David S. Goyer Explains Why General Zod Appears In MAN OF STEEL; Touches On Possible Gotham City Easter Egg

On Why Zod Is In MOS:
The way (Christopher) Nolan and I have always approached the Batman movies as well is you never say, 'Hey, which villain would be cool for this movie?' You start with the story first. What kind of story? What kind of theme do you want to tell? So we worked that out. Then, usually the villain becomes obvious in terms of who's going to be the appropriate antagonist for that. When you guys see the movie, the only villain we could've used was Zod and the Kryptonians. I mean, when you see what the whole story is, nothing else would have even made sense, just like in the same way that nothing else would've made sense other than Bane in the other one. I mean, you let the story dictate who the right antagonist is rather than the other way around.

Goyer, producer Charles Roven & director Zack Snyder On If There Is A Reference To Gotham City:
Goyer: I don't think so.
Roven: Really, we just really focused on this character.
Snyder: On this world.
Roven: This character and this world.
Snyder: It's like, enough work to do. Are you kidding me? (Laughs)

On If The Famous Line "Kneel Before Zod..." Appears In MOS:
I can neither confirm… (Laughter) I have a pretty good sense of what - we talked a lot about what we wanted to talk about and what we don't want to talk about.

As we continued to watch filming, we got a sneak peek at a pre-visualization of the entire action sequence in the movie. In it, we see US military soldiers and snipers shooting at the unnamed CG character in the film. Superman, overpowered by the Kryptonians, tries to flee by flying down the street. But as he jets off, his foot is caught by the Kryptonian and he is slammed into the pavement like a rag doll. Faora and the CG character stand on either side of him ready to strike. Superman then grabs Faora, slams her into the pavement, then slams her into the other attacking Kryptonian. Superman then flies down the street dragging the stunned Faora behind him. Yes, he uses Faora as a club to beat his other opponent. As the brutal action shows, "Man of Steel" is truly unlike any Superman movie we've seen before.

Hit the link below for the entire interview with cast members Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and more.

Man of Steel follows the Last Son of Krypton on his epic journey to become mankind's shinning beacon of hope for a brighter future. With the beliefs and values instilled by his adoptive parents Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha (Diane Lane) Kent, a young Clark (Henry Cavill) sets out to find his place in the world. But when the nefarious General Zodd (Michael Shannon) arrives on Earth, Clark will have to choose between being a normal human or Kal-el,son of Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and humanity's greatest protector and champion. Filmed in IMAX and shot in Vancouver, Chicago and Plano, Illinois, Man of Steel will be released on June 14, 2013 by Warner Bros. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) with a screenplay by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) the Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Inception) produced feature film will surely be the summer blockbuster of 2013.

Well, considering local stores around as well as online have a plethora of shirts and merch of Shannon's Zod with a caption "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD", It's safe to say he'll say it. I mean, I know he said he didn't, but that was last year, they were still shooting. Wonder who he'll say it to? Humans, via media or Lois, Clark, hell, he may very well say it to Jor-El. It seems they'll be butting heads quite hard...

Hopefully Zod dies in this film. I've personally had enough of him. He was already the villain of the Donner flicks, smallville season 9 and now this.

Time to end Zod. And i personally hope he never says "kneel before Zod" in this movie. People need to stop clinging so tightly to the Donner flicks like a security blanket

How about instead of riding Batman's worn down dick, you reference Amazon/Wonder Woman or Flash, hell, do Green Lantern. Have Jor-El playing around on some computer tech and look at a picture of Oa. That's be a nice easter egg like the X-Men's Blackbird in Iron Man.

Ok, they don't share the same universe. Fine. That's good for me. Let's leave Nolan's trilogy alone..

Personally I am of the idea that I would rather have an amazing, close to perfect movie with no references or Easter eggs, than a sub-par, letdown of a movie that is full of them.

As a Supes' fan I couldn't care less if any other character was mentioned, they haven't got Superman right for the last twenty years lets just focus on that first then spread our wings.

Something is up. Wouldn't surprise me if we see Bane walking in to the Luth Corp. building at the end of the movie.

I love what I have seen in the movie and I think Goyer did a great job... but Bane was the only villain that made sense in TDKR? actually... the Mutant King would have made more sense... Bane wasn't even Bane.... so how could he have been the only one to make sense?

@Intruder.

I agree, it sounds really stupid, but still something is up :).

Just as there was a few people who knew the biggest plot twist in movie history (real deal bout' Vader) in The Empire Strikes Back, I think it the same deal here.

I'm also sure that Jor-El survived Krypton and ended up as Zod's prisoner.

Well, we'll see eventually...

First of all Intruders gay. Second of all there's gonna be easter eggs in the movie, Snyder himself said it in a interview not too long ago. This interview was done almost TWO YEARS ago.

I David Goyer kidding? Us fanboys have been arguing between Zod and Braniac for years now and have complained that Superman Returns lacked a hero that got into a fight with a worthy villain that could match is strength and powers. They only gave us what we asked for and not something they just some villain they thought would be cool.

Snyder isn't even behind the story in this film. He's just bringing it to life. It's like people can't get that into their heads.
