Why MAN OF STEEL was a good movie

This movie gets tons of hate for no reason... but whats so bad?

It seems Marvel has taken over cinema since avengers, adn this has been bad for other blockbuster franchises, and DC Entertainment. Last summer DC took their shot at a shared universe starting with Man of Steel. Many fans thought it was way to dark and not good at all. Here is why I think Man of Steel IS a good movie.

First off, Man of Steel offers a different, darker take on Superman. Im not saying darkeris better, but it is something different from boring old happy Supes. It is also the first time ive seen A live action Superman punching someone in stunning CGI. That brings me to another complaint with fans: The destrution of Metropolis.
Sure, it was a lot of damage, but you have to remember this is Superman's first time fighting someone with power that matches him.He has no experience fighting people like Zod, so damage should be expected. Now, after the destructive fight sequence there is another gripe with fans: Zod's death. This is probably the most argued topic about the movie. KI dont agree with Superman killing him, but during the fight with Zod Superman didnt have any rules about killing. Even if he did, how would Superman stop Zod? Zod is combat trauined and is strong than Supes. Snapping Zod's neck was pretty much his only option.

Anyway, ill be doing this with some other CBMs if you liked this article. Im kinda bad at article writing, so if you have any advice or improvements i could make pour it out in the comments.

I agree with the point that this is truly Supes first time actually FIGHTING at all! He has never truly punched someone until Zod & Goons appear. Ofc there is carnage! Give a toddler super-strength and see what happens. Same prospect.

The main problem with MOS is...it hardly resembled the Superman of the prior 75 years. MOS was a great launching pad for an Earth-Three movie, though.

It wasn't horrible or a that bad movie, it was just very dissapointing one.

Without writing paragraphs about this film, I'll just leave it at this: On the surface, everything about the film seems phenomenal. The soundtrack is incredible, the CGI is flawless, the action is 10 times better than anything we've ever seen in a Superman movie.

But once you look below the surface at the characters, how they're written, how they act, the themes the movie tries to portray...it's an awful mess. The character we see in the movie just isn't Superman, in any way, shape, or form. Forget about the Donner films. He just isn't a good guy who's supposed to inspire hope or optimism in us. That's my take on it.

Well said @sauronsbane1.

I still personally enjoyed it though. I don't get all the hate either, but then again I'm not a Superman fanatic either. How it was depicted is what made me want to watch it bc yes his prior adaptations have been lame.com, I dug it and it is visually stunning.

Sauron basically said it. the film doesnt really say anything. Its trying to but the visuals take over the actual theme. Its not awful but its really not that great. Its not on the level of Batman Begins at all. Thats the other issue. Its trying to be Batman Begins instead of a Superman film.

I actually LOVED MoS...I'm a major MCU fan, but MoS and Thor 2 were my fav cbms last year, followed by Wolverine and IM3 (I still enjoyed IM3 tons, but know I'm in the minority here) but who cares, you like what you like, I'll like what I like, ha,ha...think that's ultimately the point of movies...

Good job, be little careful with the typos, cap letters where they should and shouldn't be, etc...

Also, the first comment of this article will probably disarm people so they won't be too harsh, good to see another on cbm with a sense of humor and don't take themselves (or their articles) too seriously)...

The most frustrating thing about the hate that this movie gets is that it mostly comes from Marvel trolls and it doesn't deserve it. Once the critics gave the film bad reviews, every marvel troll jumped on board and started hating on the film, until it became the standard for which most people criticize the film. But the funny thing about all of this is that those same critics also gave Superman Returns and The Dark Knight Rises really good reviews. Which are films that Marvel trolls like to hate on as well. But the most hypocritical thing about all of this is that, Marvel trolls still like to cling on to the critics when it comes to Marvel films. But when it comes to DC, they let go of the critics and they suddenly become free thinkers.

Also, like The Mandarin reveal in IM3, the Metropolis destruction scene wasn't the film's downfall (conceptually at least).

As weak as the film's writing was, that scene just worked. I got teary eyed listening to that closing monologue.

Ask any non-fan of comic books or CBMs what they thought of MOS.
It's not about trolls or whatever.

Psh, get the f*ck out of here. Superman has killed before in the comics, its time you mainstream fans got over it. Puss!es!

Exactly how I feel about it now.

@MarkOfTheDemon

You're a blind troll and literally just fit in what you've heard been complained over in MOS. I just wanted a little more personality and character development, that's all. I'm fine with leaving that Superman in the 70's. It was good for it's time.

Nevertheless, it wasn't Cavill's fault, he was just handed a bad script.

I could watch this movie all day every day. I loved it.

To those who hated the movie or were just slightly disappointed. There's nothing in The Man of Steel that prevents the next one from giving you the Superman you wanted. Towards the end of the movie Superman's interaction with Gen. Swanwick reflected a more sunnier, optimistic Superman. There were other glimpses. The exchange between Lois and Superman before taking off to destroy the world engine was another moment. Maybe more time should have passed, allowing Clark time to fully explore his powers and his heritage. Giving us a more self assured Kal-El by the time he encounters Zod, Faora and Nam-ek.

