MAN OF STEEL Writer On Henry Cavill's Possible Superman Return; Says WB Wanted THE DARK KNIGHT In The DCEU

Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer shares his take on whether Henry Cavill could return as Superman, while confirming Warner bros. hoped to make The Dark Knight Trilogy part of the DC Extended Universe.

The Flash will introduce Sasha Calle's Supergirl, and it's been widely reported that the plan is for the Girl of Steel to receive her own solo movie. A body double was used for Superman's Shazam! cameo, and with no mention of Henry Cavill in Warner Bros.' plans for the DC Extended Universe over the next few years, it seems his time as the iconic DC Comics superhero has reached its end.

When The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer, they asked for his thoughts on Cavill's future as Superman. While he's no longer involved with the DC Extended Universe, he believes there's a chance the actor's tenure as the hero could continue.

"I think so," he said of Cavill's possible Superman return. "I’m not involved in it right now. I’ve heard the same rumors you’ve heard, but I’m not plugged into it. I’ve stepped away almost entirely from comic book-related projects other than Sandman, which I don’t really categorize as part of the normal DC universe. And I’m doing a Batman podcast. I’ve actually done so many adaptations of comics that I needed a break."

Ta-Nehisi Coates is hard at work on a standalone Superman movie that will feature a Black lead, but that's all we know about the hero's big screen future right now.

In the same interview, Goyer teased what could have been a very different DCEU when he confirmed that Warner Bros. did once have tentative plans to have Man of Steel take place in the same world as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy. "Chris always wanted to keep the Dark Knight films as a separate entity and [the studio] kept wanting, understandably, to pull him into a whole DC expanded universe," he explained.

"Chris obviously was a producer on Man of Steel, and it’s tempting to think they were linked, but they really weren’t. I mean, I’m sure one could retroactively do it."

There were once rumblings that Christian Bale was wanted for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but those talks never went very far because the actor only wanted to work with Nolan.

It could have been fun, though, eh?

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah it really wouldn't have made sense. They built TDK series to be too realistic, for one.

But also, story-wise, it wouldn't hvmave made sense. If they wanted Bruce Wayne, which I'm sure they would have, then they would have either had to have the DCEU take place before TDKR. Either that, or after TDKR and had Bruce come out of retirement. Which would go against that whole ending and cheapen that series.

The only other answer would have been to have "Bat-Robin" be the Batman in the DCEU, and that would have been ridiculous.

@CorndogBurglar - yes, all of this.

Nolan’s Batman wouldn’t cut it in the DCEU too. Among aliens and demigods. He would be DOA.

Apparently he didn't hear about the black lead superman movie they're working on. With that announcement, there are really only 3 possibilities for Cavill coming back.

1) its a different character in that universe. This would still require wb to wait until a trilogy of the new superman to get through or the movie to fail for us to start getting cavill lead movies though since they wouldn't want to get the two franchises confused.

2) this superman film fails. This is the situation that will get us cavill back asap, but it's also implying both cavill and wb being willing to after all the shenanigans that happened here.

3) they decide to go back to basics after the new series ran its course. But even then cavills superman isn't popular enough for something like this to build interest the same way Keaton is returning as batman.

Only other possibility is him just appearing as cameos, but no one wants to see that

@Origame - or the superman film with the black lead will be set in matt reeves universe...which i believe is "earth-2", which will still leave the door open to cavill's superman returning....not to mention "the flash" is gonna be a game changer in terms of characters

@comics4life - what you have to understand is that wb won't release another superman movie while they have a superman out there. Even with all the batmen in the flash, it's specifically with the precedent that it's a flash movie, and both interpretations are retiring. Sure, we could get him occasionally in crossovers. But on top of the fact wb has mentioned they're moving away from the cinematic universe model, his role would be limited since they're gonna push the new black superman. Plus, making the black superman announcement on cavills birthday is a pretty clear announcement that they're done with him.

@Origame - Maybe black Superman will be better than Cavill and we won't want him back anymore? Was that an option..?

@GwenLantern - not given the writer and the obvious agenda. Also, I'm talking from the perspective of us ever getting a cavill superman again, and the notion of this new superman being successful was covered by my point of an entire trilogy of said character.

There’s just no way TDK’s Batman could work in an expanded universe of DC characters. Nolan got as close as you could get to making a Batman who exists in the real world, so he’d be killed instantly the second aliens and monsters show up

The REAL reason WB was frustrated with Snyder. He gambled on his insane dark vision and squandered the good will from the most successful DC superhero franchise. It has cost this company BILLIONS!!!!!
