MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN: Why Lois Learned Clark's Secret So Quickly

A major trope of the Man of Steel's mythos is his trying to stop Lois Lane from uncovering his true identity, but in the animated series My Adventures with Superman she learns it in episode 4. Why?

Recently, the Superman Homepage featured a live video interview with show producer Josephine Campbell, and we were able to call in to directly ask her a question, which was regarding why the decision was made to have Lois figure out the truth so early in the show's run. "There's sort of two decisions with that," Campbell responded. "And one is, it was actually a plot point that we had during our pitch. [Producers] Brendan Clougher and Jake Wyatt had come up with it, which is that this show is My Adventures with Superman, which is just as much Lois and Jimmy as it is Superman. So, for us, getting them together as a team and actually finally having them all on the same side, all in on the secret, was something that was important to us.

"It was something that is different than a lot of Superman media," she elaborated. "She never finds out until the very last episode, or Jimmy never finds out at all. So it's another way to say this is our different take on Superman. This is getting rid of some of these tropes. I think Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman has that scene with their time traveler who's, like, 'You have to be the dumbest woman in the world not to know this.' Our Lois is whip smart, so, for us, it also fed so well into the rom-com part of our show, which is secrets and lies are a thing that destroys relationships, or stops them before they even grow. So this is a huge one. Doesn't mean that there's not going to be more secrets or more lies — there's still going to be some secrets and lies going on, because they're in their 20s. But for us, it was different. It was showing how smart Lois was."

There was also the fact that it seemed like a strong way to expand on their relationship and for the series and the characters to grow beyond the bits audiences have seen before, while providing the opportunity to truly see them operating as a team.

"Now," Campbell enthuses, "they're in on helping Superman keep his secrets. And the other thing is that with these being shorter streaming seasons, it used to be you get 26 episodes at like 24 minutes in the '90s. Now, honestly, it's 21 minutes and 30 seconds and you never know if you're gonna get anymore. This is the approach I took to writing Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which I was head writer of. And the approach I took as head writer of She-Ra: Princess of Powerwhich was, 'Maybe we'll get more seasons, maybe not. Let's do what feels right for this story.' And Jake and Brendan were wholeheartedly the ones who were, like, 'This makes sense to us. This makes sense for them. Let's go for it.'"

I enjoyed the show, and will continue watching, but I think each episode was just a true tight 20-25 minute story which I didn’t like. We live in an age of Invincible, I think they could have had some episodes go longer to give some breathing room tbh

@DannRamm113 - I would truly love if they expanded more episode runtimes like Invincible. I feel as though it allowed the episode plotlines to fully breathe and at the same time leave you full enough for a wait for the next week.

@DannRamm113 - Isn’t that because it airs on TV?

Lois and Clark have been married for so long in the comics and have a family. There is really no need to spend much to any time on the whole ‘she doesn’t know he’s Superman’ thing as far as I’m concerned. Superman and Lois has shown the family dynamic is far more interesting at this point

@Twenty23Three - That's a really GREAT point.

Yeah tbh i don't think Clark gaslighting Lois and Jimmy for 4-5 seasons would be as endearing as it was back in the day. Most if not all modern Superman has Lois fall in love with Clark first, which imo is for the best. Anyway this is a fun show, a little rushed but still surprised how much i loved Quaid as Superman.

Maybe in the past it was different. But now it's so played out.

Both Smallville and man of steel had lois learn about Clark's secret before he even formally became superman. And the cw versions of superman (which is technically 2) had the story jump to post them married so she just knows his identity.

Hell, the comics have long since had that as the new status quo for the characters.

If anything it'd be more original to just keep the dynamic as the classic and have her trying to find out his identity.

@Origame - I liked the Smallville approach. They play dumb around everyone else but she’s actually helping him maintain the secret identity thing.

Love the show. And really liked how they treated the characters as smart people. In real life Lois and Jimmy would figure out Clark is Superman pretty quickly if they were spending alot of time with him.

The story in this is pretty good, but the total garbage Japanese anime look is just terrible.

I tried. Gave it 1 episode, but, um.. yea. Not good.

First episode was fun but I’m not sure I’ll continue. Maybe if my daughter was a little older and into it I would watch it but I have a hard time getting into a lot of animation stuff.

I mean, it's definitely for younger demographic. I may have enjoyed it more ten years ago. I don't mind it though, it's definitely different but in a nice way.

I'm glad they got the identity thing out of the way early. We've already been through the early secret identity phase between Clark and Lois.

This show has the most annoying Lois and Jimmy that I’ve ever seen.

Haven't gotten to this yet but I think it's for the best not to spend too much time with her in the dark. Considering she's the character both Superman and Clark interact with the most it's just a hard sell to make her unaware and somehow also a competent reporter.

I can kinda take it or leave it with Jimmy knowing depending on how close he and Clark are in that particular adaptation - in this series they're basically best friends so yeah, makes sense, but in a certain like Smallville where they were never really that close it was fine that he never found out Clark's secret.

But yeah as far as Lois goes I've always preferred the approach of her finding out sooner rather than later. She's meant to be one of the best journalists alive so whenever they prolong her not figuring it out yet it just comes across as dumb; like, as much as I love the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies having Lois forget that Clark is Superman at the end of the second movie was a terrible decision. It's actually one of the few ways I feel like Snyder's version genuinely improved on those movies, by having Lois find out almost immediately and not dragging out the subplot to the point that Lois seems like an idiot.

I think MAWSM struck a really nice middle-ground between the two; you get a little bit of the "Lois doesn't know" stuff for a couple of episodes, but then she finds out the truth pretty quickly without it being dragged out. I'm excited to get to watch this series properly when I figure out where to watch it in the UK.
