Why Superman: Man of Steel Will Be Great

Why we need to stop forgetting about Superman: Man of Steel, and pay more attention to this promising franchise!

When you think of superheroes, you think of Superman. The red cape, super strength, ability to fly, and plenty others make Superman the most influential and recognized superhero of all time. Although we have seen Superman on screen 5 times, this upcoming reboot directed by Zack Snyder will change Superman’s legacy forever. Produced by the superhero directing genius himself, Christopher Nolan (“Batman Begins”, “The Dark Knight”), there is no doubt that the “Man of Steel” will be one for the ages. Even with its star-studded cast of Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon and others, it really has not gotten to public praise and publicity it should. Of course with “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and “The Dark Knight Rises” coming out so soon (The Avengers is obviously already out), its hard to gain a spot. But still, as these movies are released, and the superhero genre expands even more, it is right about that time to start getting PSYCHED on “Man of Steel.”

Relating back to what I discussed in the previous paragraph, there are some reasons why “Man of Steel” is not getting as popularized as it should. The main reason is due to the various huge superhero movies coming out right now. While us CBMers were getting so excited for those films, we practically forgot about Superman. “The Dark Knight Rises” is making people so excited, what else other movies can possibly compete? But, as that July 20th release date gets closer and closer, I expect the popularity of Superman to rise, and rise, and rise. The Superman madness will begin soon, and with a possible teaser trailer in front of The Dark Knight Rises, you will see a huge shift in attention that will focus directly on Man of Steel.

A key reason to get excited for Man of Steel has to begin with the behind the scenes management. Knowing that the CBM “mega-god” Christopher Nolan is producing this sends chills down my neck. With his success and brilliance in the Batman franchise, its hard to imagine the wonders he can do with Superman. Although he is not directing, you still have to love just his activity in the movie. You know the script and plot will be on point, and the people who he asked to star and be involved are perfect. Nolan showed his excellent ability as the role of producer for this film when you heard who was directing it. Zack Snyder, the famous director notable for his film achievements in “300” and “Watchmen,” (another revered DC comic film) is the perfect choice to direct this film. Unlike in the past Superman movies, Snyder has the ability to give a darker, bloody, fighting Superman. Never seen before, imagine Superman kicking some serious ass with his fists and other powers? It’s unbelievable to even imagine the 300 and Watchmen style fighting being implied into Superman. The experience will be unreal. I am sure Nolan and Snyder will make a huge impact in the success of this film.

Nolan and Snyder can create the building blocks for this awesome film, but the cast will be the defining piece. First off, Henry Cavill is Superman. The original selection for “Superman Returns,” there is no better option than Cavill. The look, the body, the personality, Cavill has it all. I have no doubts that his performance will be impecable, and I have that feeling that after the film is loved by the critics and fans, people won’t say Cavill played Superman, people will say Cavill IS Superman. Besides the perfection of Cavill has Superman, the Man of Steel has an impressive cast that not only have the perfect past acting experience, but the right look and attitude.
Lois Lane is portrayed by Amy Adams, who is beautiful, outgoing, and brings life to the bring screen. Her personality will exploit the true Lois Lane that in my opinion, hasn’t really been acted to perfection in the past. Amy Adams will bring that journalist, smart look that is needed when finding Superman/Clark Kent’s romance partner. Cavill and Adams will find that chemistry that will set this couple apart from previous superhero film partners.

General Zod is the perfect villain to help establish a new, darker Superman franchise up again. His past with Superman’s family and people makes a great plot. Michael Shanon, the oscar nominated actor, has the edgy, dark, and villainous tone that will make General Zod a force to be reckoning with. After his great performance as Zod, people won’t even able to compare him and Terrance Stamp’s Zod from the original Superman’s because they’ll just be so different. A violent, smart General Zod establishes the perfect villain for Superman to face.

The rest of the Man of Steel’s supporting cast is nothing short of spectacular. His kryptonian birth father, Jor-El, is being played by the one and only Russell Crowe. One of the most popular and greatest actors of the recent decade, Crowe will play the perfect father of Superman. It is impossible to believe there will be any flaws in Crowe’s performance. His adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, is being played Kevin Costner. Yes, that actor from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and more, will give that supportive, leading father that will define Clark as he gets older and learns to use his powers. Again, a great actor with a great role. Diane Lane, who is playing Marth Kent, is just another example of the excellent cast of this film. I am sure Lane will play a great mother to Clark, and will be just another piece to this big puzzle. Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van (Superman’s birth mother), Antje Traue as Faora, and others, this cast is truly remarkable, and will play a huge part in making this movie the success I believe it will be.

