Zack Snyder - "My Superman will be different"

Zack Snyder has stated that his Superman movie will be "different" from previous Man of Steel films, there will be no General Zod and its too early to say if the film will follow Supermans early years...

It seems that Zack Snyder has taken a leaf out his producer Chris Nolan's book when it comes to giving cryptic answers. He has even gone as far as to rule out a villain as Nolan did just last week.

Digital Spy reports on an interview with Empire:

"It's a different story," Snyder said. "I won't say there's a break from the canon or anything like that, but there is definitely an approach that makes you go, 'Okay, that's a way to get at it.'"

He continued: "David is very respectful of the canon and stuff like that. It has its roots in the canon and again, like I say, it has a point of view about who he is. I'm being cryptic, I know, but it's the best I can do."

Asked if his movie will track the Man of Steel's early years, Snyder replied: "I think it's early to say. I don't know."

The director also described rumours of the comic book hero facing General Zod as "just wrong", adding that "the internet has no idea what's going on".

Seems that the early years story line has just been well and truly blown out the water. Also, I can't help but be slightly offended that 'we have no idea what's going on', he is right - but I still don't like being told that!

Nice find Hovis5818! I'm not really sure whether "different" is either a good or bad thing! The movie being different from the classic Donner and crappy Singer ones is 100% essential IMO. They'll upset a lot of people if it's too different though...take The Dark Knight for example. Heath Ledger was undoubtedly brilliant as the Joker, but some people hate just how different an interpretation of the character it was! A loose adaptation of "Birthright" with a Nolan/Snyder feel to it would be ideal.

@ JoshW - I agree, Snyders style is fantastic IMO, but will it really fit in with Superman? Will he have to change his style to suit it? And if he does will it work? We shall see!

@JoshW yeah i agree with you dude they should use birthright and johns secret origin as inspiration, i think that would be the perfect mix IF there going the superman year one route

MAN OF STEEL's better, but though, as long as its not based on that new TWILIGHT SUPER BS thats just came out, either or and's all good!

Lmao @ Josh calling Singers movie crappy, but loving Smallville!

Super kid and not throwing a punch was crap agreed, but the rest of RETURNS is [frick]ing awesome and a billion times better than most of the last 4 seasons of SMALLVILLE!

SMALLVILLE now is just an INSULT, hurts me to say that because when it first started it was amazing!

Still I'm more DC guy than MARVEL so DC has got to be better quality wise!

Hopefully Zack's will be fantastic... just like the epic WATCHMEN!!!

@ hovis5818

good work,mate.

the avengers & superman man of steel are the two films i'm most looking forward to in 2012.

as for different i hope he means fighting a proper superman villain that he can punch different.

& not meaning different like smallville different because that would really piss me off.

HAWKS @ Agreed, we don't want another SMALLVILLE!

Actually, kinda hoping they'll skip an ORIGIN in this and just get to SUPERMAN!

Flashbacks only.

@ leee777

same as you in 2011 as well, thor looks really promising.

the green lantern i need a trailer but i think it being the star wars of comic book movies has got me pumped up.

it would of been x-men first class but with all the alterations to the actual storyline i.e original five & it should of been a reboot.

i just think f*ck fox & f*ck x-men fist ass.

Hopefully, this is a sign that we're not going to waste time on Superman's younger years, when he was "just starting out" as the Man of Steel. It's been done. Let's see a seasoned and experienced crime fighter matching wits with a foe that is truly worthy of Superman's talents and powers. Let's just jump right in, showing Superman beating a minor villain to set the stage, and then bring on a real heavyweight like Brainiac or Darkseid.

I'm also glad to hear a further refutation of the Zod rumors. I'm a big fan of the General (as if you couldn't guess, seeing my avatar here), but he's been done. Let's try something really crazy and do a villain that has never appeared in a movie before.

Like I said on the Sucker Punch article:

I want to see a Superman closer to the animated series/Justice League Unlimited than the Reeve/Donner Supes we've had on the big screen.