I think had they presented that version from the moment he put on the suit or shifted the tone with one scene or two during the battle of Metropolis. How sweet would it have been if they used that moment where the building was toppling over to display the lengths to which Kal-El would go to save human kind. Showing him either slowing or preventing the building from falling giving people below the time to get clear. An awesome display of power. The swelling music that was used when Superman saved the guy falling from the military copter would have been perfect for that moment. Giving people a reason to cheer this new champion who fights on behalf humanity. In addition to seeing him battle Zod and his army.

There are some people in the audience who need to be explicitly shown people avoiding death and destruction. The Gas Station scene while reckless could have included someone seeing Superman and Zod speeding towards them and getting people out before the explosion. Me on the other hand I need to be explicitly shown the dead or the dying. It's the Schroeder's cat in the box scenario. It all depends upon the observer. Was someone in that building when it collapsed? Was someone in that gas station when it exploded? Whatever the answer may be is valid. It all depends on the observer.

Would those key changes make the movie better for those who were disappointed?
JosephKing
JosephKing - 3/28/2014, 7:30 PM
The gas station was empty, at least the movie strongly implies it when they show the wideshot of the explosion. It's one of those moments when you just believe nobody got hurt, every super-hero movie has that (and I mean EVERY super-hero movie has that, The Dark Knight Trilogy has tones of moments like that, Avengers too. But we just believe nobody died because... well, what's the point of believing someone died?).

Now, during the battle in Metropolis the movie is very clear about people dying, it actually shows people dying, so it's not a matter of opinion. I just think it would be fake to pretend that Superman could've done something like slowing down a collapsing building to save people. I mean, he can't do that, it's physically impossible considering the nature of his powers in this version.
Prime

The downfall of the movie was Goyer's script. Not the destruction or Zod's death. Complaining about that is stupid.

Just be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it and a lot of people did in MOS.

People Forget that in the 1980 movie Superman killed Zod,
and then LAUGHED about it with lois. literally. look it up if you dont believe me.

At least this movie showed a superman with remorse for DELIBERATELY (keyword here) taking someone's life. one of his kind at that, who are near extinction.

As for the city, im sure he didn't mean for other people to get hurt.
but it could have been worse, the whole planet could have been terra formed, and then billions would die.

Did I mention that he has been superman for less than 24 hours? Experience wasn't on his side.

@MisterMoustache

I saw no such wide shot as you describe. The gas station scene does not clearly show it empty or occupied. We left to believe that the writers intentions were not to imply a horrific death for whoever was inside. I base that upon the tone of the scene and Superman reactions in the aftermath of the explosion.

Mainly I saw soldiers dying in the battle of Metropolis. All other deaths could be implied depending upon what one chooses to believe.

Have they fulling established the full extent of Superman's powers and limitations? We are talking about a Superhero movie. Why would he not be able to slow down at the very least the fall of the building? As long as he holds it up at the right structural stress point. It shouldn't be a problem for Supes.
JosephKing
JosephKing - 3/28/2014, 9:54 PM
@FarkinA

0:23 mark. Nobody's around the gas station, with the exception of one dude, but he runs away unharmed. Now, of course someone could just choose to believe that there was someone inside the car or something like that, but then again, nobody just chooses to believe that Batman is crippling police officers when he flips over their cars during chases, just like nobody wants to believe that Thor and Hulk were killing civilians when they knocked down the Leviathan. That's a minor genre convention that requires a little bit of suspension of disbelief.

The battle of Metropolis was a total different thing, though. When Zod starts terraforming Earth, we see people running and buildings crushing them, so the movie establishes that civilians are dying there, there's no space for personal interpretations.

About Superman's powers, just remember the oil rig scene, when he struggles to hold the structure. A building is not like that, is way bigger and made of concrete, he's too small to hold something like that. It's a matter of balance.
Pedrito
Pedrito - 3/28/2014, 10:28 PM
Huh wut?
Whether the movie was a letdown or not has very little to do with Zod or civilians getting killed.
Let's just move on.

Yeah MOS was a good movie, it should have been much more though...

Epic, awesome, so much more...

Wont go into all the plot holes and Bay explosions or Superman not caring for human life when all this is happening. Lois knowing Clark's Superman before he actually is Superman was plain stupid and wrong, if its that easy no way he'd have a secret identity for very long, but main reason it didn't have the magic of a Superman movie, just felt it was another comic book movie and SUPERMAN should be so much more, if they don't care about all the characters why would we?

The forgettable score says it all too, its like making Star Wars or Jaws without the real score, you just don't do it, it wasnt even that good.

Still, didn't feel like the Superman we all know and love just a New 52'ish copy.
