MAN OF STEEL Star Michael Shannon: "I'm Not A Huge Fan Of Comic Books"

It turns out that the new General Zod doesn't really care all that much for comic books. Hit the jump to hear more about that as well as why dropping a few too many Man of Steel details has landed him in hot water with Warner Bros.

Talking to Hero Complex, Michael Shannon revealed that his openness in the past while talking about playing General Zod in Man of Steel has landed him in hot water with Warner Bros. on more than one occasion. "I got signaled that less is more. It’s kind of curious. It is Superman. So I think everybody kind of knows what happens, you know? Nothing’s going to be a huge shock."

"There are legions of fans salivating, who will literally spend the next year and a half looking at the clock, waiting for this movie," the actor added when talk turned to his foray into the world of comic books and the dedicated fan base which comes with it. "That’s just the way it is. I don’t know why. Me, personally, I’m not a huge fan. I can’t even read comic books. I don’t know which panel to look at next. I hardly ever know what any of the characters are talking about. So, no, I am not one of them. But there are a lot of them. They’re out there. And they really want to talk to me about this movie!"

Not a big deal by any means. While we usually have to endure an actor harping on about how much they love comic books and dropping the names of a few popular story arcs, it's refreshing that Shannon has chosen to be honest about it. Will it make a difference to his performance? Hardly! Not a surprise. Most actors/actresses that get these roles aren't big comic book fans.

I respect him actually, he didn't pander and was honest. Some people just don't read comics. Doesn't mean he's going to do a bad job as Zod. Although I guess he didn't do too much research huh?

As long as he feels passionate towards the character he's playing, that's all i ask. Zod isn't even from the books to start with so it's no hair off my sack if he can't enjoy a comic in his spare time.

@overtappeal Lots of people dont read comics. Doesnt mean they are miserable.

The majority of a CBMs gross comes from people who dont read comics.

Mike ain't the only actor who appears in a comic movie and never read comics so for them, it's like riding a bike.

i can't understand why they used Zod again for a Superman movie. Doomsday or Darkseid would have been alot better and something fresh to the Superman series, just saying?)

I'm not saying he should lie and say he's been a reader all his life, or anything. I just mean, it reads like he's looking down on the industry. Maybe that's just how it reads. He could have meant it differently. Still, he came across dickish.

I'll take his honesty and a solid performance over all those other actors that claim to be fans and end up shitting all over the characters.. at least he knows the gravity of having no clue about it and will give it his best shot

Not a big deal. Good actors are able to inhabit roles of people they know little to nothing about. In fact, that's the mark of a great actor.

I think we put a standard on unknown actors or obnoxious actors (i.e. Mark Wahlberg) to know the source material but for good actors it doesn't really matter. It's a double standard but a rightful double-standard.

This guy's an absolute beast on Boardwalk Empire but I still have a really bad feeling about this movie.

I never thought I'd be more excited for the Avengers than Superman, but somehow I am.

That's it....I'm not watching Superman because he doesn't like comics. I'm not watching TDKR because Superman and Batman are DC characters. I'm not watching Avengers because .......whoa! almost went overboard.
I'M WATCHING AVENGERS!

It's best he don#t read the comics because Superman comic are about the worst written stuff out there.

I'd give him something quality to read like '100 Bullets' or 'Preacher' so he not all comic books are about formulaic recurring tales of super-people in spandex who never age or stay dead. There is mature reader stuff out there that's bloody well written and actually reaches a conclusion!

He's not into comics but is into character acting. This is a good thing. I hope he breathes new life into the character. I really want this movie to be good so that, eventually (in our lifetimes), we can see a good Justice League movie.

At least he knows WE are out here and that WE have power. As long as he's not bashing the people that will be going to see this movie I have no problem with his comments. Just do a good job in the movie and no one will care either way.

It's better than when Halle Berry was doing the first X-Men movie and admitted to not knowing anything about comics and that the only reason she took the role is because there were not a lot of oppurtunities for black actresses in Hollywood at the time. If you can tell, that scarred me.
