INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE Director Roland Emmerich Believes Marvel And DC Movies Are Ripping Him Off

Independence Day: Resurgence looks set to be a flop this weekend, but that hasn't stopped director Roland Emmerich from accusing Marvel and DC of ripping off his penchant for big screen mass destruction...

World ending stakes and mass destruction have become a staple of blockbusters, but it turns out Roland Emmerich believes that everything which followed Independence Day in 1996 has basically been stealing from him, particularly superhero movies. There's certainly a case to be made for that being a game changer, but the filmmaker clearly has an extremely high opinion of himself!

"I felt that when I saw some of these Marvel movies or DC movies from Warners," Emmerich tells Loaded of how he believes the superhero genre has been borrowing from his back catalogue. "I felt, ‘oh my God that looks familiar to me’. Why is Superman bashing so many buildings? I was actually warned already by Steven Spielberg that this will happen. He said Independence Day will be the most imitated film of the next 20 years – and he was right. Smart man." Well, that's...egotistical?

There's no denying that the director's work has played a role in inspiring blockbusters, but the big difference is that the vast majority of Marvel and DC adaptations are infinitely better than his work!

Talking more about why he has no interest in the superhero genre, Emmerich added: "Very early in my career I was offered one or two of those, but it’s not my kind of film. I grew up in Germany and we weren’t big on superheroes to begin with – they didn’t work as well as everywhere else in the world. Only now they work very well. I just also felt that I wanted to make my own films. I pride myself to make originals. Even Independence Day: Resurgence is quite original for a sequel because it’s more the continuation of the story." What do you guys think of these comments? Let us know below.

Independence Day was a good fun movie, but don't understand why he suddenly is bringing comic book movies into his interviews?
Maybe he is trying to be a tad controversial on purpose?

@SimplyAz - Just a jealous hack trying to feel better about his weak-ass movies.

I went and saw ID2 (just shows how much a suck summer we are having movie-wise) and it made me laugh...at how bad it is. Lord. This man has no right to criticize anything.

@SimplyAz - You got it. Save your money for something better. My sister-in-law actually walked out after 20 minutes.

I have nothing against big disaster movies but to try and say they are better than something with a plot is just a bit over reaching. The guy's just going for press because what press he IS getting isn't doing his movie any favors.

Yes because Marvel and DC really NEED to copy the masterpiece that was Godzilla '98. Stop kidding yourself, asshat.
