MAN OF STEEL 2: New Details Emerge About Why Warner Bros. Isn't Working On A SUPERMAN Sequel

Despite reports that Henry Cavill is making his return to the DCEU as Superman, there's still no sign of Man of Steel 2. Now, some rumoured new details shed more light on why the sequel is not happening...

Heroic Hollywood (who recently broke the news about the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League) has shared some "insider information" on what the deal is with Man of Steel 2 at Warner Bros.

They report that the studio isn't convinced another Superman movie is wanted right now, and that the hope is having him play supporting roles in upcoming releases will rebuild the character in the eyes of viewers.

"A standalone Superman movie would not be successful at this time," they claim. Perhaps once there's more momentum after playing a supporting role in some successful DC films, there would be more of a chance for a stand-alone film."

Another supposed reason Man of Steel 2 isn't moving forward is potentially down to the recent deal made between J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company and WarnerMedia (which will see Abrams take charge of a number of DC Comics properties, including HBO Max's Justice League Dark).

"If your plan is to attract an A-list filmmaker like J.J. Abrams to direct a property like Superman, they're going to demand to cast who they want in the title role."

All of this should be taken a pinch of salt for now, of course, but it certainly makes sense. Either way, most fans will be happy just getting to see more of Henry Cavill's Superman on the big screen (starting with Justice League on HBO Max next year).

Eh Maybe already back-tracking his incredibly flimsy "scoop" from less than 2 weeks ago. Why do people listen to this guy again?

@Highflyer - I know what ye mean. MOS 2 would be massively successful if done correctly...like a Justice League 1.5. Superman + Supergirl + Martian ManHunter + Shazam vs Brainiac and an appearance by Green Lantern at the end with a view to setting up a GL Corps movie ....somebody TRY and tell me that wouldn't be a success !?!.

Even though I'll admit that Snyder's take wasn't loved by all, this isn't a batman and robin situation where the character needs to be shelved for multiple years.

@TheJustinHammer - Looking that way. It blows my mind.

What exactly that 'that' refer to in the line ''who recently broke that news''?

And WB really has their head in the sand (or in their butts), but there isn't a demand for a Superman movie right now? Comic Book movies are the hottest properties right now. There isn't a better time to give the superhero of all superheroes a movie.

Also, no thanks to JJ directing a Superman movie. JJ is great for giving an impulse to (mainly sci-fi) properties, but for a Superman movie I want a director/writer who has an actual passion for the character (although JJ could be just that, but he hasn't really shown it then in my opinion)

@MalseMarcel - he really doesnt. He was actually working on a superman movie a while ago where krypton was still around and dealt with supes fighting in space a lot.

Yeah like J.J. will be like [frick] CavilL, I won’t do it unless I recast! Not very many people have a problem with Cavill, So much as the material he was given to work with. WB has never really understood the potential they have just by sticking with the comics a little closer.

So first of all only a couple of weeks ago ElMayimbe was saying WB was focusing on Superman again.
That's to say nothing about the fact that this 'scoop' is nothing anyone couldn't deduce logically.

Why are WB not developing a Man of Steel 2?
They don't think it would be successful.
Yeah, no shit! If they thought it would succeed they would develop it. It's a pretty obvious answer with no real insight.

Honestly, I’m mostly surprised that WB doesn’t just recast and move forward as they did with Batman. I agree that a new Cavill-led Superman would be a roll of the dice... General audiences never fully embraced any of his prior entries to the point where they sent a clear signal that they wanted more.

But I’m not sure why they’re so down on the concept of Superman himself. Even if the last 2 screen versions never caught fire, the character has an instant “in” with pop culture. While the announcement of another Cavill entry won’t light a fire in the trades or online (outside of a specific audience), a brand-new take on one of the most famous characters in existence is going to generate a lot of press and interest.

At that point just make a good movie. Those always help.

@Chewtoy - Tbh I'm starting to think that they should let Cavill go and start from scratch to find someone who works better beside Robert Pattinson's batman (I think David Corenswet is the perfect choice imo).

P.S I think Cavill will make a much better James Bond then he ever did a Superman.

@Chewtoy - Exactly.
WB has a chance to reintroduce a brand new Superman set in Matt Reeves Batman.

To be fair, there is some sense to that. Cavill has yet to appear in a critically and financially successful film as Superman. They have all been absolute flops at the box office so far, and are critically reviled.

At least Wonder Woman and Aquaman have had either well received or billion dollar solo outings.

As fine as Cavill may be in the role, from a studio perspective, why would they take a chance with a character who hasn’t appeared in a successful film since 1980.

It takes a certain level of incompetence to not be able to make a billion dollar, critically acclaimed Superman movie and turn the iconic hero into a C list character that the GO doesn't care about.
Theses days, a Rocket and Groot spin-off would make more money than a Superman movie.

@Moriakum - Snyder doesn't give a shit about Superman unlike James Gunn, who actually put care and effort into Rocket and Groot.

WB can suck my dick.
They're the only ones to blame to run this amazing character to the [frick]ing ground with their shitty-ass takes on him.
If you're so unimaginative, just adapt Birthright panel for panel and bam! great Superman movie.

Being a Superman fan is just disappointment over disappointment at this point. And I don't care how many shit on it but Superman in Whedon's Justice League was waaaaay better than anything Snyder did with the character.
