Henry Cavill Discusses MAN OF STEEL's Controversial General Zod Moment And Which Storyline He Wants To Adapt

Fans are still finding fault with the decisions made by Zack Snyder in Man of Steel and now Henry Cavill addresses Superman choosing to kill General Zod and reveals where he'd like to take the hero next.

Zack Snyder's take on Superman in Man of Steel was much darker than what moviegoers were expecting and one of the most controversial moments came when the hero chose to snap General Zod's neck in order to stop the Kryptonian villain from murdering an innocent family. Now, during an interview to promote Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Henry Cavill has shared his thoughts on that.

According to the actor, the plan may have been to use that moment to create a more heroic version of Superman; unfortunately, the decision to create a DC Extended Universe brought those to a halt.

"The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, ‘I don't care if it's impossible again, I'm gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.’" That no doubt would have sat a whole lot better with fans.

Unfortunately, Batman v Superman meant "we didn't get the opportunity to show the other side of it, the ‘I'm ready to be Superman now and I'm ready to show the world the best examples’. That's where the joy and glee comes from, and that sense of warmth from the character, which is his real superpower – he makes people believe in themselves. It was a shame because it would've been nice, and it would have been a lovely coupling with the seriousness and the depth of Man of Steel."

While Cavill made it clear that he still isn't sure whether or not he'll get the chance to play Superman again, there is one storyline he seems to be particularly keen on adapting. Describing For Tomorrow as "one of my favourite comic books," he added: "I would definitely like to tell a story like that. There's an opportunity to keep on telling Superman stories, and getting them exactly right. Showing the things like hope and joy and that wonderful power of his to make people believe in themselves."

What do you think about Cavill's remarks? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section.

I feel like it was fairly obvious that was the plan, initially, which is why I never had a problem with that scene.

I do have a problem with them abandoning that in order for them to have Superman not develop as a character at all for most of BvS.

Recently I’ve been thinking they added the right ingredients in BvS, but used them wrong.
Superman should have been the Superman MoS established but they should have had him continue down the same path.
Batman should have been a ruthless vigilante set on taking Luthor down.
Luthor should have been viewed as a good guy by society and more or less everyone but Batman. Batman’s crusade to bring Luthor down should have been what creates the conflict between Batman and Superman.
When Superman finally realizes who Luthor really is, they team up. And yes, they could still have fought Doomsday. Superman could still have died to save the people of the two cities, and Batman’s mission in JL would have been to change his ways in order to continue the work Superman started.

@Philip - Focusing only on the doomsday fight, I really would have loved for there to be an "audience" - its less so them all just fighting doomsday and more so having to fight him while preventing him from hurting innocent people. And I disliked him being killed by a stab - would have much rather seen them fight it out, some debris/smoke blinds the "audience" to the events only for it to clear out and see Doomsday defeated and Superman dead.

@AbidNaga - I remember in the days when I was trying to get into drawing comic books and one of the first bits of advice I was given was to always have an audience as it makes the supers look even larger than life.

Unfortunately in BvS they were too bothered by pointing out that everywhere there was a battle was abandoned.

@Radders - Interesting. But yeah, I feel like they missed the criticism completely regarding the final battle in MoS. I have absolutely no problem with a huge battle taking place in a civilian populated area with tons of destruction, but lets see the hero having to balance fighting the villain while preventing casualties/saving that one person whose about to be killed or something like that. Stuff like that makes the fights 10x more interesting.

A lot of useless drama. I'm alive and well.

@GeneralZod - Last time we saw you, Luthor was bleeding on your junk to make a cave troll baby.