@LEEE - You're more a DC guy?!!! Never would've guessed it. Surprised to see Superman Returns & awesome in the same sentence coming from you. But i do kinda agree with your whole comment. (though i would replace awesome with ok IMO)

I think a great idea since everyone knows his origin story for this movie would be to do the first film with him battling doomsday, and have monolog memories of his past with ie lois and other tie ins, and do the second film with the 4 supermen from the 90s comic, and his resurection in the third. Anybody?
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 11/4/2010, 6:43 AM
Leee: If we have to have an origin in this film, why not do it like it was done in The Animated Series, where the basic origin story was shown in the opening credits?

Hawks: I also hope they don't stray too far from canon.

Joshzilla - 11/4/2010, 6:43 AM
Snyder would be the perfect guy to do an epic doomsday superman battle.

What are people so worried about for?!?!?! 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch!!! The style is the same and definitely fits with Superman. You bet your ass it will be different! But he means "different from the past films" WHICH COULDN'T BE A BETTER THING!!! Those 80ies films are so horribly bland for our day and age. I thank god every day for owning the series of Lois & Clark! [frick] i can't wait for people to altogether ditch their Reeve safety blankets and embrace Snyder & Nolan's NEW wave of marvevlous Superman Adventures!

@ comicb00kguy - You always seem to post stuff I'm thinking lol. I was just gonna post his origin should be in the crdits (a la The Incredible Hulk).

Still not sold on the choice of director, but I trust Nolan to keep Snyder in line.

I reckon you're villains are gonna be Lex and Braniac.

@Shaman- You're a good man, brotha! :) I love the Reeve movies for what they are, and as many of you can attest to, I've defended Superman Returns on more than one occasion, but I am soooooo ready for something new and fresh for Kal-El, the last son of Krypton.

@tea- If I had Superman's cock of steel, I'd smash boulders with it to impress the ladies! :D

I don't think being different is bad after thirty years of one damn vision on film it would be nice to see something else.

As long as it is far from the some of the takes from Jon Peters and JJ Abrams and even the Donner Movies it might have a chance.

I love those films too, hell i grew up on them. But it is HIGH time to move on... DRASTICALLY! And i'll be damned if Snyder ain't the absolute perfect pick to pull it off with gusto :)

Just wish WB would get their act together! ; P

ComicB00kGuy @ Awesome idea dude, that would so work!

DP @ Hellz yeah buddy, 100%!

Xenix @ Dude, its still catered for the Twilight crowd, and cool for comics but it should not be touched on in this movie lol.

The problem with reinventing Superman (again) is that it's already been tried. Superman Returns was a failure. C'mon, whatever happened to 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'? I'm not saying go back and follow Donner's work, but don't reinvent the wheel! Different can make great results, but it's still a fine line.

I think they should just make the movie. Forget about the back story because we already know it. They should start it off with a bang. the first scene of him saving somebody from falling off a building. that'll set the tone for the rest of the movie. (Jon Hamm)!

A Blade4040 - Donner's "crappy" light hearted comedy crap??? In case you're not up to scratch on what (the majority of) people consider crap; Catwoman was crap, Blade 3 was crap. Superman The Movie is one of the all time best CBM's. Extremely popular to this day.
Also, Superman is generally supposed to be lighthearted and comedic. If you want something dark, you've got Batman, (or if bad film making is you're thing, there's always Watchmen).
Other than that, I agree with you about the kid in SR.

RyKnow- Superman's CONCEPT should be "lighthearted and comedic" not the plot of the film. I think that's more along the lines of what BLADE4040 meant, to which i HIGHLY agree.

Srtick to your guns Blade4040. I'm so sick and tired of hearing everyone chanting the praises of Donner. I loved Superman: The Movie when it came out, but even back then as a kid, I could pick out all the flaws in the storyline. IMO Gene Hackman was the worst Luthor ever. Too much comedy to be taken seriously.