It is clear that I have high expectations for this movie, and after all of the points I have stated, I feel that they will be met. Superman will be seen like no before, and as the release comes closer and closer, its time to get PSYCHED, EXCITED, AND PUMPED for this movie.

If you want to started spreading the excitement for Superman: Man of Steel (2013), don't be afraid to hit the THUMBS UP (Y) button.

I for one hope DC/WB loses the rights to Superman to the creator's estates and that they take the rights to Marvel, the House of Ideas can do the character justice.

dude, clearly every single Superman comic that you own has pages stuck together. Dark, violent, superman? really? im excited about the man of steel. i hope its great. i really do. but superman is NOT the dark knight. its easy to portray batman as a dark, violent man. scarred and damages. with superman thats a bit harder. ill say this, the foundation is there, his planet was destroyed, hes an alien in every sense of the word (stranded on a far away planet, by himself, i can see him having some anger issues). but to try and sell that version of superman to the general public is a tall order. i trust nolan and i like the director and the cast but there is a very fine line they have to walk with this movie. there has to be a balance. i want to see superman and zod have a battle that literally levels metropolis, because i think that if two beings that were that powerful faught then a city leveling battle would be the least of the collateral damage. with that said if they go TO dark and TO violent it will turn people off.

The silence really is just from the fact that the film is already done shooting, is still over a year away from release, and that there are 3 other major CBMs between now and then.

Once the trailers and magazine articles and new stills start coming around, we'll all start focusing on it a lot more.

I'm excited, I just don't want to torture myself because its still a whole year away lol :p

But on another note, get off Nolans lap. He's good, but I think he would be creeped out if he saw they way you were talking about him.

Man of Steel is not forgotten. It's just been ignored by the watered down marvelite buttboys who keep speaking about the avengers when the movie itself was very good popcorn CBM flick. But in time, it will emerge.

Am I a bad guy if I don't think Cavill is the "perfect" Superman when I haven't seen the film yet? I will NEVER go as far as to say he IS Superman, that honor belongs to Christopher Reeves alone. People change their opinions all the damn time. Remember when everyone said Toby IS Spiderman now it's Andrew IS Spidermam? Please, Cavill might do justice to THIS VERSION of Superman but not a soul will ever replace the all American Man of Steel played by Christopher Reeves. Period.

We'd hear more if they snuck a preview in front of any of the current superhero movies.
As for your points, good opinions well explored.

I beg to differ per Crowe: he is a decent to possibly good actor. He won't screw it up. He just won't be Brando to Cavil's Reeve. That's the problem. Comparisons will always be made to Donner's film.

I like Costner. I think he's a good Midwest-seeming guy. You should hope he's more John Schneider a la "Smallville" than anyone else.

I will refrain my opinion per Adams. Hoping for the best, while not expecting too much.

Last issue for me is the costume. So far it's just okay. No matter the mood of the film, Supes should always be reasonably brightly garbed.

Why do we have a new Superman movie? We can thank the Siegel and Shuster estate for taking Warner Bros to cape and putting the squeeze on them.Warner Bros not wanting to be sued by the two families and owing them money, chose instead to make the Superman movie.

This is a new different Superman.Dc comics version of a 21 century Superman. The story might be darker and so this Superman wears darker shades of red and blue to reflect the mood.

Nobody is ignoring Man of Steel. There just isn't much to go off right now. We have no teaser or anything. There hasn't been any major news for a while either. It's hard to be hyped for something that's so intangible when we're in the middle of what is possibly the greatest summer for comic book movies ever.

If DC is smart, they'll release a teaser with no footage along with TDKR. Like the mysterious first teaser for TDK. Start building the hype with the general audiences. Make sure to include the fact that Nolan is involved. It would get people talking.

Yeah, gotta agree with the the majority opinion here... It's not that nobody's excited for Man of Steel, its just that its still a year away so we have very little news, pics, info etc... Also, the general public know even less than us fans do. We can see TV spots, trailers and posters for Avengers, Spiderman, TDKRises, Prometheus etc popping up everywhere, but nothing for 'Supes. Dont worry man, give it a couple of months and the excitement will build as the promotion starts to kick in.

