David S. Goyer On MAN OF STEEL

David S. Goyer On MAN OF STEEL

Goyer talks Man of Steel, says he and Christopher Nolan will bring the same 'naturalistic approach' they used on Batman. Do you guys think that same approach will work for a Kryptonian alien who flies and shoots laser beams out of his eyes?

David S. Goyer is a frequent scribe of comic book movie adaptations. There's Blade, Blade II, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. But there's also Blade: Trinity and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance which prevents some superhero enthusiasts from giving the writer a full endorsement. Regardless, the suits at Warner Bros. apparently have strong confidence in Goyer, placing two of the studio's biggest upcoming film franchises, Godzilla and Superman in the hands of Goyer, films the studio hopes can fill a void left by the completion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogys and the Harry Potter film series. Below, Goyer shares a brief sentiment about his approach to Man of Steel.

What Man of Steel has in common with Goyer’s previous works:
Goyer: What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is try to bring the same naturalistic approach that we adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want our stories to be rooted in reality, like they could happen in the same world we live in. It’s not that easy with Superman, and actually this doesn’t necessarily mean we will make a dark movie. But working on this reboot we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this one actually happened. How would people react to this? What impact would the presence of Superman in the real world have? What I really like to do is write ‘genre’ stories without a cartoonish element. I did the same with Da Vinci’s Demons, and I’ll do the same with Man of Steel.”

I'm sure there are strong opinions out there about how to approach Superman but we'll ultimately have to wait and see how the film turns out. The original Christopher Reeve films and the more recent Superman Returns all had a bit of kitsch and self-awareness of the genre they were representing. In the brief trailer that was released for Zack Snyder's take there was no hint of that so I'd wager we'll definitely be seeing a unique take this June.

Man of Steel is an upcoming American superhero film under the development of Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, and David S. Goyer. Based on the DC Comics character Superman, the film will be a reboot of the Superman film series. Using Chicago and Vancouver as a backdrop, with production to be based in west suburban Plano, Illinois, the film entered principal photography in August 2011, for a planned theatrical release on June 14, 2013 by Warner Bros., which also includes IMAX venues.

Clark Kent is a journalist in his twenties who was adopted as a child by Martha and Jonathan Kent after he was transported to Earth from the dying planet Krypton. Raised with the values of his adoptive parents, he feels alienated because of his unique super abilities and struggles to find his place in life. When the world is attacked, he becomes the hero Superman to protect its people.

Interesting idea. Weather it works or not, remains to be seen. Still I like it that he didn't just say they made it "dark", dark is alright in somethings but not everything.

I agree. I think obviously, with a modern Superman movie, making it a little dark is good. But not too dark.

I'm definitely super stoked about MOS, going to be amazing. Come quickly 2013!

I can't wait for the full trailer.I'm hoping it will give me a better idea of the tone and look of the film. But I love the suit and Shannon should be awesome as Zod, so at least there's that.

I love how he talks about how he and Nolan tried to do this....Wow. The only reason I was excited was Zack Snyder was directing, but it's clear his ideas have been shoved out of the equation and he's been told to STFU. That's just great, because now I know I don't have to waste my money on this piece of shit.

I like David S. Goyer but you CAN`T HAVE THE SAME look or feel of nolan movies to Superman, TDKR SUCKED BAD, one of the worst movies I have ever watched...

Goyer and Nolan are one trick ponies.

Its a damn good trick, I'll give them that.

But approaching Superman the same way diminishes what a fresh approach to the character could have brought.

I will see this, but I have the feeling that the combination of WB/Snyder/Goyer/Nolan will [frick] this movie up. It's ok though because it will automatically get a free pass as the "Greatest movie ever!!" by those who would follow, and worship Nolan.

The "naturalistic" approach seems a given, that's just how most superhero movies SHOULD be made. As in "what if this sh!t really happened in our world as it is?" And of course all the babies that have no room for plausibility and need everything spoon-fed to them in their movies *TDKR haters* will also hate on this. Well, I feel sorry for you, but the rest of us will get an awesome Superman movie :) Good day.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 10/1/2012, 10:54 AM
Sorry, but that "naturalism = mature" BS is lame and tired.

Superman exists in a world that with aliens, extradimensional entities, metahumans, etc.

His story isn't based in "our world as it is".

I wouldn't put 100% faith in Goyer, but paired with Nolan, my confidence is much better. I think they work well together, and if Superman is even half as good as TDK trilogy, I will be very happy.

RamonSuarez - 10/1/2012, 10:57 AM
It was the same criticism I had for the trailer when I saw it.

They are just applying the Batman Begins to Superman.

Its interesting and all...but I hope they have more in store for the character.

Poor Mr. Ecko is buttsore that someone expresses consistent dislike for Nolan's approach to every superhero he wants to touch no matter how different their backstories. Instead he presents false choice fallacies which say that anything different from the lame tired Donner formula is good for the character when its not since Donner got a lot of things wrong about the Superman mythos.

But its OK, I shall continue to shine truth upon the Nolanite propoganda.

@RamonSuarez you're misunderstanding the concept. It's how our world would react to someone like Superman existing in our world. All the aliens, extradimensional entities, metahumans, etc are introduced after he is. He paves the way for a changed world.

If it's not approached like that, then it becomes boring, because if the world was already filled with other aliens and superheroes, then another one coming along would be nothing special. And Superman HAS to be special.

Fair enough ACira.

But that was basically the approach to Batman Begins in terms of how the world would respond to the rise of an exceptional figure.

Hell it was the same premise we saw in Iron Man and Thor.

I just hope its used to actually expand a cinematic universe this time.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 10/1/2012, 11:07 AM
@ManOfSuperguy

Actually, I was just making the same point about Thor and even Batman Begins to a lesser degree - the "real" world responding to the advent of an exceptional figure.

My issue is how far they want to take "naturalistic".

Thor immediately uses the idea of extradimensions to go cosmic in the Avengers.

I read Nolan and Goyer are still fixated on naturalism to the point that they aren't tying their movie to a JLA film.

Notice how all most every comic book movie director will say "We are modelling it after Batman Begins" or we are doing it like "The Dark Knight"

Nobody says "We are going to do it like Iron Man or Thor or The Avengers"

Such is the influence of Nolan...
