it's full glory though. Pictures of other Kryptonians wouldn't hurt either. Also a picture of Amy Adam's Lois Lane would be nice.

Nice. Yet another film that is going to give more depth to an iconic hero.

lol they should check out the New Krypton storyline if they really wanna be "historical" about this...the foundation, guilds and power-balance of their civilization are really well explored in that run

I like how they are being creative, and have a vision, instead of just thinking
" This has to be as close to the comics as possible!!"

And the whole language creation thing is intriguing, the details like that, are the ones that make a big positive difference.

That's a new and interesting take on Krypton.

So Superman's suit is essentially modern chain mail? I think the movie costume looks very cool. It needed a modern update for the big screen IMO.

I'm a Marvel guy, but Superman has always been my #1 (I know, I know). One of my first toys was a Supes action figure that I still have on my mantle almost 30 years later. I mention all that to establish that I'm not just some troll taking cheap shots when I say this: From the bracelets to the basketball texture, the new suit is just awful. I'm hopeful it will work in the context of the the story, but I'm not holding my breath.

@Froggy

My guess for Zod learning English is do it like they did Kara for Superman/Batman Apocalypse. It took her about only a week to learn the whole language because of her increase brain function from being expose to the yellow sun.

@ironman53 The Elvish was awesome in LOTR because Tolkien created those stories around his invented languages as a linguist. This will be nothing like Tolkien's genius! This will be a sad Hollywood made up language.

love the idea. makes perfect sense. always wondered that; did everyone from krypton wear tights and a cape? if they didnt,the suit makes no sense.

@Intruder

The whole idea about exploring the history of Krypton goes back at least to the late 80's and "The World of Krypton" post crisis,post Man of Steel mini series.