I agree with everything except Cavill. Did you see that speech he gave in Immortals? He sounded like a stupid little Oxford gimp-boy.
I'd choose Brandon Routh over Cavill, too. The only reason they didn't bring him back is because they wanted to completely sever all ties withh the original series as they could

I am far more excited that Snyder is involved than Nolan. This is hopefully going to be Action, something Nolan is all right at, but hardly a master of. And to call him a CBM god, when the only charactor he personally tackled was Batman, and then he only borrowed bits and pieces from the source materials to create his own world, is a little gratuitous.

i've never really been a superman fan. he's always been too much of a boy scout (an organization that i was not nor ever will be associated with). he's always seemed too powerful, too good. some may consider this sacriligous but i was never really a fan of the movies with reeves either. always been more of a batman fan myself and his "gray" vision of the world surrounding him.
but, to be honest, i am interested in this movie. i am hoping that snyder and nolan really present a compelling story. hopefully we'll get a more compelling superman; one with some angst. and quite frankly, i want something that really no superman movie has given us previously and that is a super-powered, knock-down-drag-out, kryptonian brawl between supes and zod. a real "barn-burner" as JR would call it. just a raw, flying fist fight between the two that levels buildings and knocks holes in the ground. something more, pardon the phrase, "realistic" to what a fight between two suped up superhumans would be.
Bumble
Bumble - 5/23/2012, 1:07 PM
oh, and then maybe end up with the hulk popping in, grabbing both by their legs, swinging thing from one side to the other and then stepping on them. and as he walks off snort and say, "hmmm, puny dc."

"immortals" had a very corn-ball script.

it had it's moments, but very very thin.

cavill and john hurt really did what they could. i can't hold it against cavill, when i watch "immortals" i think : 'thats superman... right there..."

it's certainly going to have more ACTION than SR, and in two hours it could possibly have the angstyness of smallville.

I have a feeling this movie is going to be epic because I think Zack Snyder is a good CBM director and I love his vision. Then of course there is Nolan producing it which is fantastic. Also people will compare this to teh Original movies but this movie will kick the crap out of the Donner ones.

@CAPTIN DC FAIR PLAY TO YA MATE, we are in a world where everyone voices their negative opinion on the net e.g. the polls where you choose if a movie will suck with having no potion to say that it wont, this is a very refreshing article and it is great to see people being so positive about this

super excited for this, i love the new look of the last son of krypton, and its about time Hollywood did some justice for such an iconic character, the best move was to get rid of the silly red trunks, i mean come on wearing your under wear on the outside? really? it doesn't appeal and in this day and age i think it looks"faggy", "outdated" and frankly "super silly" come roll on 2013 i have faith in Snyder!

You shouldn't look a Cavill from the Immortals but from the Tudors, the TV show that made his name, he is awesome and although when you look at him you don't think 'Superman', he has buffed up and in the costume looks the real deal

there have been plenty of SH*t superman films/tv/cartoons WITH red trunks so, the absence thereof does NOT a goof movie make.

anyone who thinks the red trunks are/were a problem needs a head exam.

It definitely will be an interesting take on the Superman mythos. I guess a lot of people don't realize this, but early in the DC comics, supe's was portrayed as a more brooding type of hero. If you look at all of the early illustrations of Superman, he always appeared frowning while Batman always had a smirk... Plus in those early comics, even if Superman wore a strange/goofy costume that in my opinion didn't hide his identity that well (many strong men in circus shows wore a similar costume), his actions were nothing boyscout-ish; he was a vigilante that had no problem implementing a lot of physical pain to corrupt politicians, wife beaters, ect. so I guess what I'm trying to say is that this more serious tone that's being applied into the Superman film is really nothing new.
superan
superan - 5/27/2012, 9:39 PM
@TheManOfSteel1013- I feel the same way about the new costume, but hopefully in time it'll grow on us Superman fans. At least they retained the red, blue and yellow subtractive primary color schemes; I was checking out the old concept art for Tim Burton's rendition of Superman and couldn't help but cringe a bit... thank goodness. In any case, with films such as th Avengers and the Dark Night, it's no doubt that movie makers are finally getting cbm's right. Besides Superman 1 and the Rocketeer, most of the comic book movies before 2000 felt a bit campy
