MAN OF STEEL Director Zack Snyder Reveals Why Kal-El Chose Red And Blue Suit Rather Than The Black One

Superman's black suit may not have factored into Justice League, but we did see it in Man of Steel. Now, Zack Snyder has explained why he chose not to don that in the 2013 movie. Check it out...

Shortly before it was announced that Zack Snyder's Justice League is coming to HBO Max next year, the filmmaker held a watch party for Man of Steel which was crammed full of fascinating reveals.

Among the topics covered by Snyder was Clark Kent/Kal-El's decision to don a red and blue Kryptonian costume rather than the traditional black colour worn by his family on their home planet. While this isn't something that's necessarily bugged fans since 2013, the director's answer might just make you look at this moment in a different light during future rewatches.

"The House of El's family suit would be the black suit, but the suit facing out into the public, the suit he says 'you'll help them attain wonders,' that suit is the suit of optimism in my opinion," Snyder explained (via Screen Rant). "The red and blue suit, to me, is more inclusive. It's a friendlier suit."

This is a legitimately very interesting take, and obviously explains why Superman would have been decked out in black upon returning from the grave in 2017's Justice League. That's something Snyder has pretty much confirmed will happen in the "Snyder Cut" on Vero, so now it's hopefully just a waiting game until we get to finally see the iconic superhero don that in the DCEU.

Despite reports that Zack Snyder's Justice League will be a one-off, the hope is that the release of that will open the door to him telling more stories with these characters...hopefully, Superman is among them.

Seeing superman in the black suit is going to be one of the really fun elements of the Snyder cut. We got that tease in man of steel and I was so pissed we didn't get it in Justice League. But now we're finally getting it. Hooray!

@Mrcool210 - but wasnt the scene where he sees the black suit and chooses the red one a Snyder scene? Pretty sure they said that when it was released

@Ha1frican - yeah I'm sure I read that somewhere too. Having said that, with the amount of studio interference Justice League went through, it's certainly possible Snyder originally intended for Superman to actually wear the black suit, and then had to change it so ended up shooting the scene where he chooses the red/blue over the black one.

I’m excited to see the ZS cut of JL, but how much different will be it really?
From everything/most things I’ve read it seems that about 80-85% of the film we got was Zack’s work with 20% at most being stuff that Joss added to essentially tie up loose ends.

@CBMFilmJunkie - I think it is much more expansive in many areas. I think the largest difference is runtime, because Whedon cut it down to two hours and believe that 20% new scenes was just to streamline the movie even more

Took the time to rewatch Man of Steel friday and if you skip the first 30 minutes it is actually becomes a really solid movie (although I do wish they went with the original ending where Superman punched Zod into the Phantom Zone). The suit choice is one of those messages that was pretty clear though in the movie, so I don't see why he should've chosen to wear the black one.

I also finally gave Justice League a chance, and to be honest it is actually a really good movie. But it has the same problem as The Force Awakens in my opinion. It ticks every box for being a good movie, but it doesn't really offer anything new or special beyond that. And if the theatrical cut is any indication, I don't see where the black suit would fit in Snyder's cut.

And for those wondering why I went from MoS to JL and skipped BvS, I didn't. Just after seeing the first ten minutes of BvS I didn't want to sit through another very moody and all-over-place movie

That doesn't really make alot of sense within the context of the movie. At no point did Clark make a conscious decision to the black suit and go with the red and blue suit. in fact, the red and blue suit was just there waiting for him in the spaceship, he had no involvement in its design.
